00:00:00Hi, everyone. I'm Jenny, founder of Ulta, and so thrilled to be here today.
00:00:09As mentioned, we've been building a consumer AI product in one of the hardest domains to train
00:00:17models in, which is in fashion and shopping. And since our launch, we have organically hit
00:00:23the top of the app store in over a dozen countries worldwide, ranging from US to France to Brazil,
00:00:29Saudi Arabia, and more. And it's been exciting to see everything that's happening. So take
00:00:34a look. One of the most talked about tools right
00:00:38now is a new app. It's called Ulta. Ulta. Ulta. Ulta.
00:00:41Letting you digitize your wardrobe by uploading photos or even receipts, making it easy to mix,
00:00:48match, and plan outfits for any occasion from work to vacation.
00:00:52Every morning, I basically go on my Ulta app, press my avatars, pick my outfit for the day,
00:00:57And this is everything that Ulta has picked for this month. It will generate outfits for you based on your
00:01:03style, the weather, what's in your closet.
00:01:08Fashion lover Jenny Wang had the idea of the app to help her style her own closet.
00:01:13To be able to democratize the technology and experience is really exciting.
00:01:21Amazing! So, thank you.
00:01:26How does Ulta work?
00:01:28Every morning, Ulta generates outfits based on your calendar, the weather, and your personal style.
00:01:34And we learn your tastes agentically over time.
00:01:38Including for prompts like, "What should I wear to ship New York City?" or "What should I pack for a team offsite in Miami?"
00:01:47Ulta uses a half dozen in-house computer vision models to extract and understand your style and closet.
00:01:54And finally, we can generate these outfits on your avatar, which is a mini digital twin of you using diffusion and 3D models.
00:02:04But it's not just app users and viral TikToks that are talking about Ulta.
00:02:10Brands and retailers are also talking about us.
00:02:13And the reason is that today's shopper isn't just asking, "Do I like this?"
00:02:19They're asking, "What do I wear this with?"
00:02:22And also, "Does it look good on me?"
00:02:26And so, our vision on Ulta is that the entire internet can become your dressing room.
00:02:31What does that mean?
00:02:33So, in the near future, you will see retailers have functionalities like the ability to see an item that you want to buy.
00:02:39For example, this sweater from Dior.
00:02:41And then have your Ulta agent style that piece either with your closet or with other pieces from a catalog.
00:02:50And finally, you can generate the full outfit on your avatar.
00:02:54We've established ourselves as best in class in outfit generation and outfit generation.
00:03:00We actually now generate two avatars every second on the app.
00:03:04Users have generated over 250 million outfits as well.
00:03:08And all of this is data that has been piped back into reinforcement learning models that we use to continuously understand what is someone's personal style.
00:03:17And therefore, be able to recommend the best possible shopping recommendations for them.
00:03:22And even though our app is only a year old, we have won everything from Time Best Inventions to Vogue 100 to being featured on Good Morning America earlier this year.
00:03:34And, of course, we built on Vercel, and so some of my favorite features are Edge Network.
00:03:41When you are a shopper in Paris, France, or you're a streetwear collector in Tokyo, Japan, you want the experience to feel fast and snappy.
00:03:50Serverless is really important to us because we go viral on TikTok pretty much every week, and to be able to handle the traffic spikes and not have to worry about maintaining all of our own server infrastructure has been a huge win.
00:04:03And, of course, images.
00:04:05When you think about the fact that our users generate at least one or two avatars every second, we're processing five closet upload images a second.
00:04:13And we also, more recently in the app, we've shipped a new social feed where users are scrolling through millions of avatars, outfits, fashion, and shopping recommendations.
00:04:23And to make sure that all of these images are served at high quality and also is a good experience is really important for us.
00:04:30Of course, my personal favorite feature for Vercel is actually the preview link.
00:04:36So, we're always, as I'm sure every consumer company here, testing many different features, and we often ship these features on different branches, and the ability to then take a preview link and send it, whether it's to one of our non-technical team members,
00:04:52a user or even one of our fashion designer partners, is really amazing without having to ship that feature to production.
00:05:02We are also able to take advantage of a lot of the admin console features on Vercel, whether it's like easy environmental variable management or being able to better understand our logs and performance.
00:05:17And then, lastly, Next.js is just really fun to build on.
00:05:21I remember I first learned Next.js when a friend taught it to me, I think back in 2021 or 2022, and it's just been so fun to build on ever since.
00:05:32So, what I've shared so far is just the beginning of what we've built at Ulta, and it is the connective tissue of consumers and brands that is going to define the future of agentic commerce,
00:05:45and we believe that that's only just getting built.
00:05:49So, let's take a look.
00:06:15So, what you just saw is the Ulta avatar experience that we built for menswear brand Public School, which we launched during New York Fashion Week earlier this year.
00:06:30And so, joining me on stage is Maxwell Osborne, co-founder of Public School.
00:06:41Welcome.
00:06:41Wow.
00:06:42Well, Maxwell, tell us about Public School.
00:06:46You relaunched the brand earlier this year.
00:06:49What's the thesis?
00:06:50Wow.
00:06:50We did relaunch Public School, which was originally started in 2008.
00:06:55We took a hiatus about COVID-ish times, and we just relaunched with a collection called Everything Is Now, bringing everything that we've worked on.
00:07:02My partner's not here with us, but everything that we've worked on from when we stopped to how we've grown to now.
00:07:09When we launched, we knew we had to do something different.
00:07:11We launched an American ready-to-wear designer brand.
00:07:16Something that we needed was this technology that we worked with Ulta.
00:07:19So we launched our Public School New York website with Ulta, and you just saw the demonstration where now, worldwide, people could try on the collection at any time, upload, and send us data so people could just try things on without having a physical space.
00:07:33Even though we do sell wholesale, we don't have a physical store ourselves yet, but Ulta gives us that opportunity.
00:07:40I mean, Public School has had so much success.
00:07:43Wisdom K wore your brand at the Met Gala earlier this year.
00:07:48Jay-Z recently generated his Public School avatar.
00:07:51And something I have always really admired about you and Dow is that you're always willing to take chances on technology and think about what's next.
00:07:58So what is the future that you envision for the intersection of fashion and AI?
00:08:03Really, it's just knowing you can't be last in fashion, right?
00:08:07You always want to be early, but you also want to be right on time.
00:08:10Working with Ulta, doing everything that we're working on, having this piece in this platform on our website, we've seen sales just grow.
00:08:17And I think people, instead of getting returns, they want to try on different shirts, they want to try on different sizes, they're able to do that from their desktop or their phones or the app, which has been remarkable to watch.
00:08:27So I think we've been watching this whole tech piece grow in our space where it's so tactile that everything we work on, you want to touch and feel, but there's like a visual piece that we've now blurred the lines of what is it?
00:08:40It's a real brick and mortar store and e-comm.
00:08:43Yeah, and recently we worked together on a pop-up.
00:08:47Yes, we did.
00:08:48We did a pop-up where we had our sample collection, good point, we had our sample collection, all sized medium for the models because we just came off a runway, but we invited all of our friends and family, about 100 or so people came through, and through Ulta, they were able to try on the collection in their size and pre-order the collection there without actually having to try it on.
00:09:06That's incredible. And, you know, I think what's so interesting is that your new collection, which you debuted on the runway earlier this year, it's something that a lot of fashion brands face, which is you have a collection, you show it on a runway, but a customer can't buy it for the next six months.
00:09:23And so to be able to try it on your avatar, to pre-order, to mix and match with your current closet is a really amazing experience.
00:09:30I mean, the pre-order is still somewhat of a small brand. Having the pre-order feature is just smart. We get to collect on some deposits and then ship them down the line so cash is king.
00:09:44We're able to take some money from our friends and family then and then ship them at a later date.
00:09:49Last question for you is, who is the public school customer?
00:09:55Everybody who's listening right now, but it's actually the worldly man, the guy that is on the go, the guy that travels a lot and who doesn't want to change their outfit from day to evening.
00:10:07Amazing. Well, we do have an example of a public school customer.
00:10:12This rhythm is my new diet.
00:10:26Tastes so good.
00:10:27Now you want to try it.
00:10:29Don't deny it.
00:10:30We soaring so high.
00:10:31The flyest.
00:10:33Ain't no private.
00:10:34Maybe feel it loud like riot.
00:10:36Do your thing.
00:10:37Do your thing.
00:10:38Yeah.
00:10:41Thank you.
00:10:42Thank you.
00:10:43Thank you.
00:10:44You look amazing.
00:10:45Well, Jenny reached out and said, we need a model today with a mustache.
00:10:57It's like, all right.
00:10:58We scrambled and we found myself.
00:11:00So here I am.
00:11:01Incredible.
00:11:02Did you put this outfit together yourself?
00:11:04Well, I got to tell you, I do have a preference for the color black.
00:11:07So public school gets me and Alta allows me to try it.
00:11:11So it was like a match made in heaven.
00:11:13And you made a good point.
00:11:15Like I'm traveling a lot.
00:11:16I have to figure out, okay, what am I going to wear?
00:11:18And I don't always keep up with the latest trends, guys.
00:11:21I'm a bit of a target connoisseur.
00:11:24I love their clothes, but this is such a great upgrade.
00:11:26And to be able to support amazing entrepreneurs like yourselves.
00:11:30That's what Vercel is all about.
00:11:32So.
00:11:33Thank you so much.
00:11:34We're so proud to be building on Vercel.
00:11:36So we're honored that Alta and public school are the leading brands of the world that are
00:11:42innovating, not just with AI and agentic infrastructure, but with fashion and taste.
00:11:48Some of the important values of the future.
00:11:50You know, you can experience their brands by using them, but downloading their products.
00:11:56Try it all the time.
00:11:57Like I did go to public school, NYC.com.
00:12:00And hopefully you'll be trying their clothes as well later today.
00:12:04Yes.
00:12:05Yeah.
00:12:06You can experience the public school and Alta experience on using this QR code or at publicschoolnyyorkc.com.
00:12:12We'll have your phones.
00:12:13Yes.
00:12:14You could be looking like that soon.
00:12:15This is his avatar.
00:12:16We think he looks amazing.
00:12:18And thank you, G and Maxwell, for being such great partners for us.
00:12:23It's so amazing to be building at the intersection of fashion and AI.
00:12:27You can find us on the app store and follow us on Instagram, and we hope to see your avatars.
00:12:31Thank you, Jenny.
00:12:32Thank you, Jenny.
00:12:33Thank you so much.
00:12:35Thank you.
