00:00:00- The only reason, the only reason to win the game
00:00:04is to be free of it.
00:00:05- Sorry, James, I remember my first helicopter deal.
00:00:09- Free shows in three cities in four days.
00:00:12And I'm still working the show out.
00:00:14Then we get to see Chris Hemsworth.
00:00:15- Tour life's hard, mate.
00:00:17Tour life is very hard.
00:00:18- And right then, as you can see, 7.30 was the meet time.
00:00:24We've got an airport to get to, tour to be on.
00:00:26No Dean, no Alex, no Chris.
00:00:28That, just says they don't care.
00:00:31- Stop it.
00:00:36- This is lovely.
00:00:42Adelaide's nice.
00:00:43Adelaide, I'm inside of you.
00:00:46- Adelaide has more restaurants,
00:00:47bread caps than any other Australian city.
00:00:57- I don't know what to do with my hands.
00:00:59I just think we are Newtonic-less today,
00:01:03which is a fantastic use case for the focus pouches.
00:01:05- Arrived in Adelaide with no Newtonic.
00:01:07- Well, what have you done?
00:01:09- Changed, changed a lot, changed a lot tonight.
00:01:11Just wanting to see if this works better.
00:01:13Similar show, different order, new stuff in, all stuff out.
00:01:16Might as well do it in front of a thousand people.
00:01:17Why not? You know, makes total sense.
00:01:19- Well, so every time you do an event,
00:01:21you get a feel for stuff, but you're like,
00:01:22oh, that did better than I thought.
00:01:23Oh, that did worse than I thought.
00:01:25So you're always just course correcting.
00:01:27- There's a principle that is the nucleus
00:01:29to Chris's live show.
00:01:30And it's a principle that will stay
00:01:32with people for a long time.
00:01:33- Is the principle you?
00:01:37- No, no, no.
00:01:37For me, I just come out, soften the crowd up,
00:01:40give people a laugh.
00:01:41- You do soften everybody in the...
00:01:43- Look, people have spent a bit of money to come see Chris.
00:01:46They get their money's worth before he's come out.
00:01:47That's all I'm saying.
00:01:48(laughing)
00:01:51- We got three shows in three cities in four days.
00:01:53We've got travel days in between each of them.
00:01:55Then we get to see Chris Hemsworth.
00:01:56(upbeat music)
00:01:59- So the show's changed again from the first two nights.
00:02:05This is the third night.
00:02:06So from a production standpoint,
00:02:08we just need to make sure that we are
00:02:09in the right place at the right time.
00:02:11What we capture tonight is a different format.
00:02:14So it's like starting again.
00:02:15(upbeat music)
00:02:25(audience applauding)
00:02:29- It's an age old question, right?
00:02:31Like how much am I supposed to burn the candle at both ends
00:02:34versus kind of optimize for longer term?
00:02:36But I do think that you can do both.
00:02:37I think that you can swing, not from like absolute hedonism.
00:02:40Right, you don't need to be James Smith, 2016.
00:02:43But you can do, okay.
00:02:45I'm gonna say yes to more adventures.
00:02:47All of the adventuring and the things that you're going to do,
00:02:49they don't necessarily need to be bad for your health, right?
00:02:51Like you can do things that actually make you feel
00:02:53more regulated and expand your ability to enjoy life.
00:02:56If nothing else, you won't regret the break
00:02:59because it will teach you the very important lesson
00:03:02of what it's like to not always be working.
00:03:04By the way, this is the first time tonight
00:03:06is a completely new show.
00:03:08The same lessons, the same central thesis,
00:03:10but a completely new show
00:03:11to the one I've done for the last two nights.
00:03:13So you guys will get to see something fresh.

00:03:23(crowd chattering)
00:03:26I'm the fucking poster child for self-doubt.
00:03:43I'm just chronically uncertain.
00:03:47Am I doing this right?
00:03:48Is this correct?
00:03:50Do people care?
00:03:51Should I keep going?
00:03:54(crowd chattering)
00:03:57Should people pursue a goal
00:04:00which is probably beyond their reach?
00:04:02I mean, does that aim for the stars
00:04:04and if you miss you'll land on the moon thing?
00:04:07I get the sense that if you constantly try
00:04:11and live in what's called the gap, not the gain,
00:04:14like how far you are from where you want to be
00:04:16as opposed to how far you have come,
00:04:18I don't think that it's the optimal way to motivate yourself.
00:04:21So when it comes to should we set goals
00:04:25that are greater than those that we can achieve,
00:04:28you can do it for a while,
00:04:29eventually you'll run out of gas.
00:04:31You will know, oh shit, this isn't motivating me
00:04:34to go and do the thing anymore.
00:04:36Yes, it's setting my sights unbelievably high,
00:04:39but at least in my experience,

00:04:42at a level where they actually allow themselves
00:04:44to fucking celebrate when it happens,
00:04:47their motivation keeps on going.
00:04:49Right, you can posit an ideal.
00:04:52You compare yourself to the ideal.
00:04:55You find yourself lacking.
00:04:57Then you get to the ideal and you fucking move it again.
00:05:02That is not the way that you motivate yourself.
00:05:05Yes, it's how you get from this lamppost to that lamppost
00:05:07to the next one when you're running a marathon,
00:05:10but if you only had a sports coach
00:05:12that identified when you fucked up,
00:05:15I don't think that you'd be particularly motivated.
00:05:17I don't think that this is the way that goals
00:05:19should work either.
00:05:20So, can you set unrealistic, insanely high goals?
00:05:24Yes, you can.
00:05:25But eventually you're gonna have to feel like you arrive
00:05:29or else you're just permanently going to be living
00:05:30in sort of successful misery?
00:05:34And that doesn't sound very fun,
00:05:36so I'd advise against it.

Key Takeaway

Achieving professional success requires shifting from a model of constant deficit-based self-correction to one that prioritizes sustainable motivation, identity alignment, and the ultimate goal of freedom from the game itself.

Highlights

Winning a game is only valuable if it grants the freedom to stop playing.

Identity lags reality by one to two years, causing people to hold onto outdated perceptions of their own limitations.

Motivational strategies centered on identifying flaws lead to burnout, whereas celebrating achievements sustains momentum.

Setting sights on an ideal to highlight personal failings creates a cycle of successful misery.

Holding a microphone with a relaxed grip improves performance quality and reduces anxiety on stage.

High-performing individuals often fail to integrate their emotions, creating a conflict between competence and self-expression.

Timeline

Tour Dynamics and Show Evolution

  • Touring involves managing rapid travel across cities while continuously refining show formats.
  • Production changes are made in front of thousands of people to test audience response.
  • The central show principle is designed to remain with the audience long after the event ends.

The tour requires performing three shows in three cities within four days, often with flight travel in between. Changes to the show order and content are implemented in real-time based on immediate audience reactions. Success in this context is framed not as an end in itself, but as a mechanism to eventually stop playing the game.

Optimizing Motivation and Goal Setting

  • Focusing on the gap between current state and the goal is an inefficient motivational strategy.
  • Unrealistic, insanely high goals lead to 'successful misery' if they are never perceived as achieved.
  • Motivation remains stable when goals are set at levels that allow for celebration.

Living in 'the gap'—constantly measuring how far one is from an ideal—exhausts motivation. When goals are constantly moved, the performer never feels they have arrived, which leads to chronic dissatisfaction. A more effective approach involves setting milestones that recognize progress and allow for genuine celebration.

Identity Lags and Performance Craft

  • Identity dysmorphia occurs because internal self-perception lags behind external reality by one to two years.
  • Physical cues like mic grip indicate and influence a performer's anxiety levels.
  • Serious topics require levity and self-deprecation to prevent an 'existential hammer blow' to the audience.

Identity formation is slow, similar to how someone who has lost weight continues to see themselves as overweight in a mirror. On stage, gripping a microphone too tightly reflects and reinforces anxiety. To balance heavy content, performers must use 'a spoonful of sugar'—humor and empathy—to ensure the message is received effectively.

Emotional Connection and Men's Struggles

  • Modern society provides little room for men to connect with their emotions.
  • Embracing feelings often feels like a devolution for high-agency, competent individuals.
  • Finding a supportive group of peers is essential for men attempting to integrate their emotions.

Men who are high-achieving often suppress their emotions to remain functional and competent. Reintegrating feelings requires overcoming the 'tall poppy syndrome' reflex, where men mock vulnerability as weakness. Experts recommend starting with small steps, such as breathwork or meditation, and surrounding oneself with a community that can hold space for emotional expression.
