00:00:00So we have, basically, the most sexually permissive culture in history
00:00:04that is also having the least amount of sex.
00:00:06Yeah, which is wild.
00:00:08It's crazy when you think about, like, I was thinking about social media
00:00:12and even something as subtle as that. Like, everyone's on social media.
00:00:15But I do think even that is changing the way that people view potential partners,
00:00:19how they view their own partners.
00:00:21How so?
00:00:22A study that I cited in Sextinction showing that roughly 1 in 10 men
00:00:26actually loses interest in having sex with his own partner
00:00:28after looking at influencers.
00:00:30And that women also feel less sexually desirable after being on social media.
00:00:341 in 10 men lose interest for a brief window of time?
00:00:41They didn't specify.
00:00:43So they're less interested in having real sex with their partner
00:00:48when they've been looking at influencers on the internet.
00:00:52Yeah.
00:00:53So I do remember at uni, this is so fucking bad.
00:00:56That was an English study, too, actually.
00:00:58Good. Well, it was probably the people that I used to employ.
00:01:01It was probably the lads that used to work for me.
00:01:03I do remember there was two guys that were going to go on first dates
00:01:10with these two chicks two nights in a row.
00:01:13On the first one, he turned up, and he ended up going back with her and having sex.
00:01:18But he said she looked nothing like her Instagram. It was gutting.
00:01:22She was so hot on the Instagram, kind of like a catfish type thing.
00:01:25And he had this joke about he wondered if he could have just
00:01:28sellotaped her Instagram to her forehead, so he could have looked at that.
00:01:31And then the next night, the guy went out on one,
00:01:35and she was really lovely and great.
00:01:38And then I don't think they'd slept with each other that night.
00:01:41And he came back and looked at her Instagram and got turned off
00:01:44because she wasn't able to present herself in the marketplace.
00:01:48That's a good thing, no?
00:01:50I said that. That's what I said.
00:01:53I was like, "Dude, you found a barn find. That's a diamond in the rough.
00:01:56You found somebody that's really fantastic,
00:01:59shows up, wonderful in person, that the marketplace
00:02:03where most other people are going to be competing with you for her,
00:02:09she's just not present."
00:02:12I don't know what it was. I didn't do my research.
00:02:16So what is it he didn't like about the fact that,
00:02:18so he can't send people to her profile to look at her?
00:02:21No, I think that it wasn't even as deep as that.
00:02:25Sorry, it was significantly more deep than that.
00:02:27Not that he couldn't show off this girl
00:02:30that could potentially become his girlfriend
00:02:31or whatever to other people on Instagram.
00:02:34I think what I believed it to be was
00:02:38he was so conditioned to judging a woman's attractiveness
00:02:45through her social media profile,
00:02:47and especially given that it's the most extreme version of you.
00:02:50And for men too, the most extreme wealth or whatever,
00:02:56that he got the ick by her having a bad Instagram account.
00:03:03Ickstagram.
00:03:06I don't know.
00:03:09The club promotion industry is a weird and wonderful place,
00:03:12but I'll never forget it.
00:03:13Two nights in a row, one guy saying,
00:03:15"I wish I could have strapped her Instagram to her forehead."
00:03:17And the next night, the guy going,
00:03:18"She was amazing, but I went and looked at her social media profile
00:03:21after we'd been on the date, and it was a turn-off, dude.
00:03:24I got the ick because her Instagram wasn't hot."
00:03:26So he wants a hot Instagram lady who's just as hot in real life?
00:03:30Yes, I think so.
00:03:33Look, these guys were 19.
00:03:35They had no prefrontal cortex.
00:03:36I don't even think that that's that uncommon, though.
00:03:38I think that social media has done something like that
00:03:41more subtly, though, to the general population.
00:03:44You think?
00:03:45Why?
00:03:48Guys are less likely to want to have sex
00:03:49after they looked at influencers,
00:03:51and girls are less likely to feel attractive?
00:03:54Yeah.
00:03:55They feel less attractive.
00:03:56Okay, so it's a comparison game.
00:03:57Yeah.
00:03:58Right.
00:03:59Why?
00:04:00What do you think's going on?
00:04:01What's the mechanism?
00:04:02Well, I wrote a chapter about plastic surgery,
00:04:04and when you look at this trend of, especially really young,
00:04:07in some cases, girls getting procedures done,
00:04:10I do think social media has done something
00:04:12to make them feel that they need to do this to compete
00:04:15and to get a partner or to at least be found attractive,
00:04:18and there has to be something with just like
00:04:20constantly being inundated with these images on social media.
00:04:23They have found in, say, adolescent girls
00:04:25that girls who are less popular
00:04:27are girls who tend to do upward comparisons
00:04:29or tend to compare themselves to, say, more attractive women
00:04:32or more popular girls tend to fall prey to this a little bit more.
00:04:37In an attempt to try and clamber up
00:04:40this felt imbalance of a hierarchy that they're comparing themselves to.
00:04:44Before we continue, I've been drinking AG1
00:04:47every morning for as long as I can remember now
00:04:50because it is the simplest way I've found

00:05:14and increase healthy gut bacteria by 10 times
00:05:17even in people who already eat well.

Key Takeaway

Social media creates a distorted reality that diminishes real-world sexual desire and self-image through constant upward comparison and the commodification of digital identity.

Timeline

The Paradox of Modern Sexual Culture

Dr. Debra Soh and the host discuss the strange contradiction of living in the most sexually permissive era while having the least amount of sex. They attribute this shift to the subtle but powerful influence of social media on how people perceive both their partners and themselves. Dr. Soh cites a specific study from her book, "Sextinction," which notes that 10% of men experience a drop in libido toward their real-life partners after looking at influencers. Meanwhile, women suffer from a decrease in perceived sexual desirability. This section establishes the foundational argument that digital consumption directly impacts physical intimacy.

Case Studies in Digital Attraction and Catfishing

The host shares two contrasting anecdotes from his time working in the club promotion industry involving 19-year-old men on dates. In the first instance, a man felt "gutted" because his date looked nothing like her curated Instagram profile, leading him to wish he could tape her photos to her forehead. In the second case, a man had a wonderful date with a lovely woman but lost all interest after viewing her "bad" Instagram profile later. These stories illustrate the extreme weight young people place on digital presentation over real-world chemistry. This highlights a shift where a person's digital "marketplace" value can override their actual personality or physical presence.

The Rise of 'Ickstagram' and Conditioned Preferences

The discussion delves into the concept of being "conditioned" to judge attractiveness through a digital lens, a phenomenon jokingly referred to as "Ickstagram." The speakers explore why a man would be turned off by a woman who is great in person but lacks a competitive social media profile. They suggest that men have become accustomed to seeing the most extreme, filtered versions of beauty and wealth online. This conditioning creates a psychological barrier where reality feels like a letdown compared to the digital facade. The section emphasizes how social media has subtly rewired the general population's standards for attraction.

Comparison Hierarchies and Plastic Surgery Trends

Dr. Soh explains the psychological mechanisms behind the trend of young girls seeking plastic surgery to stay competitive. She notes that those who are less popular often engage in "upward comparisons," measuring themselves against the most attractive women on their feeds. This constant inundation of idealized images creates a felt imbalance in the social hierarchy that girls feel they must fix through medical procedures. The segment highlights the desperation felt by individuals trying to clamber up a digital ladder that is often based on unrealistic standards. It concludes the core analysis by linking digital consumption to physical body modification and mental health struggles.

Nutritional Partnership and Sponsor Message

The host transitions into a sponsored segment for AG1, emphasizing the importance of simplifying daily nutrition. He details the benefits of the "NextGen" formula, which includes 75 vitamins, minerals, and probiotics backed by four clinical trials. The advertisement mentions improvements in gut health and nutrient levels even for those who already maintain a healthy diet. This section concludes with a promotional offer for subscribers, including travel packs and vitamin supplements. Finally, the host encourages viewers to check out the full episode for a more in-depth discussion on the topics raised.
