00:00:09This is the most expensive thing I've ever bought.
00:00:12It's the most complex project I've ever built.
00:00:14We did it. Studio's finished.
00:00:15It was arduous.
00:00:17Every little touch means something.
00:00:19We spent so long.
00:00:21F*** me.
00:00:22Okay, where do I start?
00:00:24So this is the first day in what will become
00:00:29from a modern Western studio.
00:00:31I'm excited.
00:00:32I am excited.
00:00:33Slightly daunted.
00:00:34We moved in.
00:00:35We found out that the building had a ton of mould.
00:00:37So we needed to remediate all of that.
00:00:38But it's part of an HOA.
00:00:39Which means that you can't make changes without getting their approval.
00:00:42And some of the mould was inside and outside.
00:00:44Which means you need to reclad the outside differently.
00:00:46Everything needs to be done sequentially.
00:00:48Because you can't do the build until the mould's done.
00:00:50And the mould can't be done until the remediation's finished.
00:00:52And then the particulate clean needs to come after that.
00:00:54And the bathroom needs to be done at this time.
00:00:58I feel like this is the real winning in the weeds.
00:01:01Yeah.
00:01:02Of what we're trying to get into.
00:01:03And getting that wrong is going to be like,
00:01:05Oh, we committed so much time.
00:01:07Yeah.
00:01:08We're talking about the specifics of the office and the studio.
00:01:10I keep changing my mind.
00:01:12Any kind of pendant lighting that we want.
00:01:15But if we don't want to go that route, then yeah.
00:01:18I'm pretty good at moving quickly.
00:01:20But I can be quite undecisive.
00:01:23This is essentially any build.
00:01:24It's just a huge list of decisions that need to be made.
00:01:27It's not just what do I want it to look like.
00:01:29It's can I make that happen.
00:01:31Without any doubt, this is the most complex and elevated studio we've put together for any of our clients.
00:01:37Even Rogan, it's just nothing was skimped on in terms of quality, budget, equipment, constructions.
00:01:44It is so difficult to put any kind of building project together on a good timeline.
00:01:50But when you're also trying to build a studio and there's electronics and lighting setups and five different companies providing your lenses and your cameras and the storage that goes online.
00:02:01And that needs to speak to the system that actually records locally.
00:02:04And that needs to be uploaded to the cloud.
00:02:06It is just an unrelenting stream of challenge after challenge after challenge.
00:02:13And each time that we think we've got to a stage where we can begin to move on to the next thing, there is a holder.
00:02:20And this is, I guess, the same whenever you're trying to do any big project, especially something that requires people with hammers and nails and paint.
00:02:30And then you add cameras and microphones in on top and it just gets exponentially more difficult.
00:02:36So, I'm learning the art of patience one studio build day at a time.

00:02:52I bought this 10 months ago.
00:02:54It's still not entirely finished.
00:02:56It's nearly, nearly, nearly, nearly, nearly done.
00:02:58But you've been watching me record episodes out of here for a long time.
00:03:01So, now it's the time for me to show you around.
00:03:07The most impressive part.
00:03:08The most impressive part is the doormat.
00:03:10So, this is the studio and the office.
00:03:12I bought this in October and this was a marketing office.
00:03:15None of these pillars existed.
00:03:16This middle section didn't exist.
00:03:18Obviously, no podcast studio.
00:03:19We made fake walls, fake ceilings, painted everything.
00:03:23I wanted to make a green room.
00:03:24Green room adjacent.
00:03:25Sometimes guests bring family, friends, managers, and they can come here and sit.
00:03:30And watch this sexy cool vestiboard thing that we've got in the office that everybody sees.
00:03:35Including the guests when they walk in.

00:03:41What's been cool is I've been so involved in everything.

00:06:12We did microparticulate clean before we came in.
00:06:15Jasper purifiers in every room.
00:06:17But importantly, we wanted the furniture that we use to all have no VOCs, no blow-off.
00:06:23Just the highest quality that we could.
00:06:25And this is all human scale.
00:06:26So human scale make the best office furniture on the planet.
00:06:31It absolutely fucking rules.
00:06:33I've fallen in love with vertical bookcases.
00:06:35I had one in my first ever studio back in Newcastle.
00:06:39Go back and watch the David Allen episode.
00:06:41I remember seeing him going, "That looks so sick."
00:06:44So I've had one of these everywhere that I go.

00:07:00I did everything in my bedroom on my own for basically forever.
00:07:04So to have a place to go to work that isn't a coffee shop is still kind of deranging.
00:07:09I come in and there's people here and they say, "Hey, this thing happened."
00:07:13Whatever.
00:07:14As opposed to it just being a Facebook messenger chat between me and Video Guy Dean.
00:07:18So we get a lot of questions about what the setup is for the podcast.
00:07:22It's been the most basic setup in history, which is this guy.
00:07:26When people ask what's modern wisdom about?
00:07:28Well, it's interesting because there's porn stars, but there's philosophers, there's psychologists.
00:07:32And then sometimes there's people that are trying to maximize our ability to do space flight.
00:07:36And then there's like this whole other area of health and fitness.
00:07:40And then I've got these two mates from the UK and we kind of talk about how to make the best toasted sandwich.
00:07:45So yeah, kind of that.
00:07:47It has been kind of insane to go for as long as I have and did just doing it out of bedrooms and spare rooms.
00:07:54This really has been a very spit and sawdust operation for a long time.
00:07:58Every single bedroom of every single house or Airbnb that I've stayed in for more than a couple of weeks has been turned into a studio.
00:08:04My bedroom in the first house I ever bought was the first 500 episodes of the show before I flew out to America, before I moved to America.
00:08:11I think that grassroots spit and sawdust just make it work with sellotape and cable ties thing maybe held me back for a little while.
00:08:20I think I was like, like, fuck it.
00:08:22I can do it myself.
00:08:23I don't need to have a big space.
00:08:24I can go and have the most beautiful podcast in the world and then record out of my spare bedroom.
00:08:29And both of those things can work at the same time.
00:08:31And that is true, but it's not exactly conducive to being a sane human because some days I don't ever leave the house.
00:08:38I wouldn't ever leave the house and I wouldn't speak to anyone except for the guest.
00:08:41Wake up, go to the gym, listening, prepping, thinking about stuff, come back, still prepping in my dining room, go upstairs, record, finish up, go back downstairs.
00:08:51It's 6pm and I spoke to one other person and they were on the other side of the laptop.
00:08:55So it's nice to have a place to come in to work.
00:08:58This is the co-working space.
00:08:59It's really great.
00:09:00I get to come in and I can, you know, do my prep and sit down and have meetings with people if I need to, or the guests get to come in.
00:09:06It's mostly just all of this, all of this so far is the spiral staircase going up to the Bonnie blue bedroom.
00:09:14It's a little bit of foreplay, catch up, have a bit of a chat.
00:09:19Ooh, do you want a new tonic?
00:09:20She tried to try this protein shake, whatever.
00:09:22And then we get into the main event.

00:10:09We spent so long, dude, putting this together.

00:10:15This table's custom.
00:10:16This table is entirely custom and it's a trapezoid shape.
00:10:19So me and guest one are further apart than guest four and guest three.
00:10:26And what that means is you get a four shot from the wide shot.
00:10:30So you can see all four of us.
00:10:32In here is a bunch of stimulants and disguises.

00:10:46I mean, this is really me trying to bring together everything from a color perspective, from a history perspective.
00:10:53Copper and teal is this kind of cheat.
00:10:55It's a little bit of a cheat trick from Hollywood that opposite ends of a color wheel, but they just look so beautiful.
00:11:00And I kind of fell in love with it a long time ago.
00:11:02So we got this custom tree made in Singapore.
00:11:05So this is completely custom made and shipped from Singapore.
00:11:08I wanted something that had a really interesting shape that we create all of these nice shadows, but would also double up as a shelf shelving.
00:11:15So we could put little practicals and art elements and stuff in.
00:11:18So we've got statues, some books.
00:11:21I love these guys climbing up cricket ball.
00:11:23So I used to play cricket from a lighting perspective.
00:11:26I'm fortunate that, you know, we've built some of the most beautiful sets in the world, I think, for podcasting in the space of a day.
00:11:33The guys were able to come in and dial and dial and dial and refine and play with until they got everything exactly as they wanted.
00:11:40So as you can see, if you look up, there's a lot of Nanlites and some Aperture stuff playing around here.
00:11:47We got a great partnership with Nanlite.
00:11:49Aperture also absolutely fucking rule.
00:11:51We worked so hard.
00:11:52Even looking at this softbox that we've covered with our own muslin cloth, because it changes the way that there's a fall off across people's faces.
00:11:59You can see here as well.
00:12:00So this is just a little fill.
00:12:02It's just a little bounce fill.
00:12:03But we've put a tiny little bit of additional cloth over the top of it, which just creates a little bit more flattering shape on the face.
00:12:09And then all of this are Nanlite tubes to create the colors, to create the fall off.
00:12:14My big flex was I wanted to have one set with multiple looks without it feeling like it was too chaotic and people didn't know what was going on.
00:12:22So the solution that we came up with was to create fake windows.
00:12:25So shock, horror.
00:12:26This isn't a real window.
00:12:28Behind here, parvo tubes, Nanlites, and all of these are controlled by the same system that controls all the rest of the lighting.
00:12:37This window will never be seen.
00:12:39This is the only time you're ever going to see this window, because it's not in any of the shots.
00:12:42It's behind me, behind the cameras.
00:12:44So this was kind of the feature piece.
00:12:46And in this window, we're bouncing tubes off of a white wall through diffusion paper here.
00:12:56And then through hand cracked, hand painted, hand stained glass panes that are individually colored with different colored gels.
00:13:07And then with, you can't even see this, these little tree branches, which were again, custom made.
00:13:15And we can change the color of the fucking tubes.
00:13:17So we can turn it from daytime to nighttime to sunset to spooky house.
00:13:22And all of the foreground lighting changes to match the background lighting so that it feels cohesive.
00:13:28Because if you have a different color background and people's skin looks the same, it doesn't feel like the light is falling out of the windows.
00:13:34And that to me is just the coolest fucking thing.
00:13:38One set, multiple different looks.
00:13:41Kind of insane to take a room, make it completely brand new, plaster the whole thing, and then go through even more work to make it look derelict.
00:13:49All of this, this moss put on by hand, stuck on by hand, all of the cracks in the walls also custom created.
00:13:56And we're using it to hide cabling and perhaps the centerpiece.
00:14:00I didn't order this or ask for it.
00:14:01And I came in one day and it was just up and the team had put it together.
00:14:12And we had a bunch of other ones.
00:14:13There's a topless version, which I gifted him on the pod.
00:14:15And there's another version, I think, where we're in swim shorts.
00:14:18Let's present you with two versions of a very famous photo that's going to be behind you for most of the episodes.

00:15:18This thing that was over the first ever episode that me and Dean worked on together eight and a half years ago has got a little nod here underneath the TV in a new city, in a new country, in a new business essentially.
00:15:29So this is the party trick that you might have seen a couple of times on the show.
00:15:39As I said, all of the lighting in here can change.

00:16:07So the standard one is really good unless somebody is very pale.
00:16:12So again, now all of this is brightened up and this is good because it's pretty neutral.

00:16:21There's not, it's not as dramatic, but there's still a good bit of drama going on because we've got this negative fill.

00:16:27So we, we put this one together for Peter Santanello.
00:16:30Uh, Peter goes into deep rural Appalachian forgotten communities.
00:16:36And, um, this one that fill that was up there has completely been killed.
00:16:40We've got a little bit more green coming through these lights.
00:16:43And what that results in is this really aggressive shadow.
00:16:47So this now remembering cameras are coming in from this side.
00:16:49That's what creates that sort of really interesting shot when you've got the tights.
00:16:54And then we've got this sharp wide as well.
00:16:56I really love this profile shot that we've started using recently.
00:16:59We did it in the Elan de Botton episode in the church in London last year.

00:17:04That side on shot, especially when stuff's this dark, just looks so moody and cool.

00:17:52I spent a long time building the skill set to be able to do this virtual thing well, and I'm not prepared to let that go.
00:17:59I would rather speak to a guest virtually than not at all if I really love them.
00:18:03And I'm also doing more solo stuff.
00:18:05So you will see, you have maybe already seen more down the pipe me essay style reflections, Q and A's, lessons, episodes, etc.
00:18:20The significance of today is that it's our first episode in the new studio.
00:18:23It's like stepping into another world, right?
00:18:25I think overall to be able to have so much use case from the studio, like the capability the studio has.
00:18:31You know, a lot of people don't realize like what goes into the back end of just like simple things.
00:18:36Like I want to be able to capture my desktop.
00:18:38I want to be able to do zoom calls.
00:18:39I want to have nine freaking cameras in one space all go to one place.
00:18:43You know, like, so when you come in here, you know, you kind of wowed by just the finishes.
00:18:48But when you're sitting down, I think what people don't appreciate is how low impact it is with the amount of technology.
00:18:54That's in the space.
00:18:56So you're sitting down, you're in a comfortable place, vulnerable to be able to have these conversations.
00:19:00But everything's out of sight.
00:19:02You know, the lights are all mounted to the ceiling.
00:19:04You know, the system is its own thing.
00:19:06Jared's running it.
00:19:07The producer's there.
00:19:08You can tell who put a lot of time and thought into making sure that, you know, you had a really cool spot to have a two, three hour conversation.
00:19:16This is HQ.
00:19:18This is like home base.
00:19:19This is where like everything is going to be feeding into and out of, whether that's the guests,
00:19:23whether that's the guests, whether that's the content, having this home base in the literal central center of Austin, Texas,
00:19:29having the guests come through.
00:19:31It's like a nice central location to where we'll just be able to get a lot of stuff done.

00:20:23You know, when I look back across the trajectory of the show, it is not one of palatial luxury and fortune or expenditure, really.
00:20:38It's been very shoestring budget-y.
00:20:40And then when we started to make a little bit of money, I just dumped all of it into making beautiful episodes and prayed that we could make it back and ran it back again and ran it back again and slowly lad it up.
00:20:51And then, yeah, we started to do David Goggins on a soundstage in Vegas with custom-built sets and my assistant at the time with a piece of fucking cardboard wafting smoke through the room because the fans had blow the fog machine around.
00:21:03We didn't know what we were doing.
00:21:04There is nothing that you can do to get me to speedrun that journey.
00:21:07Because it was so cool.
00:21:08I understand that on the way up, you have uncertainty about whether or not you're going to make it.
00:21:13And that means your uncertainty doesn't make it feel glorious in the moment.
00:21:17It makes it feel perilous.
00:21:19But in retrospect, that is all of the coolest shit.
00:21:21Like, this is also very cool, right?
00:21:23I'm not gonna lie.
00:21:24It's fucking awesome.
00:21:25I get to come in here.
