00:00:0010 years ago, I was on a rooftop just like this, trying to learn to meditate, trying
00:00:03to work out what I wanted to do with my life with no idea what direction I wanted to go
00:00:07in.
00:00:08Desperately trying to uncover where my life should lead next.
00:00:11And then 10 years and 1,000 podcast episodes later and I've sold out a super club on Wednesday.
00:00:20Save the most challenging for last.
00:00:22I have conquered New Zealand.
00:00:24What have we done?
00:00:27We're going to New Zealand.
00:00:38The most southerly point in the what?
00:00:40World.
00:00:41No it's not.
00:00:42Around us it is.
00:00:43The most southerly point around us.
00:00:44What's below it?
00:00:45Antarctica.
00:00:46Oh, you mean that sheet of ice?
00:00:47Anyway, going to New Zealand.
00:00:48Never been before.
00:00:49I'm excited.
00:00:50Sad to be leaving Australia, excited to be going into New Zealand, then Bali, then who
00:00:54knows where?
00:00:55Who knows where?
00:00:56I might go on.
00:00:57I might just move to Bali.
00:00:58Fuck it.
00:00:59It's beautiful.
00:01:00We are off to Mordor.
00:01:01I'm going on an adventure!
00:01:02You're going on an adventure?
00:01:03Hello mate.
00:01:04Nice to meet you Kieran.
00:01:05No way.
00:01:06I've been following you for years, mate.
00:01:07I've been following you for years.
00:01:08I've been following you for years.
00:01:09I've been following you for years.
00:01:10I've been following you for years.
00:01:11I've been following you for years.
00:01:12I've been following you for years.
00:01:13I've been following you for years.
00:01:14I've been following you for years.
00:01:15I've been following you for years.
00:01:16I've been following you for years.
00:01:17I've been following you for years.
00:01:18I've been following you for years.
00:01:19I've been following you for years.
00:01:20I've been following you for years, mate.
00:01:26It's just weird to see you on the flash.
00:01:28That's true.
00:01:29I jump scare people on trail walks around New Zealand.
00:01:35Regulate me!
00:01:36Regulate me!
00:01:37Regulate me!
00:01:38You're not chewing the crowd work portion.
00:01:41What if at one point on each show, what if I ask for a local slang word?
00:01:46Isn't that fun?
00:01:47And then you could react to it in real time.
00:01:48What the hell is that?
00:01:49What the hell is that?
00:01:50Fucking what?
00:01:51Fancy a little meditation for 10 minutes here, mate?
00:01:54Dude.
00:01:55Happily.
00:01:56Yep.
00:01:57It's nice here.
00:02:23It's nice here.
00:02:34I don't mean to play into the stereotype.
00:02:36There's a lot of fucking sheep.
00:02:39Why won't you detect my whimsy?
00:02:49Hello?
00:02:53Whimsy.
00:02:54Not detected.
00:02:55Whimsy.
00:02:56Completely undetected.
00:02:57He knows my whimsy.
00:02:58I mean, you've got to feel like a piece of shit to be on this side.
00:03:02The sheep that's on this side of the fence.
00:03:04So close and yet so far.
00:03:08You know what's mad?
00:03:14In two days time, we're going to be flying to Bali to sniff vapes for a week.
00:03:18So I really do need this regulation in order to offset what the next seven days is going
00:03:23to feel like.
00:03:24Day drinking on a plane into sniffing vapes in Bali.
00:03:28First, my nervous system will be recharged by that sheep.
00:03:33All right.
00:03:35Time for the show.
00:03:43Fucking incredible.
00:03:47Just on the other side of the planet playing in front of one of the most beautiful ceilings
00:03:50I've ever seen.
00:03:51One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
00:03:59See this?
00:04:01See that Chris at the end?
00:04:02James?
00:04:03What's it say?
00:04:05My toilet is locked.
00:04:09Hello?
00:04:10Hello?
00:04:11Who's in there?
00:04:14The guy who's headlining the show tonight.
00:04:15This is a power hoo.
00:04:16Got his own.
00:04:17Come with me.
00:04:18See this huge dressing room?
00:04:19Biggest dressing room.
00:04:20Chris on it.
00:04:22He has his own bathroom.
00:04:24Private bathroom.
00:04:25Private toilet.
00:04:26Yet he's chosen to shit in my bathroom.
00:04:28Waits on his meet and greets.
00:04:29As soon as the Q&A starts, I'm going to shit in his dressing room.
00:04:32I won't flush.
00:04:35I feel good, dude.
00:04:36I'm in the rhythm of it, I guess.
00:04:38When you think about bands and probably comedians as well, the first few shows are them finding
00:04:42their groove, finding the rhythm of tour.
00:04:44The only problem is if you're only doing eight dates.
00:04:46You haven't got that long before you were in the middle of it, and now we're in the back
00:04:49half of it.
00:04:50So, yeah, I feel good.
00:04:51Oh.
00:04:52All right.
00:04:53Back in a bit.
00:04:56What's happening, people?
00:04:58Hey.
00:04:59Hi.
00:05:00I just want to know, what's it like coming to these faraway colonies in the other side
00:05:07of the world to speak to you?
00:05:08It's a really lovely question.
00:05:09I started talking to people on the Internet, and now I'm in New Zealand speaking in front
00:05:14of a thousand strangers.
00:05:15It's fucking bizarre.
00:05:16I mean, especially when I come to places like this, they're just so beautiful.
00:05:20Obviously steeped in history and just some bloke from the northeast of the UK that lives
00:05:24in America and is doing this thing now.
00:05:27It's crazy.
00:05:28What's the biggest limiting belief that I've had to break through in business?
00:05:30Business is an interesting one because I started running a business when I was 18.
00:05:34So, the business thing wasn't that big of a deal.
00:05:38What changed when I started to do the podcast was that so much of me is in the pod.
00:05:42If I don't have a good night tonight, it's not even that I had a bad performance.
00:05:45It's that I'm a bad person.
00:05:47The degree of distance between what I do and what I produce is essentially zero.
00:05:55There's a little bit of professional distance, but even if you're a musician, you go out on
00:05:59stage and you don't hit the high notes or you do something, it's like you performed badly.
00:06:04But if I go out and I say something that offends people or that sounds stupid or that's poorly
00:06:09researched, it's like, "Oh, that's almost the middle of you."
00:06:13Bring yourself back around, Christopher.
00:06:29Time to wake up, Christopher.
00:06:34[Music]
00:06:49I'm under the assumption that I'm gonna be the one that's leaving you.
00:06:58[Music]
00:07:04Do you think your younger self that was bullied, would he be proud of you?
00:07:08And what would be the best advice that you could give him?
00:07:12Do I think that my younger self that was bullied would be proud of who I am now and what would
00:07:16be the best advice that I could give him?
00:07:18Opening up gently, thank you.
00:07:22I don't think he would recognize me, to be honest.
00:07:25I barely recognize me and I've been here the whole time.
00:07:28I don't think I ever assumed that I would amount to anything particularly special.
00:07:32I didn't feel very special in school unless being on the outside is the special part.
00:07:38What would I tell me from school that was being bullied?
00:07:42I'd tell him that he's not on the outside.
00:07:44I'd tell him that he doesn't need to fear things, that he's not alone, that he's doing great,
00:07:48that he's trying, that the fact that he is like a chord being played on a piano or there's
00:07:54one note that's out and he's always felt like the note that's out, it's not his fault.
00:08:00And you're in incredibly good company because there's millions and millions and millions
00:08:03of people like that all around the world that are just the one note that's out on the chord
00:08:08that's being played.
00:08:09It doesn't mean that you don't matter.
00:08:12It doesn't mean that people don't care.
00:08:13It just means that you need to work a bit harder to find your tribe and I'd pick him up and
00:08:17give him a hug and tell him that I'm proud of him.
00:08:19[Applause]
00:08:24I want to learn a local swear word.
00:08:27Something that only would exist here, either in this country or ideally something that's
00:08:31just from like the South Island.
00:08:33Have we got one?
00:08:34Can someone give me some different words?
00:08:37Jaffa.
00:08:38Like Jaffa cake.
00:08:43Just another fucking...
00:08:45Aucklander.
00:08:46Aucklander.
00:08:47Oh, brilliant.
00:08:49Yes, let's fucking go, dude.
00:08:54Thank you.
00:08:55Jaffa.
00:08:56Well, so I'm going to Auckland tomorrow, so I know.
00:08:59You could have stitched me up.
00:09:01You could have said it's actually their favorite word.
00:09:03They love being called it.
00:09:05Ladies and gentlemen, I've been Chris Williamson.
00:09:07Thank you so much for coming to see me tonight.
00:09:16Bring it in, family photo.
00:09:18You were amazing tonight.
00:09:19Thank you.
00:09:21Spangly.
00:09:22I should have won that top.
00:09:24There should have been a group discount.
00:09:30How'd that show go?
00:09:31Good, man.
00:09:32Really good.
00:09:33Great response.
00:09:34Show's feeling dialed.
00:09:35This venue is just so absurdly cool.
00:09:37Feels very British.
00:09:39Not to re-colonialize the New Zealanders, but it was great.
00:09:44Just a good fucking show.
00:09:45Good night.
00:09:46But travel day and show day tomorrow, then nine hour flight on Monday.
00:09:50So I'm going to go to bed.
00:09:58Let's have a look.
00:10:00See you.
00:10:01See you.
00:10:11So there's no flights going in and out of Auckland?
00:10:14We might not be able to go to Auckland for the Auckland show this evening.
00:10:19We could still be going to Auckland.
00:10:24This is just the realities of touring when you've got one show one day and then another show the next day in a different city or sometimes a different country.
00:10:32It just makes things a little more interesting.
00:10:34We've cancelled a bunch of the forests. They're not letting flights land or take off in Auckland's mid-day. First case scenario is they cancelled that flight.
00:10:49Oh no, don't get this on camera.
00:11:06Four hours of delays. We made it to Auckland.
00:11:09Going to go straight to the hotel, straight to the venue, then nine hours to Bali tomorrow.
00:11:37Oh, yeah.
00:11:39Today's been a lot of waiting. Flight got delayed by four hours.
00:11:42Got up early, only had four hours. I was delayed for longer than I slept today.
00:11:46So very good.
00:11:48Got in the bus, went home, tried to sleep for half an hour.
00:11:50Couldn't. Had some pizza.
00:11:52Now I'm here.
00:11:53Oh shit, here we go again. Another night out here with all my friends.
00:11:58Oh shit, here we go again. Another night out here with all my friends.
00:12:05I got a text from the crew of my hometown. It said be ready to roll. I'm ready to die so they don't have to ask me. Yeah, 'cause they already know.
00:12:16I turned on the radio, they're playing. The boys are back in town. The boys are back in town.
00:12:21I pay me off, there ain't no way I'm gonna calm down.
00:12:26Could do with a nap. Might have a nap.
00:12:29Oh shit, here we go again. Another night out here with all my friends.
00:12:35Oh shit, here we go again. Another night out here with all my friends.
00:12:41When we walk in the door, everybody's like, "Man, are you looking for trouble?"
00:12:45It's like, oh shit, here we go again. Another night out here with all my friends.
00:12:52[Music]
00:13:13There's been a few break-ins in the area and because of that, I bought a big black baseball bat the other day.
00:13:19And it lives in my bedroom. And I've been laying there at night thinking, tonight could be the night.
00:13:23And I'm getting excited. Imagine, they break into my house, I probably would let them get in.
00:13:30I don't want to scare them off, you see, because if I scare them off, they're gonna come back.
00:13:33So, and again, genuinely, this is a real tactic that I'm working through.
00:13:38If they try breaking in, I'm gonna get into position, I'm gonna try not to get too excited.
00:13:42Like even now, I feel like the hair's going up on the back of my neck.
00:13:46I'm thinking I'm gonna hide in the dark, maybe at the top of the stairs, wait until they're all fully in the house.
00:13:51And they're gonna expect me to go, "Oi, get out! Get out of my house!"
00:13:56But instead, I'm gonna wait for them to get real close and say, "Hello, boys."
00:14:03Imagine hearing that from the top of the stairs, right?
00:14:07Imagine just saying, "I've been waiting a long time for this, boys."
00:14:12Now, to freak them out a little bit more, I'm thinking I could get my cock out.
00:14:17So imagine this, baseball bat in one hand, tiny cock in the other.
00:14:23"I've been waiting a long time for this, boys."
00:14:27But yeah, so educational talk.
00:14:31Talking and getting the cock out. Ladies and gentlemen, Chris Williamson!
00:14:42[applause]
00:14:50I learned the word "Jaffa" yesterday in Christchurch.
00:15:00I would like to give you the opportunity to teach me an Auckland slur of some kind.
00:15:07It can be against people from Christchurch, it can be against anybody.
00:15:10I'm trying to collect local swear words.
00:15:14So is there anything interesting?
00:15:16"Empicado sheep shagger."
00:15:18"Empicado sheep shagger?"
00:15:21"Empicado sheep shagger."
00:15:23Just sheep shagger?
00:15:24"Yeah."
00:15:25Okay.
00:15:26That feels a little bit like a cell phone. Self-own.
00:15:31Are there not lots of sheep here too?
00:15:34"We don't shag sheep up in Auckland."
00:15:37That's exactly what you would say.
00:15:41In life you have to choose your regrets.
00:15:44In life you have to choose your regrets.
00:15:47Regrets are unavoidable because you don't get to run life back and see if the decision that you made was the right one.
00:15:52You're never going to get to see what would have happened if you'd taken that other route.
00:15:55But you might see other people that did.
00:15:57The difference between "I genuinely want that" and "I'm just intrigued to know what it would be like to have it"
00:16:05is actually kind of difficult.
00:16:07Grass is always greener.
00:16:08But given the fact that you don't get to run life back, I think a good heuristic for you,
00:16:12and for anybody as well, is regret minimization.
00:16:15So don't think about what decision you want to make.
00:16:19Think about what regret you couldn't bear living with.
00:16:25And typically that gives us a lot of clarity around big, difficult decisions.
00:16:30Because what do you want is kind of hard and nebulous.
00:16:35It's tough to grasp onto. It's like trying to catch smoke.
00:16:38But what could you not bear living with the regret of?
00:16:41Absolutely amazing. How it was structured, the storytelling through Chris and how he brought in real world examples.
00:16:48Overall just a thoroughly introspective and enjoyable experience.
00:16:51Go into that if you have to and come and see the show.
00:16:54You've just helped me be a bit of panna, bit of main, maybe more of a hard worker.
00:16:59The way that he talks about detaching from the materialistic world
00:17:04and not falling into the trap of escapism is valuable.
00:17:07The work he's doing is amazing.
00:17:09Breaking through deeper issues in society, I think he's an amazing role model to males.
00:17:15Podcasts saved my life, man. Got me through a hard time.
00:17:18And I couldn't feel emotion before I listened to it.
00:17:22Never felt emotion in my life.
00:17:24So it means a lot, man. Thank you.
00:17:27Thank you. I'm glad that you're here, dude.
00:17:29They're new dance moves. Hit it.
00:17:44This one's called Twisting on Noodles.
00:17:50What is it?
00:17:51What the fuck is going on here?
00:17:52Brilliant.
00:17:53Dude, what the hell is going on?
00:17:57Oh, fuck. That was like three. That was like a multiple orgasm yawn.
00:18:06Show seven done. That was awesome. Auckland is fantastic.
00:18:09And now we're leaving New Zealand and we're delayed again.
00:18:12But it's fine because the flight to Bali is only nine hours.
00:18:16So what does it matter if it's another hour or two?
00:18:19It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter about any of it because spirits are high.
00:18:23They're not. My morale is a little bit of a wall.
00:18:27Dude, first gig in fucking Asia. This Asia? We're in Asia, right?
00:18:40Indonesia. Indonesia. Indonesia's a country.
00:18:43Asia. Indonesia in Asia. First gig in Asia.
00:18:48Where's your beer? Grab one now.
00:18:50Right, we've got six. Luke, can you get three more?
00:18:54In time for the bunch.
00:18:56Stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you, stack you.
00:19:06Have a fucking bing bang.
00:19:08Alright, that's pretty fucking cool.
00:19:17I have a lot of ideas.
00:19:18This is one of the better ideas I've had.
00:19:21Do a tour and then tack seven days on the end and only do one show and do it in Bali.
00:19:25As ideas go.
00:19:48There is no amount of stretching you can do that's not going to make this hurt.
00:19:51I mean, we've been on planes and fucking hotels for so long that it needs to see some sunlight and move a little bit.
00:20:17It's hot, but it's mostly that I'm unfit.
00:20:43My main problem is my fitness and my strength and my skill and my speed and my endurance.
00:20:50Those are the main things.
00:20:51It's good.
00:20:53So much fun.
00:20:54So much fun.
00:20:55I've done maybe two sessions of boxing this year, but I just fucking love it so much.
00:21:00It's one of the few things that happens that makes the entire world stop.
00:21:04When they're in the middle of a flow, you're not thinking about anything.
00:21:07You can't think about anything else.
00:21:13So I came out to Bali ten years ago on my own.
00:21:25It was a month-long summer trip and I was trying to learn to meditate.
00:21:29So I bought a book, like a little book, reading these meditation strategies.
00:21:33In fact, let me find out what that hotel is called.
00:21:36The Koa D Surfer Hotel, and I would sit on the rooftop pool, under the little beds.
00:21:43The sun would be rising over the rice paddies.
00:21:45I'd be sat with my little book, trying to meditate, failing.
00:21:50And ten years later, I've just sold out my first event in Asia.
00:21:55The seeds were being sown.
00:21:57It's me trying to tap into, okay, who am I?
00:22:00What do I want to do?
00:22:01Who do I want to be?
00:22:03It's a cheap lot of success, but is it fulfilling me in the way that it's supposed to?
00:22:07Or what's a bigger game that I should be playing?
00:22:09And I'm going to try again.
00:22:10I'm going to go to this place that I didn't really know anybody else that had come out here.
00:22:13I didn't know anyone that was in Bali.
00:22:15Came out completely on my own.
00:22:16Met some Australian friends.
00:22:18Fucking wild.
00:22:19Life's crazy when you work hard at stuff.
00:22:33[Music]
00:22:56I feel like it's 2010 all over again.
00:22:58[Laughter]
00:23:02Let's see the venue from here.
00:23:04Lucky, lucky.
00:23:05Lucky, lucky.
00:23:06Atlas Super Club.
00:23:07See you tonight.
00:23:08Last show of tour.
00:23:10Last show of tour, man.
00:23:11It's only been two weeks of show, but three weeks of tour.
00:23:13And this one feels very foreign.
00:23:15You know, Australia can kind of be a bit like the UK, a little bit like America.
00:23:18Definitely in a different country now.
00:23:20Selling this out feels way bigger than the Apollo in London or Sydney.
00:23:26This one feels way bigger.
00:23:27Why?
00:23:28It's just, I don't know, fucking Asia.
00:23:32Middle of Asia, dude.
00:23:34So far away from home and sick.
00:23:36Ten years ago I was on a rooftop just like this trying to learn to meditate.
00:23:40Trying to work out what I wanted to do with my life with no idea what direction I wanted to go in.
00:23:43Desperately trying to uncover where my life should lead next.
00:23:49And then ten years and a thousand podcast episodes later and I've sold out a super club on a Wednesday.
00:23:59Pretty bizarre.
00:24:00My goal for the next couple of hours is to just relax.
00:24:03Lock in, but relax.
00:24:04So I might just stay here.
00:24:05I might bring my laptop up.
00:24:06Catch a bit of a tan.
00:24:08Might get a mojito.
00:24:10Turn up at the venue and hope that everything's put together.
00:24:12You need to go.
00:24:13You should go now.
00:24:14Bye.
00:24:15You beauty.
00:24:27The nightclub.
00:24:28So they don't do shows at this slant shop.
00:24:32They have a spoken word show in a nightclub where you've got a system, a PA system.
00:24:37Specifically designed and tuned for nightclub music.
00:24:40And then we've got the other issue as well as the availability of certain equipment that's here.
00:24:47And we're also working with people that don't do spoken word very much.
00:24:53So they're not used to the lighting cues.
00:24:56So we're having a little bit of trouble with a language barrier.
00:25:01They do not speak English.
00:25:02We do not speak Bolognese.
00:25:04Trying to figure out the best way of conveying that information.
00:25:08It's a challenge.
00:25:11We've got to pretty much teach them how to work in this environment.
00:25:14We like a challenge.
00:25:15This is about as challenging as we can make it.
00:25:17Save the most challenging for last.
00:25:19We did biggest show first and most challenging show last.
00:25:23It also means that when we're at a point where we have the least amount of energy,
00:25:27we actually have to expend the most amount of energy.
00:25:30We have to use the most brain power.
00:25:32Yeah, this is very much a show where we actually don't know how it's going to pan out completely.
00:25:38This could be really smooth.
00:25:39It could be really clunky.
00:25:40We just don't know.
00:25:41It's been a tiny bit stressful.
00:25:43All of this is happening, all this frustration on Bolognese Chris.
00:25:47I wonder what he's doing.
00:25:53Not every venue has a rife paddy outside the backstage entrance.
00:26:12Just in case I didn't feel like I was in Bali enough.
00:26:15That's some extra Bali for you there.
00:26:17Oh, yes.
00:26:20Cool.
00:26:21Oh, yes.
00:26:22This feels more like home.
00:26:24Finally.
00:26:25Finally, I found a stage that feels a bit more normal.
00:26:27Probably the coolest fucking venue ever.
00:26:29This is fucking madness.
00:26:33What have we done?
00:26:34What have we done?
00:26:36I think let's just take what we're doing with Chris.
00:26:38Get ready.
00:26:39Let's just get in some EDM, a bit of trance, and let's just turn this into a party.
00:26:45You know what I've heard happens after this, June?
00:26:48What's that?
00:26:49Two hours of massage across the street.
00:26:51Yeah.
00:26:52Yeah.
00:26:53Done.
00:26:54Done.
00:26:55Two hours of foot and hand massage across the street.
00:26:56All kinds.
00:26:57Bare feet.
00:26:58Meet and greet.
00:26:59Meet and bare feet.
00:27:00You have been Bali fucking...
00:27:01I've been completely fucking...
00:27:02I've gone native.
00:27:03I've gone feral.
00:27:04Right.
00:27:05You have an issue.
00:27:06In order to do an entrance to get to the DJ booth, it takes about three seconds.
00:27:08To do an entrance to get to the stage, it takes about 20 seconds.
00:27:11I can fucking jump this.
00:27:13You can go...
00:27:15I'll do it.
00:27:16I'll do it.
00:27:17I don't know.
00:27:18I'll do it.
00:27:21I'll do it.
00:27:22I'll do it.
00:27:23I'll do it.
00:27:24I'll do it.
00:27:25I'll do it.
00:27:26I'll do it.
00:27:27I'll do it.
00:27:28I'll do it.
00:27:29I'll do it.
00:27:30I'll do it.
00:27:31I'll do it.
00:27:32I'll do it.
00:27:33I'll do it.
00:27:34I'll do it.
00:27:35I'll do it.
00:27:36I'll do it.
00:27:37I'll do it.
00:27:38I'll do it.
00:27:39I'll do it.
00:27:40I'll do it.
00:27:41I'll do it.
00:27:42I'll do it.
00:27:43I'll do it.
00:27:44I'll do it.
00:27:45I'll do it.
00:27:46You're a fucking idiot.
00:27:47One, two, three, four.
00:27:50I declare a thumb war.
00:27:53Listen, don't forget your roots, all right?
00:27:56Don't they know?
00:27:57Look, look, look.
00:27:59Look how humble I am.
00:28:00Honestly, this is my new life and my old life clashing together in the same time.
00:28:06It really is.
00:28:07If I could be on the front door with a clipboard, I'd love it.
00:28:18Just a little present for you.
00:28:22Oh, mate.
00:28:23If that's the best color as well as the whole dress.
00:28:27Yeah.
00:28:28Let's go.
00:28:29Dude, it's fine.
00:28:30Thank you.
00:28:31Appreciate it.
00:28:32[music]
00:29:02Apparently, I don't have the insurance that Steve Aoki does, so I'm not allowed to jump
00:29:28off there.
00:29:29I have 10 seconds to get around here, to get to here.
00:29:36There we go.
00:29:39This is my first headline Canadian Asian event.
00:29:48I struggle to be truly present if my level of productivity isn't what I want it to be
00:29:53and where I expected it.
00:29:54Oliver Berkman's got a great name for this.
00:29:56He calls it productivity dysmorphia.
00:29:58Every day, I wake up feeling as if I'm already behind.
00:30:02And only if I dominate my entire day flawlessly will I have dragged myself back up to some
00:30:07minimum level of acceptable output so that I can go to bed that day without feeling like
00:30:12a loser.
00:30:14Fucking nods across the...
00:30:16It's like one of those Churchill nodding dogs across the entire room.
00:30:19Game recognizes game, as they say.
00:30:22Tactically, what I would do and what at least has happened to work for me is forcing breaks.
00:30:28We always talk about building up a good work ethic.
00:30:31No one ever talks about building a good rest ethic.
00:30:34And you need a good rest ethic.
00:30:35So treat it like a pursuit, right?
00:30:37You need to treat recovery if you're an athlete with as much attention or maybe even more attention
00:30:42as you do going and doing game tape.
00:30:44So program some trips in, get your boys, go to Thailand, go Bali, do whatever it is that
00:30:50you want to do.
00:30:52But know that that's your challenge, right?
00:30:54You're a drug addict.
00:30:55You're a drug addict, and your drug is productivity.
00:30:58Just, all right, it's going to take time.
00:30:59We're going to get it wrong.
00:31:00We're going to open slack.
00:31:01Ah, you open slack on a Saturday, an Uber, fuck.
00:31:04It's OK.
00:31:06Over time, you'll get better and better and better.
00:31:10Chris has got a really good way of putting thoughts that I've had in my head for years,
00:31:15but very clearly explaining.
00:31:17I'm definitely feeling more motivated.
00:31:19I'm taking away so much.
00:31:20It's going to take me a few days just to process it all.
00:31:23There's a balance to find between productivity and not squandering away the time and making
00:31:28excuses for why you can't go and be the best version of yourself.
00:31:31He came all the way from Hong Kong.
00:31:32Holy shit.
00:31:33What stands out about Chris in general?
00:31:35The depth in his thinking.
00:31:38So it's not necessarily, oh, here's the answer.
00:31:40No, it's like this could be an answer, but there's a thousand variables that can go into
00:31:47this answer, and the context of that answer matters.
00:31:51I just want to say thank you so much for restoring my faith into British men.
00:32:00Do you hear that, British men?
00:32:02I am a one-man band saving you from having bad branding for fucking Romanian women.
00:32:07It was so nice to see him in reality and also to share this experience with other people
00:32:12because I'm always just listening to the podcast on my own and just to share this experience
00:32:17with like-minded people.
00:32:18It was just incredible.
00:32:20Oh, he's got the backup.
00:32:22Nice to meet you.
00:32:23Ours here from China.
00:32:25You've made such a strong impact in my life, and I just wanted to thank you for doing your
00:32:30podcast.
00:32:31It's made more of a profound impact than you would have imagined.
00:32:43This is just the sickest thing.
00:32:45It's the absolute fucking sickest thing.
00:32:47It feels like a full circle moment for me.
00:32:50This is the last show of this run.
00:32:52We've done all of Australia, including cities I didn't even know fucking existed.
00:32:55I've been to the North and South Island of New Zealand, and I've finished it up here within
00:32:59500 meters of the place that I came out on my own when I was lost.
00:33:10And this means an awful lot.
00:33:12I fucking love you all for being here.
00:33:13I love you all for being a part of my audience.
00:33:15It means so much.
00:33:16That's it.
00:33:19We've got nothing else to say.
00:33:20Guys, this is the end of the tour.
00:33:21I fucking love you all.
00:33:22Thank you.
00:33:23Good night.
00:33:24That's it, baby.
00:33:34Fucking done.
00:33:35Australia, New Zealand, Bali.
00:33:36Australia, New Zealand, Bali.
00:33:38Done.
00:33:40Oh shit.
00:33:41Here we go again.
00:33:42Another night out here with all my friends.
00:33:45Oh shit.
00:33:46Here we go again.
00:33:47Another night out here with all my friends.
00:33:51When we walk in the door, everybody's like, man, I ain't looking for trouble.
00:33:56It's like, oh shit.
00:33:58Here we go again.
00:33:59Another night out here with all my friends.
00:34:02Another night out here with all my friends.
00:34:11Another night out here with all my friends.
00:34:14What's up?
00:34:22Well, I don't know, Zeke.
00:34:23How are you?
00:34:25Today's the day that I'm flying home.
00:34:27I have a 30-hour commute ahead of me to get back to Austin.
00:34:31It's a nightmare.
00:34:32But I've just got to enjoy some of Bali since the show.
00:34:36Finally got to chill out.
00:34:37No obligations.
00:34:38No anything.
00:34:39It's been beautiful.
00:34:40I don't have any deep philosophical insights.
00:34:42I think I just really fucking enjoyed my time with my friends.
00:34:45And it was great.
00:34:46And we got to travel around three countries and go to a ton of cities I've never been to before
00:34:51and have a shit ton of experiences.
00:34:53Hanging out with your friends is one of the best things.
00:34:55And being able to do it on a shared mission is even better.
00:34:58And then, all right, you're sleep deprived or tired or somebody's ill or someone's got Bali belly
00:35:03or you've got a sound check in 30 minutes.
00:35:06But it's been great.
00:35:07Everything's been so fantastic.
00:35:08I mean, I think back to the day that I landed and I'm with Jimmy Carr on the beach
00:35:12having just had lunch with Tim Minchin and Jimmy's looking after our kid.
00:35:15Now, that was three weeks ago.
00:35:17Also three weeks without recording a podcast because I did so much work before I came out here.
00:35:21So I'm looking forward to getting back and doing that.
00:35:23That's going to be sick.
00:35:24We've got a new studio.
00:35:25There's so many huge guests coming up and I can't wait to do that.
00:35:28More of the Hang style episodes, which I'm excited for as well.
00:35:32I feel, I wouldn't say revitalized, that might be a little bit too gentle for what's happened.
00:35:39But it's all good.
00:35:41It's been exciting.
00:35:42I've got some adventures in which has been sick.
00:35:44I hope you guys have enjoyed it.
00:35:45It's been mad doing it.
00:35:46And we've got another tour in the UK and Ireland in October.
00:35:50So it won't be long and we'll be back on the road again.
