00:00:0015 years ago, I had a powerful realization that completely changed the trajectory of my career.
00:00:06Your career will never outgrow your communication. And after a decade of speaking and training
00:00:12communication skills to millions of people, I've discovered there are four levels of speaking that
00:00:17you need to move through if you want to grow faster in your career, business or relationships.
00:00:24Level one, unaware. This is where you have no idea what you're doing wrong.
00:00:29You think you're saying the right things, but you're repelling people without even realizing it.
00:00:34Level two, aware. You understand the skills now required to be a great communicator.
00:00:39And now you know what you're doing wrong. Level three, skilled. Here you're practicing.
00:00:45You have the tools, but it takes deliberate focus and intention.
00:00:49You feel like you're performing the skill and it doesn't feel like you're embodying it.
00:00:53Level four, mastery. At this level, communication is second nature to you.
00:00:58You just think about the outcome and your communication skills
00:01:01take you to where you want to go automatically.
00:01:04And understanding which level you're stuck on is crucial because at each and every level,
00:01:08there's one core skill you need to learn in order to be able to advance to the next stage.
00:01:14So let's start with level one. The problem here is you don't know what you don't know,
00:01:19which is why if you want to move to level two of knowing you need education.
00:01:24Just by watching this video, subscribing to my channel and attending one of my communication
00:01:28classes, you'll be learning the fundamental skills that make you great as a communicator.
00:01:33To save you time, let me share exactly what you need to know to be a great communicator.
00:01:38Number one, this is your vocal image. And that's how you use your voice. It's your volume,
00:01:47your rate of speech, your pitch, your tonality, and your use of pauses.
00:01:52If you look at the greatest speakers in the world, they don't get stuck in a default volume,
00:01:56default pitch, default rate of speech. No, no, no. They move from loud to then quiet.
00:02:02They go from slow to then fast. They go from high pitch to then low, filled with authority.
00:02:09You get the point. Great communicators are dynamic with how they speak. Number two, this is visual
00:02:16image. This is how you use your body. And the greatest communicators are hyper aware of
00:02:23what they're communicating non-verbally. Your body language consists of your hand gestures,
00:02:28eye contact, facial expressions, and the way you use movement as you're talking. And number three,
00:02:35verbal image. This is how you use your words. For example, when you communicate, do you use
00:02:42storytelling to help get your points across? Or do you share just raw data, facts, and information?
00:02:48Do you use frameworks when you communicate? Or do you just ramble and share your thinking out loud?
00:02:53Once you understand these three areas, vocal image, visual image, and verbal image,
00:02:58you never look at communication the same way again. I usually spend three full days deep diving into
00:03:04those areas in my communication workshops. So I won't be able to cover them all in detail
00:03:08in this video. But I have created a few free resources and trainings for you, where I've
00:03:12distilled the 80/20 of what you need to know in order to move from level one to level two faster.
00:03:18I'll leave all the links to the free trainings and resources down below in the description.
00:03:22Go check it out. I highly recommend it. Okay, now once you've educated yourself on the
00:03:26different areas of communication, you now know what you don't know. Now you are at level two,
00:03:32the awareness stage. This is where you start to notice things about your voice,
00:03:36your body, and the words that you use throughout your everyday interactions.
00:03:40You catch yourself now rambling using ums and ahs being monotone. And it's painful
00:03:46because you thought you were communicating just fine. But now that you can see the problems,
00:03:51you cannot unsee them. But here's where most people go wrong. Most people will get stuck on level two
00:03:57and never graduate to level three, because they don't have a clear plan to go from where they are
00:04:03to where they want to be. And in order to diagnose where you are right now with your communication,
00:04:09you need to apply a process that I call record and review. I know what you might be thinking. No,
00:04:15I don't want to record myself. It's cringe, Vin. Is this actually necessary, Vin?
00:04:20I want you to think about the greatest athletes in the world. They don't just show up on the
00:04:24global stage and then perform. They will rewatch their games. They will analyze their movements
00:04:29and break down the mechanics. They study the heck out of it so that they can identify their
00:04:34weaknesses, their blind spots. And that's why they're world-class. So if you want to become
00:04:39a world-class communicator, it starts with you applying the record and review process.
00:04:44Here's how it works. To begin the process, go to ChatGBT and type in this exact prompt. I'll
00:04:49leave it for you in the description below. This gives you a list of questions that you need to
00:04:52answer on the spot while you're filming yourself. No preparation here. Now that you've got the list
00:04:57of questions, the first step is to record a 10-minute video. Get your phone and go to the
00:05:03camera app, sit your phone upright on a desk or on a tripod if you've got one, and make sure you're
00:05:07standing for this. Now, I want you to hit record and start answering the questions out loud. You
00:05:12want to be speaking for at least 10 minutes. And by doing this, it teases out all of your
00:05:18non-functional communication behaviors that's related to vocal, visual, and verbal image.
00:05:24You can now see yourself the way other people see you when you communicate. Once you're done,
00:05:29this next step is very important. Leave the video for 24 hours. This is such a critical part of the
00:05:36process because it takes you out of judgment mode and into observer mode. If you watch the video
00:05:42straight away, you'll be hypercritical. Leaving it for 24 hours, you're better looking and you sound
00:05:47better too. Trust me. Now, once the 24-hour passes, you're going to review it in three different ways.
00:05:53Number one, vocal review. Number two, visual review. Number three, verbal review. So first,
00:06:02to do the vocal review, I want you to turn up the volume and turn the video face down
00:06:08so you can really hear yourself. Start taking notes on your vocal image. Am I speaking too fast? Am I
00:06:14pausing enough? Am I too quiet? What's distracting about my voice? Start to take notes as you isolate
00:06:21the vocal image. Second, now we're doing the visual review. Turn down the volume, turn the video face
00:06:29up so you can only see yourself but you can't hear anything. Take notes on your visual image. Do I
00:06:33sway my body around while I'm talking? Do I vary my facial expressions or am I stuck in what they call
00:06:39an RBF? You can google that later what that means, resting blank face. Am I darting my eyes? What's
00:06:46distracting about my body language? What are the non-functional behaviors here that I see? Start
00:06:52taking notes. And finally, the verbal review. Here, get your video transcribed so you can see exactly
00:06:59what words you used and then start to highlight the words you use all the time that add no value
00:07:04and sometimes distract people from the answers and the clarity of your message. Am I using too many
00:07:09filler words? So like, do you know what I mean? Do I have too many non-words? Am I talking in circles?
00:07:16Now you can see your communication from a completely different perspective. Once you complete this
00:07:22process just once you've now created a customized list of communication behaviors that are specific
00:07:29for you to improve and this is critical because if you don't do this step you're just applying generic
00:07:35advice and random tips hoping it will improve your communication skills. That's basically like you
00:07:41reading the top 10 books on Amazon hoping it's going to make you a better person. Sure, they might be
00:07:46useful in general but they're not tailored to solve the specific problems you're dealing with in this
00:07:52chapter of life. Applying general advice tends to lead to general outcomes and general results.
00:07:59Applying specific advice leads to exponential results. Okay, you've moved on to level three.
00:08:06Only three percent of people are here so give yourself a pat on the back mate you're doing
00:08:10bloody great. This is the stage of conscious competence. You know what you need to work on
00:08:16but it still takes deliberate focus and attention to create the outcomes you desire. So for example,
00:08:21you're in a meeting and you're mentally checking off the list. Okay, am I speaking clearly? Am I
00:08:26making good eye contact? Did I pause after the important point? Did I use the right body language?
00:08:31So at this stage it still takes concentration but you're doing it you're doing it. Now here's the
00:08:37biggest trap that stops people from moving to level four. As you practice these new behaviors you might
00:08:42feel like you're performing or you're acting you'll think to yourself gosh I feel so fake. Stop oh I'm
00:08:48going to stop you right there. I want to reframe this for you it's not fake it's not phony and I'm
00:08:52going to tell you why. You see back when I was in my early 20s when I started working on my
00:08:56communication skills I took up singing classes. I really wanted to unlock the the potential of my
00:09:01voice and at the first lesson that I ever had meeting my singing teacher the first thing she
00:09:05does in the piano room is she just plays one key on the piano over and over and over again and I
00:09:11remember sitting there feeling like oh my god what's happening right now she's been doing this for the
00:09:15last two minutes. Is she crazy? And then she stops all of a sudden she pauses she turns around and she
00:09:21says how do you feel young man? I remember saying to her um I don't feel anything I feel a little
00:09:27bit scared to be honest. And then she turns around and she says good. I was thinking to myself what
00:09:32the hell is going on? And then she turns around and she goes listen and then she plays this beautiful
00:09:38song. It goes for about two to three minutes and then at the end of that she turns around she goes
00:09:41how do you feel young man? I said to her listen to be honest I'm quite scared still from that
00:09:46beginning thing of you doing the one key but now I actually feel a little bit sad. It felt like
00:09:51it was a song about love about about lust and then she goes good. And then she says the most beautiful
00:09:58thing Vin. Most people go through their whole lives using their voice like this. Your voice is
00:10:03an instrument Vin. I'm going to teach you how to play it like this. This was the greatest sound
00:10:08speech I've ever heard. I said that's it I mean I don't care how much it cost I'll give you all
00:10:12my money. And here's why I'm telling you this story. As you practice these new communication behaviors
00:10:18you're learning to play new keys on your instrument on your piano. But here's what you need to
00:10:24understand. These are your keys. It's your instrument. It can't be fake. It can't be phony. It's your
00:10:31instrument. They're your keys. The only thing is when you start to play these unfamiliar keys
00:10:37it will just start to feel strange but you have to reframe it in those moments. It's not fake. It's not
00:10:43phony. It's just unfamiliar. And if you make this reframe what happens? It means you explore the
00:10:49whole damn instrument. But if you don't make the reframe you just keep using your voice like this
00:10:54for the rest of your life. So embrace the discomfort and lean into the unfamiliar. Okay so how do you
00:11:00actually move from level three to level four? It's through a process I call the mastery cycle. The
00:11:07first step is try and apply. The second step is review and reflect. And the third step is plan
00:11:15and improve. Starting with trying and applying. Pick just one behavior that you created during
00:11:22your recording review process. Doesn't matter which bucket it comes from. It could come from the vocal,
00:11:27the visual or the verbal. Just pick one and commit to testing it in a real conversation. Trust me
00:11:33most people just go from watching one YouTube video to another YouTube video to another YouTube video
00:11:37and they apply nothing. And then as a result no transformation. Nothing changes in their
00:11:42communication. So apply the things you're learning. Try it. Now for example when I did my recording
00:11:47review let's say I discovered that I speak too fast when I get excited about a certain topic.
00:11:52So then this week I want to focus on simply this. Slow down Vin and add more pauses when presenting
00:11:58to your team. That's it. And then once you've done this the second step is to review and reflect.
00:12:04After an interaction with one of your team members just ask yourself did I work on slowing down?
00:12:11Did I pause more? What worked? What didn't work? And as I'm reflecting I'm thinking through the
00:12:16interaction. Oh you know what I did slow down in moments of excitement. And when I reflect even more
00:12:22I realized that huh something interesting happened when I slowed down. It made me feel more confident
00:12:28not less but I also caught myself rushing again after someone asks me a question. Huh so I need
00:12:34to slow down in those moments too. You see that reflection that I just did? That's all valuable
00:12:40data. And finally the third step plan and improve. Based on your reflection you make one small
00:12:47adjustment then you go back and you try again. So in my case my adjustment I'm going to be keeping
00:12:53a slower pace especially when people ask me a question. What I'm going to do is once they ask
00:12:58me a question I'm going to pause take a deep breath and that pause and the deep breath is going to slow
00:13:06down my rate of speech. So I'm going to test this again in my next conversation. That's my plan to
00:13:11improve. Okay this is subtle but I hope you didn't miss it because what I'm doing here is I'm going
00:13:16through the mastery cycle again and this is what makes the mastery cycle a cycle. You're not just
00:13:23applying what you learned once you're refining it with every single cycle of the mastery cycle. Every
00:13:31time you go through it you get sharper more natural more effective and here's the magic the more cycles
00:13:37you complete the faster you'll reach level four. Level four is where everything changes. This is
00:13:46unconscious competence or what I like to call mastery. This is where you've done so many reps
00:13:52of your communication that it becomes second nature. You walk into any room any conversation
00:13:58any presentation and you simply focus on the outcome that you desire the outcome that you want
00:14:02and your skills and abilities take you there automatically without you even thinking about it.
00:14:08At level four people stop and they listen when you speak. Your ideas land and you finally get the yes
00:14:14that you've always wanted. Your communication finally matches your capability so people can
00:14:19actually see what you're worth. Don't be like most people and get stuck at level one or level two.
00:14:25You now have the roadmap to become a world-class communicator. So here's my challenge for you pick
00:14:31one behavior from your recording review this week and go through a cycle of it just one because when
00:14:38your communication transforms everything else follows. This is the tide that lifts all boats.
00:14:45If you're still not convinced and you want to see how powerful this recording review process is
00:14:50click this video up here watch me go through it live with one of our students from our stage programs.
00:14:56you'll be shocked at how much they transform within just minutes.

Key Takeaway

To achieve world-class communication mastery, one must move from unconscious incompetence to unconscious competence by systematically recording, reviewing, and refining specific vocal, visual, and verbal behaviors through a continuous improvement cycle.

Highlights

Your career and personal growth will never outgrow your level of communication skills.

Communication mastery consists of four distinct stages: Unaware, Aware, Skilled, and Mastery.

The 'Record and Review' process is the essential diagnostic tool for identifying non-functional behaviors.

Effective communication is categorized into three images: Vocal (sound), Visual (body), and Verbal (words).

Advancing to level four requires the 'Mastery Cycle' consisting of try and apply, review and reflect, and plan and improve.

Unfamiliarity with new communication techniques is often mistaken for being 'fake,' but it is actually just exploring new 'keys' on your instrument.

Timeline

The Four Levels of Speaking

The speaker introduces a career-changing realization that professional growth is directly capped by communication ability. He outlines a four-level framework starting with Level 1, where speakers are unaware of their mistakes and unintentionally repel others. Level 2 involves awareness of required skills and recognizing personal faults, while Level 3 focuses on deliberate, effortful practice that feels like a performance. Finally, Level 4 is mastery, where communication becomes a second-nature tool used to achieve outcomes automatically. Understanding which stage you are currently stuck on is the first step toward advancing your influence.

Level 1 to Level 2: The Three Images of Communication

Moving from being unaware to aware requires education on the three core pillars of communication: vocal, visual, and verbal images. The vocal image involves being dynamic with volume, pitch, and pauses rather than staying in a default, monotone mode. Visual image focuses on non-verbal cues like hand gestures, eye contact, and facial expressions that the speaker must consciously manage. Verbal image covers word choice, such as using storytelling and frameworks instead of just sharing raw data or rambling. The speaker emphasizes that once these three areas are understood, you can never look at human interaction the same way again.

The Record and Review Process

To transition from awareness to being skilled, the speaker introduces the 'Record and Review' process, which most people avoid due to the 'cringe' factor. He compares this to elite athletes who study game film to identify mechanical weaknesses and blind spots. The process involves recording a 10-minute impromptu video of yourself answering questions to draw out non-functional communication behaviors. Crucially, the speaker advises waiting 24 hours before watching the footage to shift from a judgmental mindset to an objective observer mode. This delay ensures you are mentally prepared to analyze your performance without being overly hypercritical of your appearance.

Analyzing Your Performance Data

The review phase is divided into three specific isolation exercises to create a customized improvement list. First, the vocal review is done by listening to the audio while the screen is face down to focus solely on speech rate, volume, and distractions. Second, the visual review is conducted with the volume muted to observe body swaying, facial expressions, and 'resting blank face' tendencies. Finally, a verbal review uses a transcript to highlight filler words, non-words, and circular logic that may distract from the message. This personalized data is superior to generic advice because it targets the specific problems the individual is currently facing.

The Trap of Feeling Fake

At Level 3, individuals often feel like they are 'performing' or being phony, which can stop their progress toward mastery. The speaker reframes this through a story about a singing teacher who taught him that his voice is an instrument with many keys. Practicing new behaviors is not being fake; it is simply learning to play unfamiliar keys on your own instrument that you have previously ignored. He encourages learners to lean into the discomfort of the unfamiliar rather than retreating to a limited range of expression. This mindset shift is essential for fully exploring the potential of one's vocal and physical presence.

The Mastery Cycle and Level 4

The final stage involves the 'Mastery Cycle,' which consists of three steps: try and apply, review and reflect, and plan and improve. Instead of trying to fix everything at once, the speaker suggests picking one specific behavior—like adding pauses—and testing it in real-world interactions. Reflecting on these attempts provides valuable data, such as realizing that slowing down actually increases personal confidence. By repeating this cycle, behaviors eventually move from conscious effort to 'unconscious competence,' which is the hallmark of Level 4. In this state, your communication finally matches your true capability, ensuring your ideas land effectively and your worth is recognized by others.
