00:00:00with the release of Gemini 3 it's over for developers especially for front-end web developers
00:00:06that's kind of the feeling you can get if you spend any time on X and that's probably not a good idea
00:00:11but that's a different story now here is an actual landing page I tried to wipe code with Gemini and
00:00:19yeah it does look that bad and I'll get back to it I'll show you the prompt anyways even though I
00:00:26only got this horrible result clearly on X you will see plenty of posts that share amazing landing
00:00:35pages visualizations 3d models and anything related to that that was wipe coded with Gemini and it
00:00:42looks like it's doing an amazing job at that even though I got a relatively poor result maybe it's
00:00:48just me though though I thought wipe coding means that you don't need to know anything but
00:00:53again I'll get back to that now Google themselves when they introduced Gemini 3 clearly positioned it
00:01:00as a wipe coding model or a model that excels at wipe coding it's literally the third point in their
00:01:08official announcement post on X the question is why is Gemini 3 really meant to be so good that you
00:01:17don't even need to know how to code anymore is it not a model for real developers but is it really
00:01:23meant to replace us because it's so much better it's a bit more difficult than that now let's take
00:01:30a look at the official announcement blog post on the Google website in that blog post in the very
00:01:37second section we again see the wipe coding part they highlight again that it's amazing at wipe
00:01:44coding and the question is why is that so important to Google why not frame it as a great assistant for
00:01:51developers I mean Google has all these AI tools they dropped a brand new AI first editor anti-gravity
00:01:59why are they positioning Gemini 3 as a wipe coding model and is it really that good is it going to
00:02:06take our jobs well for Google it makes a lot of sense because let's keep in mind how does Google
00:02:13earn money with ads where are those ads primarily in their search and on YouTube but let's stick to
00:02:20the search for now now of course search is changing it's more and more about talking to an AI still of
00:02:30course especially in Google you will see results because they still need to sell you ads but it is
00:02:37changing and Google has a clear vision of how it should change in the near term at least with
00:02:44Gemini 3 they built their first model that's heavily optimized to work well in search which is why it's
00:02:52rolling out in search for the US on day one and there is one key feature Gemini 3 has generative
00:03:02UI they highlight it in their official announcement blog posts and the idea is that Gemini 3 cannot
00:03:08just generate text to answer questions but also user interfaces visualizations interactive 3d models
00:03:17whatever makes sense for a given search query so they want to take search beyond pure text
00:03:24generation they want to have a richer user experience and the key to that is an AI model
00:03:32that's good at producing those interactive visualizations and user interfaces and that is
00:03:40exactly what wipe coding is all about it's about producing something some results some user interface
00:03:46that looks good and works well it does need to be a complex website you don't have to worry about
00:03:52niche cases about security performance all of that does not matter if your only goal is to build an
00:03:59interactive 3d model and of course for many use cases that will be enough this is by the way not
00:04:06something that replaces front-end developers that's simply something that wasn't really possible before
00:04:13having this kind of on-the-fly created user interface or interactive visualization for a
00:04:19specific user query so that is clearly their vision google's vision for the future of search and
00:04:27therefore for the future the near-term future at least of their AI models of course though since
00:04:34Gemini 3 is a frontier model it also is good at coding in general or it should be at least
00:04:42again on x you'll see some mixed results as mentioned google pushes the vibe coding narrative
00:04:49and you see plenty of posts related to that but you'll also see posts that kind of push back that
00:04:57highlight poor code quality that are mentioning that they're underwhelmed by Gemini 3 or that
00:05:06it's not that good at following complex instructions that it's fast and efficient and good for wipe
00:05:11coding but not necessarily good for more complex interactions more complex tasks and that's been
00:05:18kind of my experience as well yesterday i shared a post that i wasn't really convinced by Gemini 3
00:05:26because i had serious problems with getting it to follow the tasks i wanted it to follow it did it
00:05:34often but not all of the time it took unnecessarily complex steps at certain times it insisted on code
00:05:43that clearly didn't work to give you an example in a tan stack start app i'm currently working on
00:05:49it continued to use validator here to validate input to a server function
00:05:56when the correct method is input validator might sound tiny and niche but keep in mind using
00:06:03validator generates an actual error an error you can catch and and see as an output also as a model
00:06:10if you run some type checks and even though i fixed this manually it kept on reintroducing validator
00:06:18and changing this back to validator it were problems like these which i had now funnily enough i also
00:06:26was not successful at wipe coding i tried to get it to build a landing page for a made-up professional
00:06:34cleaning service and well if you're watching the video this is what it looks like is that
00:06:41good i'm not sure uh yeah it's not using purple at least but only because i clearly told it which
00:06:50colors to use now the input prompt i used was create a landing page for a professional cleaning
00:06:56service i want aqua turquoise colors and a page that highlights the high degree of professionalism
00:07:01by our service assume meaningful dummy data for hero section text pricing and perks a pretty short
00:07:07prompt but again isn't the whole idea of wipe coding to go with the flow and let it do its thing
00:07:14sure i could have been more precise i could have created the project and set up some basic styles
00:07:20some basic components and then use ai but the idea behind wipe coding is a different one if i'm not
00:07:26mistaken and then it went on took very long to be honest and well i did not do anything else i did
00:07:33not change the code obviously this is what i got so even with wipe coding i wasn't successful maybe
00:07:39just bad luck because clearly it does seem to be quite good at that but then again maybe it's
00:07:45also particularly good at generating those interactive 3d models and visualizations because
00:07:52again that clearly seems to be the focus of this model and therefore long story short just with all
00:08:00the other ai models we had before and very likely all the ai models that are about to come they can
00:08:06be good assistants as a developer i'm using them you know that i'm using gemini 3 maybe i'll switch
00:08:12back to claud sonnet i'll see but i'm using it and it was okay it's good just like all the models are
00:08:21they can help you with generating code with writing code they all have their problems let's be honest
00:08:28but they're not here to take your or my job not right now probably not in the near future
00:08:37of course a different problem is if executives managers see all the promotional materials if they
00:08:44see all the vibe coded visualizations and landing pages and 3d models of which there are a lot if
00:08:53you take a closer look again we now know why that's the case if you just see that you could be inclined
00:08:59to think we don't need a new fronted developer the existing one can do the job of three people with
00:09:05help of gemini 3 in this case and that of course again leads to fewer jobs right now at least
00:09:12potentially again i'm convinced this is not the mid or long-term future necessarily i'm convinced
00:09:20that ai can act as an accelerator but that doesn't help us today if companies decide
00:09:27that they can use ai to get the same work done with less people that may not be true they will learn
00:09:35over time but still it's a problem today and unfortunately there is no easy solution to that
00:09:41but to answer the question if it will take our jobs no i don't think so it's important to understand
00:09:47that gemini 3 is definitely purpose-built and fine-tuned for a specific task and it's
00:09:53pretty good at that task but that's not the task you're being paid for

Key Takeaway

Gemini 3 is optimized for generating interactive search visualizations rather than replacing professional developers, though misunderstanding its purpose could lead to short-term hiring challenges.

Highlights

Google positions Gemini 3 as a vibe-coding model primarily to enhance search results with generative UI capabilities, not to replace developers

Gemini 3 is optimized for creating interactive visualizations and 3D models for search queries, which is different from professional development work

The model shows mixed results in complex coding tasks, with issues like not following instructions consistently and reintroducing errors

Vibe coding success stories on social media may not reflect the complexity of real-world development requiring security, performance, and edge case handling

While AI models can assist developers, they're not ready to replace professional developers in the near or mid-term future

The real risk is executives misunderstanding AI capabilities and reducing development teams based on promotional materials

Gemini 3 is purpose-built for specific tasks like generating search visualizations, not for the comprehensive work developers are paid to do

Timeline

Initial Concerns About AI Replacing Developers

The video opens addressing fears that Gemini 3's release means the end for developers, especially front-end developers, based on social media sentiment. The creator shares their own disappointing attempt at vibe coding a landing page with Gemini 3, which produced poor results. However, they note that many posts on X (Twitter) showcase impressive landing pages, visualizations, and 3D models created with Gemini 3. Google officially positions Gemini 3 as excelling at vibe coding, making it the third point in their announcement post, which raises questions about whether it's truly meant to replace developers or if there's a different strategic purpose behind this positioning.

Google's Strategic Motivation: Ads and Search

The video examines Google's official announcement blog post, which again emphasizes vibe coding capabilities in the second section. The creator questions why Google frames Gemini 3 as a vibe coding model rather than a developer assistant, especially given their other AI tools like the Anti-Gravity editor. The answer lies in Google's business model: they earn money primarily through ads in search and YouTube. Understanding this revenue model is crucial to understanding why Gemini 3 is positioned this way. Search is evolving toward AI-driven interactions, but Google still needs to display results to sell ads, and they have a clear near-term vision for how search should change with Gemini 3.

Generative UI: The Real Purpose of Gemini 3

Gemini 3 is Google's first model heavily optimized for search, rolling out in US search on day one. Its key feature is generative UI - the ability to generate not just text but also user interfaces, visualizations, and interactive 3D models in response to search queries. Google wants to move beyond pure text generation to create richer user experiences in search results. This requires an AI model skilled at producing interactive visualizations and user interfaces, which is exactly what vibe coding enables. The creator emphasizes that this doesn't require the complexity of professional web development - no need to worry about edge cases, security, performance, or complex architecture. For many use cases, these on-the-fly created interfaces are sufficient and represent something that wasn't really possible before, rather than replacing existing front-end developer roles.

Mixed Results in Real-World Coding Tasks

While Gemini 3 is a frontier model that should be good at coding generally, results on social media are mixed. Some posts showcase impressive vibe coding results, while others highlight poor code quality and underwhelming performance. Users report issues with following complex instructions, noting it's fast and efficient for vibe coding but struggles with more complex interactions. The creator shares their own experience of not being fully convinced by Gemini 3, encountering problems with task adherence and unnecessarily complex steps. A specific example involves a Tanstack Start app where Gemini 3 repeatedly used 'validator' instead of the correct 'input' method, generating actual errors that could be caught during type checks, and kept reintroducing this error even after manual corrections.

Personal Vibe Coding Failure and Analysis

The creator shares their unsuccessful attempt at vibe coding a landing page for a professional cleaning service using a relatively short prompt specifying aqua turquoise colors, professionalism, and dummy data for hero section, pricing, and perks. The result was visually poor and not using the requested purple color scheme (only avoiding purple because colors were explicitly specified). The creator questions whether the prompt should have been more detailed, acknowledging they could have set up basic styles and components first, but argues that true vibe coding should work with minimal input. The process took very long to complete, and the final result was unsatisfactory. However, the creator acknowledges this might be bad luck since Gemini 3 does seem particularly good at generating interactive 3D models and visualizations - which aligns with its focus and purpose as designed by Google.

AI as Assistant, Not Replacement

The creator concludes that Gemini 3, like all previous AI models and likely future ones, can serve as good assistants for developers. They personally use AI tools (currently trying Gemini 3, considering switching back to Claude Sonnet) and find them helpful for generating and writing code, though all models have problems. The key point: these models are not here to take developer jobs, not now and probably not in the near future. However, a real concern exists if executives and managers see only the promotional materials showcasing vibe-coded visualizations, landing pages, and 3D models without understanding the limitations. Decision-makers might conclude they don't need new front-end developers or that existing ones can do three times the work with AI assistance, leading to fewer jobs in the short term.

Long-term Perspective and Conclusion

The creator acknowledges that companies deciding they can use AI to achieve the same work with fewer people is a real problem today, even if it may not be true and they will learn over time. Unfortunately, there's no easy solution to this immediate challenge. However, to directly answer whether Gemini 3 will take developer jobs: no, it won't. The crucial understanding is that Gemini 3 is deliberately purpose-built and fine-tuned for a specific task - generating interactive search visualizations and UI elements for Google Search. While it's pretty good at that specific task, it's not the comprehensive, complex work that professional developers are actually being paid to do, which involves security, performance, edge cases, and maintainable architecture that AI cannot yet handle reliably.
