00:00:36like everything, it's nuanced, it's complicated.
00:00:40The Amish have the Schwartz and Trubers,
00:00:42which are the most conservative.

00:07:43He was doing no video with you.
00:07:46And I laughed.
00:07:47I thought it was great.
00:07:48You thought that it was on you that you hadn't maybe made everyone feel as comfortable as you should have done, but the video was never on the table.
00:07:54It was never there.
00:07:57You see, you look at the Amish and you say that's primitive technology.
00:08:00But you just got completely schmoozed by him.
00:08:03Schmoozed.
00:08:04Yeah.
00:08:04And before the pandemic, I did these videos like right around the beginning of the pandemic.
00:08:10Oh no, in the beginning, it was like, everyone was like, oh, the Amish left behind.
00:08:16They're not keeping up.
00:08:18That would suck to be them.
00:08:19Then the pandemic happens.
00:08:20Everyone's like, I want some of that.
00:08:23They're making their own food, hanging out together in the countryside, not worried about a thing.
00:08:29So the book gets into those stories, just like the videos.
00:08:32What about the intense Jewish communities that you've been to see?
00:08:36Yeah, the Hasidics.
00:08:37And again, they're different sects.
00:08:39You have the Satmars would be the most conservative.
00:08:42And then you have the Lababitch, which I did a Shabbat dinner with.
00:08:46We had to get approval from the rabbis for me to get in there and shoot that video.

00:09:00It's like the most Spartan living.

00:09:19The guy that does the ads for my show, Sky, one of my best friends, had his bachelor party a couple of years ago.

00:09:31He likes Asian food, Asian culture, and that was it for the theme for the weekend.
00:09:40We did Shabbat on the Friday evening.
00:09:44I want everyone to kind of be here in the moment.

00:09:50So I'm like, I've never done this before.
00:09:53I guess it's secular Shabbat, you could call it.
00:09:55It's basically just don't use your fucking phone for Friday evening and we'll eat some food.
00:10:00Food arrives and he got two pounds of crawfish.
00:10:03I'm like, that definitely doesn't fucking work.
00:10:07Also, there's 25 of us and you got two pounds of crawfish.
00:10:11That's like 100 grams of edible food.
00:10:15So immediately I broke Shabbat, got my phone out and ordered pizza for everybody.
00:10:18I don't give a fuck about this thing.
00:10:21But we did that and we did a Jeffersonian dinner where you have a single question and you're sort of circling the room.
00:10:29And I can see the allure of it.
00:10:31I really can.
00:10:32You know, an equivalent of a lot of people are doing a digital Sabbath now on a Sunday where, okay, I'm just no screens for, you know, nine till nine on a Sunday.
00:10:41After coming back from a seven-day silent meditation retreat with no screens, having little doses of that, I think, make complete sense.
00:10:50So you can do, regardless of whether you're religious or not or a part of the culture or not, I think that there's a lot of cultural technology, social technology that you can take and bring into your own life.
00:11:02Before we continue, most people in their 30s are still training hard.
00:11:06Their protein is dialed in.
00:11:07They sleep better than they did in their 20s.
00:11:09Discipline is not the issue, but recovery feels somewhat different.
