00:00:00I'm starting in OnlyFans and I'm selling merch.
00:00:02This has taken way too long and I'm very sorry,
00:00:05but it is so worth it.
00:00:06The designs are unreal.
00:00:07We've upgraded the blanks
00:00:08so they're even better quality than last time.
00:00:10And this bursting heart design
00:00:12with Japanese text in the middle is just so beautiful.
00:00:16Also, your girlfriend's new favorite hoodie.
00:00:18I apologize to anybody who buys this
00:00:20because I get the sense
00:00:21that your girlfriend's just gonna steal it.
00:00:22All of it is available right now at mwmerch.com
00:00:25and it's only available for six days.
00:00:27So get it once it's gone.
00:00:28You won't be able to buy it again.
00:00:29That's it, completely sold out,
00:00:31never to be printed in the future, mwmerch.com.
00:00:34What was your original inspiration?
00:00:36What drove you to do this?
00:00:37I was here in Austin.
00:00:40It's so cool because I lived here early 2000s,
00:00:43worked as a waiter at Fleming Steakhouse
00:00:45and I just had these dreams of traveling the world.
00:00:49Can't wait to see the world one day
00:00:51because I didn't travel growing up.
00:00:52Our family didn't go anywhere.
00:00:53Always wanted to go to Europe
00:00:54and my goal was save $20,000 in two years,
00:00:59go to Europe.
00:01:00Seven months, get a Ducati in Italy,
00:01:03rip that thing through the Alps,
00:01:04send it home, have my life figured out.
00:01:06Bro, that's a fucking dream.
00:01:07That was the dream.
00:01:08That is an absolute dream.
00:01:09But then I went,
00:01:10I did a winter in Switzerland,
00:01:13snowboarding, doing every job imaginable,
00:01:16and then flew.
00:01:17I'm like, what's this place called the Republic of Georgia?
00:01:20I've never heard of that.
00:01:21I took a one-way, Republic of Georgia,
00:01:24landed, all the mafios got off the plane,
00:01:26which was the whole plane.
00:01:28The BMWs were waiting for them,
00:01:30sped off on the tarmac.
00:01:32It was me in the airport.
00:01:33It was so corrupt at that time,
00:01:35had to pay a bribe to get into the airport.
00:01:38Like, had to pay a bribe if I wanted to enter.
00:01:41He's like, $20.
00:01:43I said, what for?
00:01:43He's like, you enter through me, $20.
00:01:46So, when you're young and curious-
00:01:49How old are you?
00:01:49I was 26, 25 then?
00:01:5225, 26?
00:01:53So, when you're young and curious and adventurous,
00:01:57there's nothing better.
00:01:57Dangerous combination.
00:01:58There's nothing better.
00:01:59There's a fucking dangerous combination, dude.
00:02:01So, Georgia was like the gateway drug.
00:02:04That would be like-
00:02:05Where is Georgia?
00:02:05The Republic of Georgia.
00:02:07So, you're south of Russia,
00:02:08Caucasus Mountains,
00:02:11on the Black Sea,
00:02:14Armenia, right below Azerbaijan.
00:02:16Sort of near Turkey.
00:02:18Borders Turkey, actually.
00:02:20Okay.
00:02:20So, like on the east side, let's say.
00:02:23Where Bulgaria is over here
00:02:25on the western side of Turkey, east side.
00:02:26Okay.
00:02:29But that was the gateway.
00:02:31And then you're like,
00:02:32where can I go from here?
00:02:33And you look on a map and you're like,
00:02:36huh, Tajikistan.
00:02:39What's that like?
00:02:41And so, instead of going back in seven months
00:02:43with the Ducati,
00:02:44I scrapped the Ducati idea.
00:02:46I'm like, ah, I can always save money.
00:02:48But I'll never be able to travel like this again.
00:02:51Maybe never.
00:02:52So, I'm going to go all the way around.
00:02:54And it was 50 countries, two years.
00:02:56Ran out of money in Uzbekistan.
00:02:58Great place to run out of money, I imagine.
00:03:00Yeah.
00:03:00I got cash advances on my credit card
00:03:02for like 25% interest.
00:03:05And it was the best debt I ever got in
00:03:07because it was like,
00:03:09here's my moment.
00:03:11And at that age,
00:03:12you sleep anywhere in anything.
00:03:15Were you filming any of this?
00:03:17Were you making it?
00:03:17No.
00:03:17No.
00:03:18So, fuck man, imagine if you'd had the GoPro back then.
00:03:21Holy shit.
00:03:21You know, I'm glad I didn't
00:03:23because I got to see the world
00:03:26without thinking about making content.
00:03:27Because you know what making content is.
00:03:31It's not all fun and games.
00:03:32It's work.
00:03:32You have to get the story.
00:03:34And I was totally free at that time
00:03:36just to let my imagination go wild.
00:03:40So, that's what kicked off the international interest.
00:03:42But back to Austin,
00:03:44I'm working at Fleming Steakhouse
00:03:46dreaming of seeing the world.
00:03:47And it was here.
00:03:48I'm looking down from my hotel.
00:03:49I'm like, that's the place I used to work.
00:03:52It's closed down now.
00:03:53And I'm like, wow.
00:03:54How did that feel?
00:03:57I think Steve Jobs said it best.
00:03:59I'm not going to say it as well as him.
00:04:03But he said, like,
00:04:03you can never see it going forward.
00:04:07Connect the dots of where your life's going.
00:04:09But you can look back and connect the dots.
00:04:11Only makes sense in reverse.
00:04:12Yeah, there we go.
00:04:13Life has to be lived forward
00:04:13but only makes sense in reverse.
00:04:14Right.
00:04:15And so, that was one of these big moments
00:04:16where I'm like, wow.
00:04:17If my younger self at 21
00:04:19serving the porterhouse steak,
00:04:22which I still remember,
00:04:24the tenderness of the flay.
00:04:25No, the favor of the flay.
00:04:27No, the tenderness of the flay.
00:04:31But the flavor of the ribeye.
00:04:33The porterhouse.
00:04:34That's how you sold it.
00:04:35That's what you need.
00:04:36I sold it better.
00:04:37But I can't believe that was still in my brain
00:04:38because our manager was banging on something.
00:04:40Over and over and over and over again.
00:04:41But if I could have seen then
00:04:43waiting tables where I was this morning,
00:04:46well, just a half hour ago,
00:04:48in that hotel
00:04:48and where my life went.
00:04:51Wow.
00:04:52So, it was just curiosity,
00:04:54a dream,
00:04:55a lot of luck,
00:04:56a lot of hard work.
00:04:57What do you think that
00:04:58young version of you would think
00:05:00if you were able to
00:05:02show him where his life went from there?
00:05:05It would be way more
00:05:06than I could have ever imagined.
00:05:09Yeah.
00:05:09Beautiful.
00:05:11Because the world's an amazing place.
00:05:14And living abroad
00:05:15teaches you
00:05:17as you're living abroad.
00:05:20I don't know if you consider
00:05:21this is your home country now.
00:05:24I'm kind of
00:05:25unsure on that,
00:05:26to be honest.
00:05:27I was telling you
00:05:28I did a little bit of
00:05:30self-work
00:05:32before the meditation retreat
00:05:33a few weeks ago.
00:05:34And as a part of that,
00:05:35one of the questions
00:05:35that came up is,
00:05:36where is your home?
00:05:38And I found myself
00:05:39really conflicted
00:05:40when trying to answer it.
00:05:41Right.
00:05:42Because
00:05:42I kind of don't know.
00:05:45I kind of don't know
00:05:46where home is.
00:05:47Here,
00:05:47this is where
00:05:48my business is.
00:05:49And it's a country
00:05:50that I love.
00:05:51And I certainly feel
00:05:52welcome here
00:05:54in a way
00:05:54that I wasn't in the UK.
00:05:55But I'm definitely
00:05:56not fucking American.
00:05:58Right?
00:05:58The second that I open my mouth,
00:06:00I'm evidently not American.
00:06:02I don't have
00:06:02the same cultural landmarks
00:06:04and understandings
00:06:05and historical context
00:06:08that you need
00:06:10to kind of be able to survive.
00:06:11Something that's really interesting,
00:06:12I wonder whether
00:06:13you've noticed this.
00:06:14People who
00:06:15immigrate to
00:06:17other countries
00:06:18that speak
00:06:18the same language
00:06:19that they do natively,
00:06:21their foreignness
00:06:22or the fact
00:06:23that they're an immigrant
00:06:24gets forgotten
00:06:25and then it resurfaces itself
00:06:27in surprising ways.
00:06:28So,
00:06:28if I go to Brazil,
00:06:30even if you're
00:06:32speaking English
00:06:32with someone,
00:06:33their accent
00:06:34is so evidently
00:06:36perverted
00:06:37that you're always
00:06:39reminded of the fact
00:06:39that you're a foreigner.
00:06:40Sure.
00:06:40Always reminded
00:06:41over and over and over again.
00:06:42But you go to a country
00:06:43that speaks
00:06:44your native language
00:06:45and you kind of forget
00:06:46for a little while
00:06:47that you're a foreigner.
00:06:48you're not from there
00:06:49because it's just
00:06:50seamless communication
00:06:51and then
00:06:52you try to use
00:06:54a reference.
00:06:54I try to talk about
00:06:55Jaffa Cakes
00:06:56or Cadbury's
00:06:57Milk Chocolate
00:06:57or the Inbetweeners
00:06:59or fucking,
00:06:59you know,
00:07:00Mr. Bean
00:07:01or whatever.
00:07:02And,
00:07:02which obviously,
00:07:03those are the four horsemen
00:07:04of British culture.
00:07:05And,
00:07:05um,
00:07:06then you go,
00:07:08I can't do that.
00:07:09I can't do that.
00:07:10I forget that I'm a foreigner.
00:07:11You forget that you're a foreigner
00:07:13in a country
00:07:13that speaks your own language.
00:07:14And it's really,
00:07:15it's good
00:07:17because it allows you
00:07:18to integrate very quickly
00:07:19and you don't feel
00:07:20as alienated,
00:07:21I imagine,
00:07:21as you might do
00:07:22if you weren't speaking
00:07:22a language.
00:07:23But then the alienation
00:07:24sort of jump scares you.
00:07:26Yeah.
00:07:26It creeps up on you
00:07:28every so often,
00:07:29hits you,
00:07:29and you weren't really
00:07:30expecting it.
00:07:30And that's something
00:07:31that I've noticed
00:07:31since I've been here
00:07:32that,
00:07:33um,
00:07:34I think if you were
00:07:34in a country
00:07:35that didn't speak
00:07:36your native language,
00:07:37you would be very
00:07:37regularly reminded of that.
00:07:39And you would probably
00:07:39give yourself a,
00:07:40a bit more grace
00:07:42of,
00:07:43hey,
00:07:43if you're feeling
00:07:44a little alienated
00:07:45every so often,
00:07:46that makes sense.
00:07:47Yeah.
00:07:48But then you come here
00:07:49and you're like,
00:07:49well,
00:07:49what are you whining about?
00:07:50Everyone fucking speaks
00:07:51the same language.
00:07:51You've got your O1 visa,
00:07:53you've got the bank accounts,
00:07:54you've got the health insurance.
00:07:55What are you complaining about?
00:07:56And you go,
00:07:57I get that,
00:07:57but you're still culturally displaced.
00:07:59Yeah.
00:07:59You are still socially
00:08:00an alien here.
00:08:02Don't you feel that
00:08:03when you live abroad,
00:08:04you learn more about
00:08:05your home country
00:08:06than being,
00:08:07being at home?
00:08:08Dude,
00:08:09that's a,
00:08:09that's what the world taught me.
00:08:11That's a George Mack line
00:08:12as well.
00:08:12He says the exact same thing.
00:08:14He moved to Dubai,
00:08:15learned more about being,
00:08:16about the UK,
00:08:17being in Dubai
00:08:17than he'd ever learned
00:08:18being in the UK.
00:08:19Yeah.
00:08:20Yeah.
00:08:20So I thought my goal
00:08:21was to show the world
00:08:22that,
00:08:24look,
00:08:24most people have an idea
00:08:25of the UK
00:08:26or France
00:08:27or Italy.
00:08:28When you go,
00:08:29when you get on the ground,
00:08:30things are always
00:08:31more complicated,
00:08:31nuanced and more,
00:08:32more granular.
00:08:33But I wanted to show
00:08:35the Republic of Georgia.
00:08:36I wanted to show Syria,
00:08:38these places that
00:08:39only get negativity
00:08:41in the press.
00:08:41That was the goal.
00:08:42That's how this all started.
00:08:44Show Americans
00:08:45the world they don't know.
00:08:46You know how many Americans
00:08:47went on a single flight
00:08:49last year?
00:08:51Less than half
00:08:53of Americans
00:08:54got on a plane
00:08:55in 2025.
00:08:5645% of Americans
00:08:58got on a plane.
00:08:5855% of Americans
00:08:59didn't.
00:09:00And I think it's
00:09:01some insane number
00:09:02don't even have
00:09:03a passport.
00:09:04I don't know the percentage.
00:09:05So I used to be
00:09:06a little harsher on that.
00:09:08But what I realize
00:09:11in my work now,
00:09:12most people,
00:09:14two weeks of vacation.
00:09:16That's Christmas,
00:09:17that's Thanksgiving,
00:09:18that's family.
00:09:20You've got obligations.
00:09:20Like, realistically,
00:09:22we didn't travel
00:09:24growing up in my family.
00:09:26Going to Europe
00:09:27takes time,
00:09:28takes money.
00:09:31So I get it
00:09:33for a lot of people.
00:09:33Me, personally,
00:09:34or you,
00:09:35you're curious.
00:09:36You want to see
00:09:37what's out there.
00:09:38And I think it's
00:09:39more possible
00:09:42than most people think,
00:09:45especially when you're younger.
00:09:47Like, your choice,
00:09:47my dad was in a profession
00:09:49where you're getting
00:09:50two weeks here,
00:09:51he's not seeing the world.
00:09:53So I'm not going to do
00:09:54that profession
00:09:54if I want to see the world.
00:09:56It's pretty easy.
00:09:56You can sort of line things up
00:09:57and be like,
00:09:58if I go that direction,
00:09:59I'm not going to do
00:10:00what I want to do the most.
00:10:01Okay, don't go that direction.
00:10:04What are some of the
00:10:06lesser known
00:10:07but amazing destinations
00:10:09that you think
00:10:09people should go to
00:10:10if they're looking
00:10:11to travel outside of the US?
00:10:13Like, a surprising,
00:10:14great trip.
00:10:15Are you going to tell me
00:10:16that Syria
00:10:16is like a hotbed
00:10:19for a weekend getaway?
00:10:20Jared, can we go to the,
00:10:23we made a special setting
00:10:24so I know that you sometimes
00:10:25go to some dark
00:10:26and mysterious places
00:10:27on your travels
00:10:27so we can change the vibe
00:10:29inside of the studio
00:10:30and we've made a setting.
00:10:32You're going to be
00:10:32the first person
00:10:33that we use this new one on.
00:10:35You're going to put some dark music
00:10:36with me?
00:10:36I think just the darkness
00:10:38of the stories
00:10:39will probably do enough.
00:10:41Okay, would I say
00:10:42for anyone to pack up
00:10:43and go to Syria
00:10:44first trip abroad?
00:10:45No, definitely not.
00:10:46When I went
00:10:47was Christmas time.
00:10:48I flew in from Moscow
00:10:49two in the morning
00:10:50and it was all the lights,
00:10:53the green lights
00:10:54from above
00:10:55and those were all the mosques
00:10:56and I got in the cabbie
00:10:58and this was during
00:11:01George W. Bush
00:11:02and the cabbie was like,
00:11:05the driver was like,
00:11:06what do you think
00:11:07of George W. Bush?
00:11:08And I was against
00:11:08the Iraqi war
00:11:09and I just
00:11:10knocked off some pejoratives
00:11:13and he loved it.
00:11:14He was like,
00:11:15I was like,
00:11:16FGW blah, blah, blah.
00:11:18I'm in Texas
00:11:19so am I going to have
00:11:19problems with saying that?
00:11:22He was getting excited
00:11:24and all giddy
00:11:25and then I'm like,
00:11:26what do you think
00:11:26of Bashar al-Assad?
00:11:29And his giddiness
00:11:30firmed up,
00:11:31he got tense
00:11:32and he's like,
00:11:34Bashar al-Assad
00:11:35is a good president
00:11:36but he didn't feel that way
00:11:38and that was the first time
00:11:40I really realized
00:11:41how important free speech is,
00:11:42if you can't speak your mind
00:11:44then it controls your behavior.
00:11:46I saw him tense up
00:11:47and I was like,
00:11:48here I am in the Middle East
00:11:49saying whatever I want
00:11:50and this guy's at home
00:11:52and is worried
00:11:54even in his own car
00:11:56that this is going to be a problem.
00:11:58So Damascus,
00:12:00Christmas time,
00:12:01Santa Claus is everywhere.
00:12:03Who would have thought?
00:12:04Christian population there.
00:12:06Old Damascus.
00:12:07Met great people,
00:12:09stayed with locals
00:12:09in their homes.
00:12:11But for Americans
00:12:12getting abroad,
00:12:13I would say
00:12:13you want something
00:12:15that's culturally
00:12:17very different
00:12:17but still easy to travel?
00:12:20Istanbul,
00:12:21Turkey.
00:12:22Okay.
00:12:22That's a good middle road.
00:12:24If you want
00:12:24full-on user-friendly,
00:12:26go to where you're from,
00:12:27right?
00:12:28Mm-hmm.
00:12:28Use English.
00:12:29Seamless integration.
00:12:30It's easy.
00:12:30Could you see,
00:12:31I saw this
00:12:32news article earlier on,
00:12:34an LGBT cruise
00:12:36set off from the US
00:12:39trying to land in Turkey
00:12:43and they wanted to experience Turkey.
00:12:48It's a cruise of like,
00:12:50there's a lot of fruit going on.
00:12:55It's high levels of fruit
00:12:56on this,
00:12:58on the cruise.
00:12:59They look like,
00:13:00all of the guys look like
00:13:01they're having an amazing time.
00:13:02I'm sure it's really great.
00:13:03But they arrived,
00:13:04they arrived at Turkey
00:13:05and they were like,
00:13:08you're not coming.
00:13:09Like,
00:13:09you're not,
00:13:09you're not,
00:13:10you're not,
00:13:10you're not,
00:13:10you're not coming here.
00:13:12So I guess there is a little caveat
00:13:13which is make sure
00:13:14that your sexuality
00:13:15aligns with the local
00:13:16customs.
00:13:18Yeah,
00:13:18I love,
00:13:19I love the Middle East.
00:13:21Traveling there
00:13:21has been great,
00:13:22very hospitable
00:13:23with people,
00:13:23but hey,
00:13:24culture is different.
00:13:26Don't,
00:13:26don't fuck a dude
00:13:27while you're there.
00:13:28Yeah,
00:13:28I wasn't going to,
00:13:29but yeah,
00:13:30definitely don't.
00:13:30Very important.
00:13:31Yeah.
00:13:31That's not going to go over well.
00:13:33Yep.
00:13:33The rainbow flag
00:13:35in downtown
00:13:36Tehran
00:13:38or
00:13:38Masters
00:13:39isn't,
00:13:43isn't happening.
00:13:45Did you know
00:13:46your gut controls
00:13:47your energy,
00:13:48your recovery,
00:13:48how well you absorb
00:13:49everything that you eat
00:13:50and the one nutrient
00:13:51that keeps it
00:13:52all running properly
00:13:53is fiber?
00:13:54Well,
00:13:54it turns out
00:13:55that 95% of Americans
00:13:56don't get enough of it,
00:13:57which is why
00:13:58I'm such a huge fan
00:13:59of Momentsis Fiber Plus.
00:14:01Most fiber supplements
00:14:02are a one trick pony,
00:14:04one type of fiber solving,
00:14:06one part of the problem.
00:14:07Fiber Plus
00:14:07is a three-in-one formula
00:14:09built to tackle digestion,
00:14:10gut barrier strength
00:14:11and blood sugar stability
00:14:12all at once.
00:14:13I use this
00:14:14every single day.
00:14:15It is kind of hard
00:14:16to get enough fiber
00:14:17just through food alone
00:14:18and best of all,

00:14:41All right,
00:14:42so you do
00:14:42this huge trip
00:14:44around the world
00:14:45and then realize
00:14:47that America,
00:14:48home country,
00:14:49is this place
00:14:50that you understand
00:14:51maybe the least?
00:14:53Yeah,
00:14:53there are quite a few trips.
00:14:54That was the big one.
00:14:55I came back at 26
00:14:57and I just changed
00:14:59my whole perspective
00:15:00on everything
00:15:01and fast forward
00:15:03quite a bit
00:15:04until 38,
00:15:08what is it,
00:15:0840?
00:15:09No,
00:15:0942.
00:15:11Living in Ukraine,
00:15:12lived there for four years.
00:15:13My wife's Ukrainian.
00:15:14Okay.
00:15:15Pandemic brought us back
00:15:16because I shot roughly
00:15:1750 videos in Ukraine,
00:15:19pretty much tapped out.
00:15:21Pre-war?
00:15:21Pre-war.
00:15:22Wow.
00:15:23Yeah,
00:15:24I got some,
00:15:24that's where it all started
00:15:25actually.
00:15:26Tell me about that.
00:15:27I started in the countryside.
00:15:29I was in,
00:15:31I'll give you a little,
00:15:33just a little context to it.
00:15:35I tried to pitch
00:15:36a travel TV show
00:15:37in 2011-12
00:15:38to all the networks in LA.
00:15:40I was flying there
00:15:40every six weeks
00:15:41trying to pitch.
00:15:42I made a teaser reel.
00:15:44Hey guys,
00:15:45so I want to show Americans
00:15:46the world.
00:15:47Here's the concept.
00:15:48We're going to,
00:15:49we're going to hang out
00:15:49with locals.
00:15:51We're going to get
00:15:51into their stories.
00:15:53And the response was,
00:15:55like,
00:15:56who,
00:15:56who are you?
00:15:57And wait,
00:15:59what's the rising action
00:16:00in that?
00:16:00And,
00:16:01what?
00:16:01No.
00:16:02Door closed,
00:16:03door closed,
00:16:04door closed
00:16:04for about a half year.
00:16:06So I gave up
00:16:07on the whole travel concept
00:16:09because this was,
00:16:10YouTube was a thing,
00:16:11but to make your life
00:16:12off YouTube,
00:16:13I didn't,
00:16:14very few people were doing it.
00:16:15I didn't see it
00:16:16at that time.
00:16:18So I went on
00:16:19different ventures.
00:16:19I had a business that,
00:16:22a small business
00:16:23that pretty much
00:16:23paid my bills,
00:16:24but I was always trying
00:16:25for something more interesting,
00:16:26something I love.
00:16:26so I developed this app
00:16:28that connected people
00:16:29through common interests.
00:16:31So you're going
00:16:32to Germany,
00:16:32you love running,
00:16:34you date,
00:16:35activity,
00:16:36connects you
00:16:36with that person
00:16:37at that time.
00:16:39Who doesn't like
00:16:39to hang out
00:16:40with people
00:16:40that have similar interests?
00:16:42Just way over my skis.
00:16:44I was living in San Francisco.
00:16:45I was pitching that,
00:16:46pitching that.
00:16:47Wasn't working.
00:16:48So around 38,
00:16:50I'm sitting in Golden Gate Park
00:16:52trying to figure out
00:16:54what I'm going to do
00:16:55with my life.
00:16:56No clue.
00:16:56I'm like,
00:16:56I have to do something
00:16:57that's interesting
00:16:58and meaningful.
00:16:59I have my business
00:17:00limping me along.
00:17:02It's nothing I really
00:17:03want to be part of,
00:17:03but I have to do it
00:17:04to pay the bills.
00:17:06I'm reading books
00:17:07about philosophy
00:17:09and just business
00:17:12and trying to come up
00:17:13with something.
00:17:13My buddy moves to Ukraine.
00:17:15He had a dev team
00:17:16over there.
00:17:18He had a startup.
00:17:19I went and visited.
00:17:20He's like,
00:17:21dude,
00:17:21why don't you just
00:17:21stay right now?
00:17:23And subletted my apartment
00:17:24in San Francisco
00:17:25and moved over to Ukraine.
00:17:29And so the first story
00:17:30started when I was in Ukraine.
00:17:32I had a Turkish buddy say,
00:17:34hey man,
00:17:34you want to learn the language?
00:17:36Go to the countryside.
00:17:38And so I went out
00:17:39to the far reaches of Ukraine,
00:17:41which is where I was
00:17:42is de facto Russia now
00:17:45and live with this family
00:17:46whose apartment got bombed out
00:17:49in the far east of the country.
00:17:52They moved to the countryside,
00:17:53had zero,
00:17:54nothing,
00:17:54nothing materially.
00:17:57Six weeks there,
00:17:58six videos.
00:17:59We even dug a well by hand.
00:18:03Transformative experience.
00:18:04I mean,
00:18:04I was sleeping on a mattress
00:18:06straight out of
00:18:07the Romanov dynasty,
00:18:09springs going through my back.
00:18:11It was a,
00:18:12do you open the window
00:18:14at night
00:18:14and get the room down
00:18:16to 88 degrees
00:18:17and smell the neighbor's
00:18:18trash burning?
00:18:19Or you close it
00:18:21and have a room at 94
00:18:23and smell less trash?
00:18:25Okay,
00:18:25so very primitive conditions.
00:18:27But the Ukrainians loved it.
00:18:29They ate it up
00:18:30because I was doing things
00:18:32like selling corn
00:18:33on the beaches
00:18:34in Berdonsk
00:18:35because kukuruza,
00:18:37they say,
00:18:38they call it.
00:18:39People sell corn
00:18:39on the beach.
00:18:40I was walking around
00:18:41and there's a corn mafia
00:18:42there that controls
00:18:43the beach.
00:18:44I know exactly what,
00:18:47if this podcast thing
00:18:48goes to shit,
00:18:49I'm becoming part
00:18:49of the Ukrainian corn mafia.
00:18:51You should.
00:18:52The kukuruza mafiosa
00:18:53was all over my shtick
00:18:55and they ran me
00:18:57off that beach.
00:18:58This gringo selling.
00:18:59Yeah,
00:18:59but we made a video of it
00:19:00and the Ukrainians loved it.
00:19:01Right, cool.
00:19:02So you got big in Ukraine.
00:19:04Got big in,
00:19:04I got Ukraine famous.
00:19:06I was on all the television.
00:19:07I got Ukraine famous.
00:19:08Brilliant.
00:19:09I was all over TV
00:19:10and I was like,
00:19:11no way.
00:19:12Yep.
00:19:12This thing can actually work.
00:19:15And then I went to Iran
00:19:17and I had free range in Iran.
00:19:19Wow,
00:19:19you really managed
00:19:20to front run
00:19:21all of the biggest
00:19:23kinetic flashpoints.
00:19:25Yeah.
00:19:25You just got there.
00:19:26You were like the trans.
00:19:27Have you considered
00:19:27that you might be
00:19:28the harbinger of
00:19:29like international incidents?
00:19:32That's wherever
00:19:32Peter Salmonello's been?
00:19:35You're right.
00:19:36They should just lock me down here.
00:19:37You didn't stay
00:19:37in the Gaza Strip
00:19:38for a while,
00:19:38did you?
00:19:39I put some time.
00:19:40I didn't go into Gaza.
00:19:41I went to West America.
00:19:42Right, okay.
00:19:43You really had the harbinger.
00:19:44Okay, so you go to Iran.
00:19:45So I go to Iran,
00:19:46shoot that series.
00:19:48Now, Americans need
00:19:49a government-minded tour.
00:19:52They need to be
00:19:53with someone the whole time.
00:19:55Man, they're going to be
00:19:55on that tour
00:19:56with the person.
00:19:56They don't have free range.
00:19:58But I have an Italian passport.
00:20:00As an Italian,
00:20:01I could go over.
00:20:02I don't claim Italian at all.
00:20:03It's just through family.
00:20:04But I could use this document
00:20:06and get free range
00:20:08in the country.
00:20:08So that was novel.
00:20:10An American
00:20:10getting free range
00:20:11of the country
00:20:12and I made a series there
00:20:13and that did well.
00:20:14Then I went to Saudi
00:20:15right after it opened.
00:20:17Like right after it opened.
00:20:19But then there were failures.
00:20:20I went back to Ukraine
00:20:21and I had failures
00:20:23because here's the deal.
00:20:24Ukrainians loved Ukrainian content.
00:20:27Ukrainians didn't care
00:20:28about Iranian content.
00:20:29So I just lost my whole audience.
00:20:31You were audience
00:20:31captured by Ukraine.
00:20:34And then I was audience
00:20:34captured by Iran
00:20:36and then Saudi.
00:20:38Right.
00:20:38Really.
00:20:38It really is the algorithm
00:20:40coming to life here.
00:20:42Totally.
00:20:43And so I would get
00:20:44all these new audiences
00:20:45in new countries
00:20:46but there was no thread
00:20:47between them.
00:20:48Right.
00:20:49And I didn't have
00:20:50a big US audience
00:20:51at that time.
00:20:52Anyways,
00:20:53did that for a while.
00:20:54Pandemic hits.
00:20:56Where are we going to go?
00:20:57We're either going to move
00:20:57to Italy
00:20:58but Italy was really locked out.
00:20:58Have you met your missus yet?
00:21:00Your wife or future?
00:21:01Yeah, yeah.
00:21:02We were together
00:21:03like three
00:21:04out of my four years there.
00:21:06Okay.
00:21:06But did you meet her
00:21:07when you were in Ukraine?
00:21:08Yeah.
00:21:09When you were part of the
00:21:09fighting with the corn mafia?
00:21:12On one hand
00:21:12chatting up the
00:21:13Ukrainian future
00:21:14Mrs. Santinello
00:21:16and on the other hand
00:21:17ensuring you don't get killed
00:21:18by the corn mafia?
00:21:19Pre-Kukurusa mafiosa
00:21:20I'm like
00:21:21I'm off to the countryside
00:21:23living with this family.
00:21:24She thought it was a bit bizarre.
00:21:25And so did the rest
00:21:26of the Ukrainians
00:21:27because it was so fringe.
00:21:28Yep.
00:21:28In the cities
00:21:29they would never live like that.
00:21:31So here's this Yank guy
00:21:32going out there.
00:21:33So not too dissimilar
00:21:33to the US then?
00:21:35Right?
00:21:35You've already set
00:21:36a little bit of that tone
00:21:37of cosmopolitan life
00:21:39although this country
00:21:40might be weird
00:21:41from the country
00:21:41that I'm from.
00:21:42Yep.
00:21:43In most countries
00:21:44the modernity
00:21:46cosmopolist thing
00:21:48still looks at
00:21:50going to the countryside
00:21:51as kind of a
00:21:52what the fuck are you doing?
00:21:52Like this is going
00:21:53backward in time somehow.
00:21:54Yeah, but the delta
00:21:55is even greater there
00:21:56because I'm going
00:21:57really primitive.
00:21:58Yep.
00:21:58And then
00:22:01but the pandemic
00:22:01brought us back
00:22:02to the US
00:22:02and then when we got
00:22:04back to the US
00:22:04I'm like
00:22:05what are we going
00:22:06to do here?
00:22:08I know my country
00:22:09from here.
00:22:10What's interesting
00:22:11about the US?
00:22:12Six years later
00:22:13head still down
00:22:14going full speed.
00:22:16It took off.
00:22:18Americans loved it.
00:22:20And I mean
00:22:21from a
00:22:22like career standpoint
00:22:24having American viewers
00:22:28versus Belarusian
00:22:29or Ukrainian
00:22:30different game
00:22:31with actually
00:22:32you can make some money
00:22:33on YouTube
00:22:33to actually carry
00:22:34the thing forward.
00:22:35Are you telling me
00:22:35that there isn't
00:22:36a burgeoning
00:22:36e-com and CPG
00:22:38business in Iran?
00:22:40I can't get my
00:22:41Shopify store
00:22:41to deliver Nutonic
00:22:42to Iran?
00:22:43No.
00:22:43Nightmare.
00:22:44Well, it's all
00:22:44internal there.
00:22:45They're big enough
00:22:46where they have
00:22:47every industry
00:22:47pretty much
00:22:48working on its own
00:22:49for the most part.
00:22:49Apart from the
00:22:49nuclear one, yeah.
00:22:50Apart from...
00:22:51So, yeah.
00:22:55Then the US content
00:22:56ripped off
00:22:56and I remember
00:22:57being at home.
00:22:58My mom still lives
00:22:59in Vermont.
00:23:00I grew up in Vermont.
00:23:01Moved out at 18.
00:23:03But I went back
00:23:04to where I grew up
00:23:05and I told my buddy,
00:23:06my good buddy
00:23:07from youth,
00:23:07I'm like,
00:23:08hey, I'm going to
00:23:09go to New York City,
00:23:10shoot some videos
00:23:11with the Hasidic Jews
00:23:12and then go to
00:23:13the hoods
00:23:14and the projects
00:23:15and show that world.
00:23:16He's like,
00:23:16cool,
00:23:17but what are you
00:23:17going to do for work?
00:23:19And that was when
00:23:20it was like
00:23:21the money,
00:23:23the money,
00:23:24the runway
00:23:24wasn't that long.
00:23:26My business blew up.
00:23:27Got to make this work.
00:23:27Got to make this
00:23:28and right when
00:23:29I needed it to work,
00:23:30it worked.
00:23:32So,
00:23:32it's been six years
00:23:33nonstop
00:23:34and all of those videos
00:23:37have,
00:23:38um,
00:23:38I try to go wide
00:23:40as far as I can
00:23:41from the Amish
00:23:42to the Bloods
00:23:42and Crips
00:23:43and everything in between.
00:23:45What do you think
00:23:45most Americans
00:23:46don't understand
00:23:47about America?
00:23:49Yeah,
00:23:49uh,
00:23:50it doesn't sound,
00:23:52uh,
00:23:52really groundbreaking
00:23:52what I'm going to say,
00:23:54but just the scale
00:23:55and the amount
00:23:56of different lifestyles
00:23:57we have.
00:23:57You,
00:23:58you do have parts
00:23:59of America
00:23:59where they're still
00:24:01hunting a whale,
00:24:02whales every year,
00:24:04reindeer.
00:24:05Uh,
00:24:05you can see Russia.
00:24:07I'm talking about
00:24:07St. Lawrence Island,
00:24:09Siberian Yupik people,
00:24:10three times the size
00:24:11of Maui.
00:24:13America's still-
00:24:13Where is that?
00:24:14Yeah,
00:24:15way up in Alaska.
00:24:17So huge
00:24:18that as someone
00:24:20doing this full-time,
00:24:21I'm still discovering
00:24:22places I knew
00:24:23nothing about,
00:24:24didn't know they existed.
00:24:24So I found that
00:24:25with Google Maps
00:24:27late night
00:24:27and I'm like,
00:24:28what's that?
00:24:28You're fucking kidding me.
00:24:29You geo-guessered
00:24:30your way.
00:24:31I totally.
00:24:32Like just zoom in,
00:24:33pinch and zoom in.
00:24:33Zoom in, zoom in.
00:24:34Okay, two towns.
00:24:35There's USPS
00:24:36and a church.
00:24:37There's no street view.
00:24:38What's going on up there?
00:24:40I'll check that out.
00:24:41And then you have
00:24:42Miami's in the same country,
00:24:44capital of Latin America.
00:24:46Two different universes.
00:24:48So we're all in our bubbles.
00:24:50Doesn't matter where you live.
00:24:51We're in our bubbles.
00:24:53My goal is to teach
00:24:55or show Americans
00:24:56about different bubbles
00:24:57that they might not interact with.
00:24:59That could be
00:25:00inner city hoods.
00:25:01That could be
00:25:02the richest hoods.
00:25:03That could be
00:25:04deep with the Amish.
00:25:06Native culture.
00:25:08We have 576
00:25:10federally recognized tribes
00:25:12in this country
00:25:12and they're all different.
00:25:13That's like a whole
00:25:14different parallel universe.
00:25:16A whole different world
00:25:17running on its own.
00:25:19You have everything
00:25:19from Navajo Nation
00:25:20in Arizona,
00:25:22size of New Jersey,
00:25:23size of Israel basically.
00:25:26It's different laws,
00:25:27different rules.
00:25:28Just like Israel, yeah.
00:25:29Just like Israel.
00:25:31And then you have Cherokee
00:25:32in North Carolina.
00:25:34You put kids
00:25:35from each one
00:25:35of those tribes
00:25:37and swap them.
00:25:39It's like a wild
00:25:40cultural experience
00:25:41for them.
00:25:42Native American world
00:25:44is like European countries.
00:25:47You can't just say
00:25:48you're European, yes.
00:25:51But you're not Italian.
00:25:52You're not Norwegian.
00:25:54You got some Viking
00:25:55in you maybe.
00:25:57Okay.
00:25:57But you get what I'm saying, right?
00:25:59Every country has,
00:25:59and that's how
00:26:00the native world is.
00:26:01It's like different countries.
00:26:02They're all native.
00:26:03They're all,
00:26:04just like Europeans,
00:26:04they're all European.
00:26:05But Ukraine and the UK
00:26:06are two different universes.
00:26:08So that's been surprising.
00:26:11Just the amount
00:26:12of depth we have here
00:26:14and how granular it goes
00:26:16when you really
00:26:18look at it closely.
00:26:19Talk to me
00:26:20about the native peoples
00:26:21that you've spent time with
00:26:22because coming over here,
00:26:25I've really enjoyed
00:26:26immersing myself
00:26:27in going to different places.
00:26:29I've taken a lot
00:26:30of big road trips.
00:26:32But I've not done
00:26:34anything like
00:26:34what you've done.
00:26:35I've gone from New Orleans.
00:26:36It's so interesting.
00:26:37The French Quarter downtown.
00:26:39Oh my God,
00:26:40I can get a beignet
00:26:40and spill it everywhere.
00:26:41I'm like,
00:26:42okay, come on, dude.
00:26:43Like,
00:26:44what have you learned
00:26:46from the native tribes
00:26:49and the descendants of them
00:26:50that you've spent time with?
00:26:53They're all different,
00:26:54but there's a thread
00:26:55that you've,
00:26:55they're all different,
00:26:57but there's a similarity
00:26:58as in you get in
00:27:00the native world,
00:27:02the stories get more interesting,
00:27:04the pace slows down.
00:27:06There's,
00:27:07you get a bit away
00:27:08from the capitalistic drum
00:27:10of the Western world.
00:27:12That would be
00:27:13my initial feeling.
00:27:15They're,
00:27:15they're wonderful storytellers.
00:27:17They can almost put you
00:27:18like in the Siberian Yupik.
00:27:21I was with this woman,
00:27:22Adora.
00:27:23It's like she put me
00:27:24in a trance.
00:27:25She was like hypnotizing me
00:27:27with her stories.
00:27:28They have an ability
00:27:29to deliver a story
00:27:31and they have a great sense
00:27:32of humor
00:27:32and they all play hoops.
00:27:34Hoops is the basketball.
00:27:36That's what keeps them together.
00:27:38All the tribes play hoops.
00:27:40It's big rivalry.
00:27:41What's their
00:27:42relationship or story
00:27:46like with
00:27:47what America is
00:27:49and has become now?
00:27:50Because you could imagine
00:27:51there's maybe
00:27:52some ancestral resentment
00:27:54in there.
00:27:56Do you ever sense that?
00:27:58Is that something
00:27:58that comes through?
00:27:59Depends who you talk to.
00:28:01So the highest enrollment
00:28:02in the military per capita
00:28:04is Native American.
00:28:06No fucking way.
00:28:07Yeah.
00:28:07So you have true patriots,
00:28:09flags waving.
00:28:10You have some believe
00:28:12that believe in traditional beliefs,
00:28:14other very Christian.
00:28:16You have some
00:28:18that are pissed.
00:28:19Traditional beliefs
00:28:19would be more like
00:28:20animal spirit type stuff.
00:28:22Exactly.
00:28:23Right.
00:28:23Cool.
00:28:23In getting really deep
00:28:24into their clans,
00:28:25they have different clans.
00:28:26There's clan culture.
00:28:29You have places like
00:28:30in Navajo Nation,
00:28:32you get into the hogan,
00:28:33into the hut
00:28:33and you got to walk
00:28:35clockwise in the hut.
00:28:37Never,
00:28:37ever go counterclockwise.
00:28:40It's going to bring
00:28:40so much bad to you.
00:28:41So if you drop your keys
00:28:43here,
00:28:44like for those listening,
00:28:46so to my right,
00:28:49like don't just pick them up there,
00:28:51like circle the whole thing
00:28:52and pick them up.
00:28:55I find that stuff fascinating.
00:28:57But no,
00:28:57everyone,
00:28:58there's no consensus,
00:29:00I would say.
00:29:01So sometimes people will say,
00:29:02hey,
00:29:03they're not Indians,
00:29:04they're Natives
00:29:04or Native Americans
00:29:05or Indigenous
00:29:06or First Nations.
00:29:07You know what
00:29:08they say they are?
00:29:10The only consensus
00:29:12is there isn't one.
00:29:14Depends who you talk to.
00:29:16Some say,
00:29:16I'm Indian.
00:29:17Lakota medicine man
00:29:18in South Dakota
00:29:19said,
00:29:20I'm the Native American
00:29:21because he was way before
00:29:24it was called America,
00:29:25his family.
00:29:26I grew up in America.
00:29:28Before we continue,
00:29:29most people in their 30s
00:29:30are still training hard.
00:29:31Their protein is dialed in.
00:29:32They sleep better
00:29:33than they did
00:29:34in their 20s.
00:29:35Discipline
00:29:35is not the issue,
00:29:37but recovery feels
00:29:38somewhat different.
00:29:40Strength gains
00:29:40take a little longer.
00:29:41The margin for error
00:29:42starts to shrink.
00:29:44And that is why
00:29:44I'm such a huge fan
00:29:45of Timeline.
00:29:46You see,
00:29:47mitochondria
00:29:48are the energy producers
00:29:49inside of your muscle cells.
00:29:50As they weaken with age,
00:29:52your ability to generate power
00:29:53and recover effectively
00:29:54changes,
00:29:55even if your habits
00:29:57stay strong.
00:29:58MitoPure from Timeline
00:29:59contains the only
00:30:00clinically validated form
00:30:01of urithulin A
00:30:02used in human trials.
00:30:04It promotes mitophagy,
00:30:05which is your body's
00:30:05natural process,
00:30:06for clearing out
00:30:07damaged mitochondria
00:30:08and renewing healthy ones.
00:30:09In studies,
00:30:10this supported
00:30:12mitochondrial function
00:30:13and muscle strength
00:30:14in older adults.
00:30:15It's not about pushing harder,
00:30:16it's about actually
00:30:16supporting the cellular
00:30:17machinery underneath
00:30:19your training.
00:30:19If you care about
00:30:20staying strong
00:30:21into your 30s,
00:30:2240s,
00:30:22and 50s and beyond,
00:30:24this is foundational.
00:30:25Best of all,
00:30:26there is a 30-day
00:30:27money-back guarantee,
00:30:28plus free shipping
00:30:28in the US,
00:30:29and they ship
00:30:29internationally.
00:30:30And right now,
00:30:31you can get up to 20%

00:30:41and modernwisdom
00:30:43at checkout.
00:30:44Is there vestigial resentment?
00:30:48There's some.
00:30:49I mean,
00:30:50there's some that go back
00:30:52to the certain battles
00:30:54like Wounded Knee.
00:30:56What was it?
00:30:57300 and something died.
00:30:59I think it was Custer's Army
00:31:00took out the Lakota.
00:31:01I believe it was.
00:31:03And that really affected
00:31:04the guy I was hanging out with.
00:31:06It was back in the 1800s.
00:31:08And then some people
00:31:09are like Vietnamese,
00:31:11as in they let it go
00:31:13really quickly.
00:31:14You go to Vietnam these days,
00:31:16you'd think they would
00:31:17hate all Americans.
00:31:18They don't.
00:31:20He's watching a war flick
00:31:21with a bunch of Vietnamese dude.
00:31:22American war flick.
00:31:23How crazy was that?
00:31:26Just really depends.
00:31:28And then economically,
00:31:31some tribes are really poor.
00:31:33I mean,
00:31:33the de facto is
00:31:34it's worse on the res
00:31:36materially,
00:31:37economically,
00:31:38than off the res.
00:31:38It's worse on the res?
00:31:39Yeah.
00:31:39Why?
00:31:40Just less jobs,
00:31:41remote areas,
00:31:43not as much
00:31:44industry.
00:31:45But then some res is
00:31:46it's wealthy as all could be.
00:31:49Great gambling.
00:31:51You go to the Seminoles
00:31:52in South Florida,
00:31:54they own the Hard Rock brand
00:31:56worldwide.
00:31:57I think they paid
00:31:58800 million for it
00:31:59back in the day.
00:32:00Hang on.
00:32:01Yeah.
00:32:01The Hard Rock brand
00:32:02worldwide
00:32:03is owned
00:32:04by the Seminoles.
00:32:06by some
00:32:06indigenous
00:32:08Native American
00:32:09descendant people
00:32:09in...
00:32:10100%.
00:32:11And their tribe,
00:32:13I believe,
00:32:14don't quote me on this,
00:32:15it's roughly
00:32:164,500
00:32:17people.
00:32:19They started
00:32:19in Indian gaming.
00:32:22They have
00:32:23agricultural operations.
00:32:24I believe
00:32:25gas and oil
00:32:26operations,
00:32:28Hard Rock Cafe.
00:32:30So these guys
00:32:31are just
00:32:31hardcore entrepreneurs.
00:32:33Hardcore
00:32:33entrepreneurs.
00:32:37And
00:32:37you know,
00:32:39when I get into
00:32:39these communities,
00:32:40I always want people
00:32:40on my videos
00:32:41to want to be
00:32:43on my videos.
00:32:45I don't want
00:32:45to just show up
00:32:46on a camera
00:32:46and put a camera
00:32:47in someone's face
00:32:47if they don't want it.
00:32:49A tribal council member
00:32:50I put up
00:32:51on my Insta,
00:32:52I said,
00:32:52I want to get
00:32:53a Seminole story.
00:32:53I know it was very
00:32:54difficult to get
00:32:55with them.
00:32:56And
00:32:56tribal council member
00:32:58reached out,
00:32:59said,
00:32:59I'm a council member.
00:33:00I can show you.
00:33:01You should watch
00:33:01my content.
00:33:02So I went there.
00:33:04We're talking gates.
00:33:05We're talking
00:33:06background checks
00:33:07with IDs
00:33:07and everything.
00:33:08I'm in
00:33:09the nerve center,
00:33:10the offices.
00:33:11You went to
00:33:11the Pentagon
00:33:12of the
00:33:12indigenous people.
00:33:14Totally.
00:33:14Right.
00:33:16And
00:33:16I'm like,
00:33:18this is the most
00:33:18by the book
00:33:19thing I've ever
00:33:19done with video
00:33:20making.
00:33:21I'm like,
00:33:21totally official here.
00:33:22Actually feel like
00:33:23press.
00:33:23Yeah,
00:33:23I've got credentials.
00:33:24Yeah,
00:33:24it's like I'm
00:33:25doing all the
00:33:26right things.
00:33:28This woman
00:33:29takes me out.
00:33:29We show the tribe.
00:33:30We show the world.
00:33:31It was very much
00:33:32a North Korean tour
00:33:33as in everything.
00:33:34Just showed the good
00:33:35for the most part.
00:33:38And
00:33:38I got a call
00:33:40from their attorney
00:33:41right after that
00:33:42thing posted.
00:33:43They wanted that
00:33:44down
00:33:45immediately.
00:33:47He said
00:33:47something along
00:33:48the lines
00:33:49of
00:33:49are you
00:33:50familiar
00:33:51with the
00:33:51case we
00:33:52disclosed
00:33:52with Wells
00:33:53Fargo?
00:33:54I believe
00:33:55I forget
00:33:56how much
00:33:56they won.
00:33:57It was
00:33:57something like
00:33:59800 million
00:33:59or something.
00:34:01And I'm like,
00:34:01no,
00:34:01but congratulations
00:34:02on that.
00:34:03He's like,
00:34:03well,
00:34:04we're going to need
00:34:05that video.
00:34:05That's a little
00:34:06bit of a flex.
00:34:07It's the equivalent
00:34:08of North Korea
00:34:08showing their
00:34:09ballistic missiles
00:34:09on a parade.
00:34:11Total flex.
00:34:12And my law team
00:34:13wasn't going to
00:34:13fight with theirs
00:34:14because I have
00:34:15one person
00:34:16that I can
00:34:16call.
00:34:16That's not
00:34:17going to deal
00:34:17with those
00:34:17three sources.
00:34:19No,
00:34:19they have
00:34:20billions of
00:34:22dollars.
00:34:22And those
00:34:24things.
00:34:24So what I'm
00:34:25saying is it's
00:34:26so widely
00:34:27varied.
00:34:27You can go to
00:34:28Pine Ridge,
00:34:29it's the poorest
00:34:30native res in the
00:34:30country where it
00:34:32looks poor and
00:34:32it looks rough.
00:34:33And then you
00:34:34have on the
00:34:34other end of
00:34:35the spectrum,
00:34:36the Seminoles
00:34:36who are fantastic
00:34:38capitalists that
00:34:39figured out the
00:34:40game really well.
00:34:41And I believe,
00:34:43and I don't know
00:34:44exactly the
00:34:45number,
00:34:46but it's like
00:34:46128,000 per
00:34:49kid every year.
00:34:51What?
00:34:53So they all
00:34:53revenue that
00:34:54they're distributing?
00:34:55Yeah.
00:34:56So they come out
00:34:57of high school
00:34:57all millionaires.
00:34:59Now, I don't
00:35:00know the,
00:35:01I don't want to
00:35:01get myself in
00:35:02trouble on the
00:35:02exact number
00:35:03because it
00:35:04changes hard
00:35:04information to
00:35:05get.
00:35:06But there's
00:35:07that end of
00:35:07the spectrum
00:35:08and then there's
00:35:09the other
00:35:11end of the
00:35:11spectrum.
00:35:12So that's my
00:35:13point about
00:35:13America.
00:35:15The more you
00:35:16go deep,
00:35:16the more you
00:35:17go granular,
00:35:18it's complicated
00:35:18and there's so
00:35:19much rad
00:35:20stuff here.
00:35:20You really
00:35:21don't know
00:35:22what's going
00:35:22on because
00:35:23you're busy
00:35:23in your own
00:35:23life.
00:35:24We all
00:35:24are doing
00:35:25your own
00:35:25thing and
00:35:27it gives
00:35:28a lifetime
00:35:29of discovery.
00:35:32It's crazy
00:35:32that,
00:35:33you know,
00:35:34it's easy to,
00:35:34can you chat
00:35:35GPT?
00:35:35How many
00:35:36Americans have
00:35:37got a passport
00:35:37for me,
00:35:38Jared?
00:35:38I'm pretty
00:35:38sure it's
00:35:39like only
00:35:4060% of
00:35:40Americans have
00:35:41got a
00:35:41passport.
00:35:4160?
00:35:42Yeah,
00:35:42I think so.
00:35:44And it's
00:35:45easy,
00:35:45as you said
00:35:46before,
00:35:46you can be
00:35:46judgmental
00:35:47about that.
00:35:47Think about
00:35:47how big
00:35:48the world
00:35:48is and
00:35:49by virtue
00:35:50of being
00:35:50unable or
00:35:51unwilling to
00:35:52get the
00:35:52credentials to
00:35:53be able to
00:35:53travel,
00:35:53you can't
00:35:54travel,
00:35:54but without
00:35:56leaving the
00:35:56country,
00:35:57you guys
00:35:58have got
00:35:58more than
00:35:5850 countries
00:35:59inside of
00:36:01here.
00:36:01But half
00:36:02of Americans
00:36:02have a valid
00:36:03passport.
00:36:03State Department
00:36:04estimated
00:36:0451%,
00:36:05170 million
00:36:06people in
00:36:07late 2024.
00:36:08That is
00:36:10fucking
00:36:11insane.
00:36:12You got to
00:36:12think though,
00:36:13half the
00:36:14population does
00:36:15not have the
00:36:16money to go
00:36:16anywhere.
00:36:17Or the time,
00:36:18even if you
00:36:18had some of
00:36:19the money,
00:36:20the time that
00:36:21you would need
00:36:21to take off
00:36:22in order to be
00:36:22able to travel
00:36:23without your
00:36:23obligations for
00:36:24Thanksgiving and
00:36:24Christmas and
00:36:25all that.
00:36:26travel.
00:36:26It makes total
00:36:27sense.
00:36:27I don't get it.
00:36:28I do.
00:36:29I'm a big
00:36:30proponent of
00:36:30travel, for
00:36:31sure.
00:36:32But you don't
00:36:32actually need to
00:36:33leave the
00:36:33country.
00:36:34In a way,
00:36:35yes and no.
00:36:35You can
00:36:36constantly learn
00:36:37and discover,
00:36:38and every
00:36:38state has its
00:36:38own identity.
00:36:39Being in
00:36:40Texas this
00:36:40time, it's
00:36:41like its own
00:36:42country, for
00:36:42sure.
00:36:43The big
00:36:43states in
00:36:44America,
00:36:44California,
00:36:45New York,
00:36:46Texas,
00:36:46Florida, with
00:36:47big populations,
00:36:48they have
00:36:49their own gravity
00:36:50to them.
00:36:51What's the
00:36:54poorest place
00:36:55that you
00:36:55visited in
00:36:55America?
00:36:59Technically,
00:36:59well, I
00:37:00would say two
00:37:00regions really
00:37:01stand out.
00:37:02We're talking
00:37:02wide regions.
00:37:05Central
00:37:05Appalachia,
00:37:06so that's
00:37:07like West
00:37:08Virginia area,
00:37:09Eastern
00:37:09Kentucky.
00:37:11It's out
00:37:11there.
00:37:11You got to
00:37:12check that
00:37:12out.
00:37:13Great
00:37:13people, but
00:37:14poor.
00:37:15Mississippi
00:37:15Delta would
00:37:16be the
00:37:16other big
00:37:16region.
00:37:19Those two
00:37:19sort of
00:37:21left behind.
00:37:22You don't
00:37:22know U.S.
00:37:23cultural
00:37:23context.
00:37:23You're
00:37:24saying, I
00:37:25think it's
00:37:25changing a
00:37:26little, but
00:37:26back in
00:37:27the day,
00:37:27the butt
00:37:28of any
00:37:28joke would
00:37:29be like
00:37:29the West
00:37:29Virginia
00:37:30hillbilly.
00:37:32Looked
00:37:32out upon
00:37:32with
00:37:33Hollywood.
00:37:34It's
00:37:34where a
00:37:35lot of
00:37:36the
00:37:36industry,
00:37:36the
00:37:37coal
00:37:37came
00:37:37from
00:37:38to
00:37:38build
00:37:38this
00:37:39country.
00:37:39You
00:37:40have
00:37:40those
00:37:40regions
00:37:40in
00:37:41the
00:37:41UK
00:37:41too.
00:37:42We
00:37:42do.
00:37:43But
00:37:43you
00:37:43don't
00:37:43have
00:37:43the
00:37:43room.
00:37:44The
00:37:44thing
00:37:44that's
00:37:45fascinating
00:37:45watching
00:37:45your
00:37:45videos
00:37:46is
00:37:46just
00:37:47how
00:37:47much
00:37:47fucking
00:37:47space
00:37:48there
00:37:48is.
00:37:49When you
00:37:49talk
00:37:49about
00:37:50forgotten
00:37:50areas,
00:37:51lost
00:37:52towns,
00:37:54I don't
00:37:54know how
00:37:54much can
00:37:55be
00:37:55forgotten
00:37:55in a
00:37:56place
00:37:56that's
00:37:56got
00:37:5610
00:37:57times
00:37:57the
00:37:57population
00:37:58density
00:37:58of the
00:37:59U.S.
00:38:00We've
00:38:00got 50
00:38:02million
00:38:02people
00:38:02versus
00:38:04330,
00:38:06350
00:38:06or
00:38:06whatever
00:38:07is
00:38:07over
00:38:07here.
00:38:08But
00:38:08the
00:38:09land
00:38:09mass
00:38:09is
00:38:09so
00:38:10much
00:38:10smaller
00:38:11than
00:38:11the
00:38:11amount
00:38:12of
00:38:12people
00:38:12are
00:38:12smaller.
00:38:12It's
00:38:1310
00:38:13times
00:38:13denser.
00:38:14So
00:38:14everyone's
00:38:15on top
00:38:15of
00:38:15each
00:38:15other.
00:38:16You
00:38:16don't
00:38:16drive
00:38:17for
00:38:17that
00:38:17long
00:38:18without
00:38:21seeing
00:38:21something
00:38:22that
00:38:22looks
00:38:22like
00:38:22a
00:38:22hub.
00:38:23On
00:38:24the
00:38:24road
00:38:24trips
00:38:24that
00:38:24I've
00:38:24done
00:38:24around
00:38:25America,
00:38:25it
00:38:25is
00:38:26barren
00:38:27for
00:38:28huge
00:38:29periods
00:38:29of
00:38:29time.
00:38:30And
00:38:30then
00:38:30there's
00:38:30some
00:38:32farm
00:38:32that
00:38:33comes
00:38:33past
00:38:33or
00:38:33just
00:38:33some
00:38:34caravan
00:38:37park,
00:38:38mobile
00:38:38home,
00:38:39we would
00:38:39call it
00:38:39in
00:38:39the
00:38:39UK,
00:38:40with
00:38:42shit
00:38:43tons
00:38:43of
00:38:43trucks.
00:38:44There's
00:38:44a
00:38:44random
00:38:44tractor
00:38:45there,
00:38:45some
00:38:45guy's
00:38:45got a
00:38:46bike
00:38:46that's
00:38:46just
00:38:46in
00:38:47parts,
00:38:47and then
00:38:48it just
00:38:49leaves,
00:38:49and then
00:38:49something
00:38:50else
00:38:50comes up.
00:38:51So yeah,
00:38:52forgotten
00:38:52towns,
00:38:53I think
00:38:54the opportunity
00:38:55for that to
00:38:56happen in
00:38:56America is
00:38:57much higher,
00:38:58because you
00:38:59don't just
00:38:59have this
00:39:00sort of
00:39:00stumbling
00:39:00effect,
00:39:01you really
00:39:02can be
00:39:02incredibly
00:39:03detached,
00:39:04detachment
00:39:05and detachment
00:39:05would lead
00:39:05to
00:39:05alienation,
00:39:06and then
00:39:07that's
00:39:08going to
00:39:08really
00:39:09start to
00:39:09drive down
00:39:12your ability
00:39:12to be
00:39:15integrated
00:39:15with the
00:39:16rest of
00:39:16the country.
00:39:18Yeah,
00:39:18good point.
00:39:19Out there
00:39:19in Appalachia,
00:39:21I mean,
00:39:22there are
00:39:22coal jobs
00:39:22now,
00:39:23not as
00:39:24many as
00:39:24there were,
00:39:25but a lot
00:39:25of young
00:39:25people don't
00:39:26want to
00:39:26get into
00:39:26that,
00:39:27understandably
00:39:27so.
00:39:29you think
00:39:30about those
00:39:31guys,
00:39:32the inner
00:39:33city kid,
00:39:35like,
00:39:36living in
00:39:36the hood,
00:39:37the projects,
00:39:38has way
00:39:39more,
00:39:40okay,
00:39:40in theory,
00:39:42way more
00:39:42chance to
00:39:43tap into
00:39:44an economy,
00:39:45just because
00:39:46it's literally
00:39:46six subway
00:39:48stops away.
00:39:49Now you're
00:39:50going to have
00:39:50to pull up
00:39:50your pants,
00:39:51you're going
00:39:51to have to
00:39:51work hard,
00:39:52you're going
00:39:52to have to
00:39:53get the
00:39:55skills,
00:39:55but that
00:39:56opportunity
00:39:56is there
00:39:57where the
00:39:58kid out in
00:39:58the middle
00:39:59of
00:39:59Appalachia
00:40:00there's
00:40:01no real
00:40:01opportunity
00:40:02around to
00:40:03go get.
00:40:04What are
00:40:04people doing
00:40:05in these
00:40:06places in
00:40:06Appalachia?
00:40:07What do
00:40:07they do
00:40:07for work?
00:40:09There's a
00:40:09lot of
00:40:10drugs,
00:40:11unfortunately.
00:40:12Selling
00:40:12drugs.
00:40:13Using
00:40:14drugs,
00:40:14selling
00:40:14drugs,
00:40:15the
00:40:15full
00:40:15monte.
00:40:18I find
00:40:18it to be
00:40:19really
00:40:19extreme as
00:40:20in people
00:40:21are either
00:40:21working
00:40:21really
00:40:22hard and
00:40:22doing
00:40:22well
00:40:23for
00:40:23themselves,
00:40:24carrying
00:40:24along,
00:40:25or deep
00:40:27in the
00:40:27poverty
00:40:27and the
00:40:28drugs.
00:40:29Do you
00:40:31know of
00:40:31the
00:40:31Sackler
00:40:32family?
00:40:33The
00:40:33pill mills?
00:40:34Yes,
00:40:35yes,
00:40:35yes,
00:40:35yes.
00:40:35I've watched
00:40:36a million
00:40:36documentaries.
00:40:37So Oxycontin,
00:40:38that was
00:40:38sort of the
00:40:39testing ground
00:40:40because all
00:40:41of these
00:40:42coal miners,
00:40:43it's hard
00:40:44work,
00:40:44they'd be in
00:40:45a lot of
00:40:45pain.
00:40:46I met
00:40:46up with
00:40:46a fourth
00:40:47generation
00:40:48coal miner.
00:40:49He said
00:40:49he was
00:40:49one of the
00:40:50first one
00:40:50put on
00:40:51that
00:40:51medication,
00:40:52on that
00:40:53drug,
00:40:54and it's
00:40:55highly
00:40:55addictive.
00:40:57And then
00:40:57when the
00:40:57jobs
00:40:58left
00:40:58town,
00:40:59a lot
00:40:59of
00:40:59them,
00:41:00well,
00:41:01the
00:41:01addiction
00:41:01became
00:41:01that
00:41:02much
00:41:02greater
00:41:02because
00:41:03your
00:41:04life's
00:41:04looking
00:41:04terrible
00:41:04and
00:41:05this
00:41:05thing
00:41:05feels
00:41:05great.
00:41:06It's not
00:41:06just the
00:41:07physical
00:41:07pain,
00:41:07it's the
00:41:07psychic
00:41:08pain.
00:41:08Psychic pain too.
00:41:09So there's
00:41:11still fallout
00:41:12of that.
00:41:12Now it
00:41:13got better
00:41:13with that
00:41:14and then
00:41:14fentanyl
00:41:15hit pretty
00:41:16hard around
00:41:17five,
00:41:18six years
00:41:18ago.
00:41:18The Chinese
00:41:19Oxycontin.
00:41:19Yeah,
00:41:20exactly.
00:41:22So I
00:41:25like to
00:41:26highlight the
00:41:27problems in
00:41:28this country.
00:41:29We have
00:41:29plenty of
00:41:30them.
00:41:30The good,
00:41:31the bad,
00:41:31the ugly
00:41:32though.
00:41:33A lot
00:41:34of positive
00:41:34stuff.
00:41:35I don't
00:41:35just go for
00:41:36the heavy,
00:41:36I don't just
00:41:37want to go
00:41:37for the crime
00:41:38and the
00:41:38drugs.
00:41:39Now these
00:41:40things need
00:41:40to be brought
00:41:41to the
00:41:41surface,
00:41:42but I want
00:41:42someone to
00:41:43see my
00:41:43YouTube
00:41:44channel,
00:41:45look at
00:41:45all the
00:41:46videos on
00:41:46it and be
00:41:46like,
00:41:47oh,
00:41:48that America
00:41:49place,
00:41:50that's pretty
00:41:50cool.
00:41:51Yeah,
00:41:52it's got
00:41:52its issues.
00:41:53I don't
00:41:54want to be
00:41:54online just
00:41:55being like
00:41:56full
00:41:57dopamine
00:41:58driven
00:41:59rage bait
00:42:00where they
00:42:01look at it
00:42:01and it's
00:42:01like,
00:42:02that's
00:42:02awful.
00:42:03There is
00:42:03a kind
00:42:03of tragedy
00:42:04porn
00:42:04that,
00:42:05you know,
00:42:06what's that
00:42:06area in
00:42:07Philly
00:42:07that's got
00:42:08Kensington.
00:42:08Kensington.
00:42:10And,
00:42:10you know,
00:42:10if you want
00:42:11to do a
00:42:11two million
00:42:13play vlog,
00:42:14you just go to
00:42:14Kensington and
00:42:15interview some
00:42:15people about how
00:42:16the legs falling
00:42:17off and no one
00:42:19really cares and I
00:42:20used this needle
00:42:20five times last
00:42:21week and
00:42:22everything's
00:42:22horrible.
00:42:23So Kensington,
00:42:24I wasn't going to
00:42:26shoot a Kensington
00:42:26story because
00:42:27it's been done so
00:42:28many times.
00:42:29Too trite.
00:42:30Yeah,
00:42:30I want to be on
00:42:31the front edge
00:42:32of things.
00:42:33I want to be
00:42:33able to see
00:42:33Russia.
00:42:34Yes.
00:42:35If I can't see
00:42:35Russia,
00:42:35it doesn't
00:42:36count.
00:42:36Exactly.
00:42:37But there's
00:42:39this guy,
00:42:39his name was
00:42:40Buddy.
00:42:41His name's
00:42:41Buddy.
00:42:42He's bringing
00:42:43kids off the
00:42:43street.
00:42:44He's got a
00:42:45boxing clinic and
00:42:48religious rehab and
00:42:51he's doing something
00:42:51good, trying to
00:42:52change it.
00:42:53So, okay, I want
00:42:54that story now because
00:42:56here's a big problem.
00:42:57Here's somewhat of a
00:42:58solution.
00:42:59Let's show that,
00:43:00like give a little
00:43:00hope in the thing.
00:43:01So I did that story
00:43:02two years ago.
00:43:04I can honestly
00:43:05say after being in
00:43:07the hoods of
00:43:09Karachi, Pakistan,
00:43:11in the slums of
00:43:12India, there's
00:43:13nowhere more
00:43:14disheartening than
00:43:15Kensington.
00:43:16No way.
00:43:17Fact.
00:43:18Because it is the
00:43:20on the fentanyl,
00:43:21on the trank,
00:43:22face down in the
00:43:24curb and we're
00:43:25just going to let
00:43:25this go.
00:43:26Yeah, so it's
00:43:27more disheartening
00:43:28because of the
00:43:30prevalence of drugs
00:43:31and that's the
00:43:32sort of
00:43:32hopelessness?
00:43:33Not necessarily
00:43:34it's the way we're
00:43:35dealing with it.
00:43:37So for me,
00:43:38compassion would
00:43:39be, hey, that
00:43:40guy's deep in on
00:43:41fent.
00:43:42He's not looking
00:43:43good.
00:43:45He's bleeding.
00:43:46There's a wound.
00:43:47Like we got it.
00:43:48We got to change
00:43:49it.
00:43:49We got to get, if I
00:43:50had the power, I'd
00:43:50be like, that guy
00:43:51needs to be brought
00:43:52off the street.
00:43:52Even if he doesn't
00:43:53want to go, the
00:43:56best thing for him
00:43:57would be going to
00:43:58rehab of some
00:43:59sort, a therapy.
00:44:01Nobody gets on
00:44:02fent because their
00:44:03life is great.
00:44:04Oh, I had a great
00:44:05day today.
00:44:05I'll go do some
00:44:06fent, right?
00:44:07It's because things
00:44:08are terrible.
00:44:09I mean, it is a
00:44:09Friday.
00:44:10You want to do
00:44:11some?
00:44:11Yeah, fuck it.
00:44:13Let's go to
00:44:136th Street and get
00:44:14some fent, dude.
00:44:15I'm sure it feels
00:44:15great.
00:44:16Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:44:17Until your leg
00:44:18falls off.
00:44:19But until you're on,
00:44:19and then you're on
00:44:20Kensington and it's
00:44:21not so great.
00:44:22Most people don't
00:44:23realize how much
00:44:24being dehydrated
00:44:25impacts their
00:44:26performance, which is
00:44:26why for the last
00:44:27five years, I've
00:44:28started pretty much
00:44:29every morning with
00:44:30Element.
00:44:30Element is a tasty
00:44:31electrolyte drink mix
00:44:32with everything that
00:44:33you need and nothing
00:44:34that you don't.
00:44:35This orange salt in a
00:44:36cold glass of water is
00:44:38like a sweet, salty,
00:44:40orangey nectar and I
00:44:42really tell the
00:44:43difference when I take
00:44:44it versus when I
00:44:45don't.
00:44:45It plays a critical
00:44:46role in reducing
00:44:47muscle cramps and
00:44:48fatigue, helps to
00:44:48optimize brain health
00:44:49and regulate your
00:44:51appetite while also
00:44:52curbing cravings.
00:44:53Best of all, there
00:44:53are no questions asked
00:44:54refund policy with an
00:44:55unlimited duration, so
00:44:56you can buy it and
00:44:57try it for as long as
00:44:58you want.
00:44:58And if you don't
00:44:59like it for any
00:44:59reason, they'll just
00:45:00give you your money
00:45:01back.
00:45:01Plus, they offer free
00:45:02shipping in the US.
00:45:03Right now, you can
00:45:04get a free sample
00:45:04pack of Element's
00:45:05most popular flavors
00:45:06with your first
00:45:07purchase by going
00:45:08to the link in the
00:45:09description below
00:45:09or heading to
00:45:10drinklmnt.com
00:45:11slash modernwisdom.
00:45:12That's drinklmnt.com
00:45:14slash modernwisdom.
00:45:17Here's the breakdown
00:45:18in the system.
00:45:19In many of these
00:45:20places, Skid Row in
00:45:22LA, the housing is
00:45:24there, but I've
00:45:26done videos there
00:45:27too, and a lot
00:45:29of these people,
00:45:30they like the
00:45:30adventure of the
00:45:31streets.
00:45:31They don't want to
00:45:32go into housing and
00:45:33not be on drugs or
00:45:34play by the rules.
00:45:36So we're at this
00:45:38weird point in
00:45:39different jurisdictions
00:45:40depending where
00:45:41you're at, where
00:45:42it's like if they
00:45:45can stay on the
00:45:46streets and no one
00:45:47can remove them,
00:45:48then it just, the
00:45:48problem gets worse.
00:45:49And so that's also
00:45:53with the ACLU, freedom
00:45:57in America, right?
00:45:58I'm free to choose
00:45:58how I want to live
00:45:59my life and how I
00:46:00want to be.
00:46:01And the law, when
00:46:04it's written up
00:46:05differently in
00:46:06different places or
00:46:07not enforced, doesn't
00:46:09allow for the system
00:46:12to really remedy the
00:46:13problem.
00:46:15Is fentanyl the
00:46:16biggest drug problem
00:46:17in America in your
00:46:17experience?
00:46:18Yes.
00:46:20Trank's pretty ugly
00:46:20too, but I'd say
00:46:21fentanyl and meth
00:46:22are the worst.
00:46:23But Trank, if the
00:46:25distribution can get
00:46:26there, will maybe be
00:46:27as bad or worse?
00:46:28Trank is awful
00:46:29because they'll get
00:46:30wounds.
00:46:32I was in Kensington,
00:46:33some guy was on
00:46:34Trank, he had wounds
00:46:34and there were just
00:46:35like, there were
00:46:36like flies festering
00:46:37on the wounds.
00:46:38People kind of
00:46:38decomposing while
00:46:40they're alive.
00:46:41Decomposing, yeah.
00:46:42So that's what I
00:46:43mean while it's
00:46:45poorer in India, for
00:46:46sure it's poorer in
00:46:47Pakistan.
00:46:48Like, we have
00:46:49resources here.
00:46:50But it's just the
00:46:51lack of humanity.
00:46:52Now, there are
00:46:53people like Buddy
00:46:54trying to help, but
00:46:56it's this hiccup
00:46:56where nobody can
00:46:57really solve the
00:46:59problem.
00:47:00Then there's harm
00:47:01reduction, which is
00:47:02bring needles out
00:47:03because the theory
00:47:05behind that is,
00:47:06give someone a
00:47:07fresh needle, they're
00:47:08not reusing and
00:47:09spreading disease.
00:47:12And I'd say on
00:47:14the argument for
00:47:15harm reduction from
00:47:16the people, it's
00:47:17really impossible to
00:47:17get in with them.
00:47:18I've tried.
00:47:20The argument is,
00:47:21hey, if we have
00:47:21someone coming into
00:47:22our facility using
00:47:23clean needles, then
00:47:24maybe we can get
00:47:25them into rehab.
00:47:26Maybe we can sell
00:47:27the rehab on
00:47:28them.
00:47:29But there is a
00:47:30homeless industrial
00:47:30complex in the
00:47:31country.
00:47:32There are a lot of
00:47:33people making a lot
00:47:33of money.
00:47:34Who's making
00:47:35money off homeless
00:47:35people?
00:47:36Okay, so there's
00:47:38a lot of housing
00:47:39involved with building
00:47:40out housing.
00:47:40How is the
00:47:41housing involved in
00:47:42homeless people?
00:47:43Yeah, isn't it
00:47:43wild?
00:47:44What do you mean?
00:47:45They're building in
00:47:46LA on Skid Row.
00:47:48Is this the
00:47:48fucking Bass Pro
00:47:49Shop selling
00:47:50tents?
00:47:50Like, what is
00:47:51this?
00:47:52They give out
00:47:53tents.
00:47:53There's some
00:47:54grift.
00:47:54Okay.
00:47:55Okay, there'll be
00:47:56money to give out
00:47:56tents.
00:47:57But there is
00:47:58housing that is
00:48:00very expensive
00:48:00housing in Los
00:48:01Angeles built for
00:48:03homeless people.
00:48:04Okay.
00:48:05It's a little bit
00:48:06of an oxymoron,
00:48:06but go on.
00:48:07It is, yeah.
00:48:08So there's that
00:48:09grift.
00:48:09There's a lot of
00:48:10NGOs that get
00:48:11money from
00:48:12different
00:48:13organizations,
00:48:14from the state,
00:48:15from the feds,
00:48:15to sort of
00:48:16remedy the
00:48:17problem, and the
00:48:18problem's not
00:48:18necessarily being
00:48:19remedied.
00:48:22I mean, I saw
00:48:23living in San
00:48:23Francisco.
00:48:24The tenderloin has
00:48:25always been bad.
00:48:27Have you ever
00:48:27been there?
00:48:28Oh.
00:48:29I'm not selling you
00:48:30on America, Chris,
00:48:31am I?
00:48:32We're going on
00:48:33how my channel's
00:48:34not all dark, and
00:48:34I just keep going
00:48:35into the drugstore.
00:48:36That's okay.
00:48:37That's okay.
00:48:38I mean, dude, I've
00:48:39walked through SF.
00:48:41When did we do
00:48:41Naval?
00:48:43Last March, and
00:48:45that was the first
00:48:46time.
00:48:46I'd been to SF for
00:48:47Michaela Peterson's
00:48:48wedding, and then I
00:48:50hadn't seen the city
00:48:51at all, and then I
00:48:52went to go and do the
00:48:53Naval episode, and we
00:48:54were walking through
00:48:54the financial district.
00:48:56There's this huge
00:48:56fuck-off equinox,
00:48:57equinox, and it's an
00:49:00old bank.
00:49:01You've got these crazy
00:49:02steps up to the front
00:49:03of it.
00:49:03We wanted to get a
00:49:04training session in
00:49:05before we were going
00:49:06to go and film, and
00:49:08it was closed on a
00:49:10fucking Saturday.
00:49:11It is so driven.
00:49:14The Cosmopolis in
00:49:15the middle of SF is
00:49:16so driven by this
00:49:18group of people that
00:49:20do the nine-to-five
00:49:21or the nine-to-nine
00:49:23or whatever, that it's
00:49:25closed on a weekend.
00:49:26And we thought, oh,
00:49:27there's another one
00:49:28two miles away.
00:49:30I'm going to get a
00:49:30walk-in.
00:49:31I want to walk.
00:49:31I want to see the
00:49:32city.
00:49:32And as you walk
00:49:34from one equinox to
00:49:36another, you just very
00:49:38quickly see the
00:49:40financial district fall
00:49:41away and the human
00:49:43feces begin.
00:49:45And it's so, to me,
00:49:48it's how stark it is.
00:49:50And this seems to be
00:49:50one of the sort of
00:49:51through lines.
00:49:52I know you did this
00:49:53thing in the Hamptons,
00:49:54which I thought was
00:49:55fucking fascinating.
00:49:57It's not just across
00:49:59the country how big the
00:50:00inequality can be.
00:50:01It's within very small
00:50:03spaces.
00:50:04It's when you walk
00:50:05three blocks difference
00:50:06and it feels like you're
00:50:08in a different city.
00:50:10Yeah.
00:50:11To be fair, San
00:50:12Francisco has gotten
00:50:13better.
00:50:14We left in 21, my
00:50:15wife and I.
00:50:16It's gotten better since
00:50:17there.
00:50:18New mayor, new DA.
00:50:20It's cleaned up a bit.
00:50:22Things are always
00:50:22changing.
00:50:23But yeah, to me, it's
00:50:25unacceptable.
00:50:26And that's why I try to
00:50:27highlight these
00:50:28socioeconomic differences
00:50:29too, like what you're
00:50:30saying.
00:50:31Not to do the tragedy
00:50:32porn thing, but to say,
00:50:33hey, this is what we can
00:50:34fix.
00:50:34Yeah.
00:50:35And it's not necessarily
00:50:35a solution I'm offering.
00:50:37It's just showing.
00:50:40The book, I don't, I
00:50:42don't, can I, can I talk
00:50:43about the book?
00:50:44Dude, where should people
00:50:45go to read this amazing
00:50:46fucking memoir that you
00:50:48put together?
00:50:48Okay, your fellow
00:50:49Americans, and I'm going
00:50:51to put you in that
00:50:51basket, Chris.
00:50:52Is that cool?
00:50:53Perfectly.
00:50:54I'll cut, because you've
00:50:55embraced the country, the
00:50:56country's embraced you.
00:50:57Private Camaro.
00:50:58You do?
00:50:58Yeah.
00:50:59Oh, nice.
00:51:0080s?
00:51:00Oh, no, new one.
00:51:02Scumbag.
00:51:02Sorry.
00:51:03Okay.
00:51:03No, scumbag is 80s.
00:51:05Oh, okay.
00:51:06Fair enough.
00:51:06Doing burnouts.
00:51:07I'm elevated hick, I
00:51:09think.
00:51:09Okay, so it's a lot of
00:51:12the content from the
00:51:13channel, a lot of the
00:51:14backstory.
00:51:15So much happens when
00:51:16the power button's
00:51:17off.
00:51:18In Amish country,
00:51:21shooting a series, like
00:51:22everything, it's
00:51:23nuanced, it's complicated.
00:51:26The Amish have the
00:51:26Schwartzentrumers, which
00:51:28are the most
00:51:29conservative.
00:51:29You'd think of the
00:51:30Schwartzentrumers when
00:51:31you think of Amish.
00:51:32No phone, no
00:51:33electricity.
00:51:34It has the beachy.
00:51:36Those would be the
00:51:36most liberal.
00:51:38They drive around.
00:51:39Okay?
00:51:40What makes them
00:51:40Amish?
00:51:43Yeah, you don't
00:51:44really get a plaque or
00:51:45anything.
00:51:46I guess you just say,
00:51:47I'm Amish, and you
00:51:48play the game, as
00:51:49in, have you seen how
00:51:50they cut their beards?
00:51:52Yes.
00:51:52Right?
00:51:53Yes.
00:51:53Like, you wouldn't be
00:51:54able to be Amish
00:51:55looking like you're
00:51:56looking, or me like
00:51:57I'm looking.
00:51:57Okay.
00:51:58Be unacceptable.
00:51:59Yep.
00:51:59But you're part of
00:52:01the church, you're part
00:52:02of the Amish church, you
00:52:03live by their ways, and-
00:52:05But you also have
00:52:06some technology.
00:52:07Depending on the
00:52:08type of Amish.
00:52:09Yep.
00:52:09Yep.
00:52:09Okay, so in the
00:52:10book, stuff like, I'm
00:52:14in an Airbnb in the
00:52:15countryside, Amish country,
00:52:16cats are meowing
00:52:17outside, I don't know
00:52:18why there are cats
00:52:19outside, but I go out
00:52:20to feed them, door
00:52:22closes behind, I'm in
00:52:25my underwear, sun's
00:52:26coming up, go to open
00:52:28the door, oh shoot, my
00:52:30phone's inside, code is
00:52:32on my phone, I gotta
00:52:34shoot a video, I hear
00:52:35the hooves coming down
00:52:37the road, the steel
00:52:38wheels of the
00:52:39carriages, the Amish
00:52:40are coming, the Amish
00:52:41are coming.
00:52:42and I'm in my
00:52:43underwear, like one of
00:52:44those dudes with a
00:52:45metallic blanket, you
00:52:46know, I'm reflecting
00:52:47pasty white to the
00:52:48world.
00:52:49And so there are two
00:52:50questions in my head, I
00:52:52mean, there's two ways
00:52:54to go about this.
00:52:56I walk to the most
00:52:57conservative Amish
00:52:59people's house, the
00:53:00Schwarzen Troopers, in
00:53:01my underwear, bald,
00:53:04naked, pretty much, you
00:53:06know, pass their kids
00:53:07and say, hey, can you
00:53:09help me get into this
00:53:09house, or I gotta break
00:53:11through the window of
00:53:14the house where I'm
00:53:14staying, and so I throw
00:53:16a big rock through the
00:53:17window.
00:53:18Why?
00:53:19You would too.
00:53:20Why?
00:53:20Are they scary?
00:53:22Just think, I mean,
00:53:24you're a ripped, good
00:53:25looking guy, but even
00:53:27you, showing up to an
00:53:28Amish home, some of the
00:53:30most conservative
00:53:31people.
00:53:32You think you'd get
00:53:32shot?
00:53:33What would happen?
00:53:33No, they wouldn't
00:53:34shoot you, it would
00:53:35just go wrong, I
00:53:36think.
00:53:37I don't think it
00:53:37would go well.
00:53:38Okay.
00:53:38It'd be so out
00:53:39there.
00:53:40I imagine news doesn't
00:53:40travel that fast in the
00:53:41Amish world, though.
00:53:42It does.
00:53:43Okay.
00:53:43They're like aspen
00:53:44trees, they're all
00:53:45connected.
00:53:45Okay.
00:53:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:53:46Seriously.
00:53:47They know what's
00:53:48going on.
00:53:49They're more
00:53:50connected than we
00:53:50are.
00:53:51Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:53:52Faster than the
00:53:52internet.
00:53:54So, call the people,
00:53:56obviously, hey, sorry, I
00:53:57broke your window, I'll
00:53:58replace it, and
00:53:58whatnot.
00:53:59There's a lot of that
00:54:00stuff behind the
00:54:01scenes of video
00:54:02making, which, when
00:54:04the cameras are off, the
00:54:05thoughts that come
00:54:06through, what I've
00:54:06learned on the
00:54:07journey, and also,
00:54:08how I started into
00:54:10this after high
00:54:10school, taking a road
00:54:11trip across the
00:54:12country, and a lot of
00:54:14historical context in
00:54:15there, and just an
00:54:16overall pro, got it,
00:54:19we're in difficult
00:54:21times, a lot of doom
00:54:23and gloom.
00:54:24You can get that all
00:54:24day long on the
00:54:25internet, or turn on
00:54:26the TV.
00:54:27Here's a space to go,
00:54:30that being the book, or
00:54:31the audio book.
00:54:32You can open up 10
00:54:34separate chapters, easy
00:54:36to read, they're all
00:54:37separate on their own, and
00:54:39smile about America, and
00:54:41learn something, and
00:54:42connect with your
00:54:43fellow Americans.
00:54:44So, the publisher
00:54:45reached out, because they
00:54:47saw the channel, and
00:54:48they're like, do you
00:54:48want to do something off
00:54:50your channel?
00:54:52They're thinking to
00:54:53zag while everyone is
00:54:54zigging right now.
00:54:55There's a lot of
00:54:55heaviness, a lot of doom
00:54:57and gloom in the
00:54:57country.
00:54:58They're just thinking
00:54:59the Western world
00:54:59overall, maybe all the
00:55:01world, I don't know.
00:55:03They're trying to think
00:55:04front lines, hey, how
00:55:05can we go the opposite
00:55:06direction here?
00:55:07And that's what my
00:55:08book is.
00:55:09Nice, wholesome.
00:55:10Yeah, I'd like to
00:55:11think so.
00:55:12I get in a little
00:55:12heaviness, but not too
00:55:13bad.
00:55:14It's mostly uplifting,
00:55:15positive.
00:55:16Give me some more
00:55:16stories about the
00:55:17Amish.
00:55:20Okay, here's one for
00:55:21you.
00:55:22You'll like this, being
00:55:23English.
00:55:25I'm English, too, in
00:55:26the Amish world.
00:55:28Everyone here is
00:55:29English.
00:55:30Anyone that's not
00:55:31Amish is English?
00:55:32100%.
00:55:33Including the
00:55:33Japanese?
00:55:34Black, Japanese,
00:55:35female, you're
00:55:36English.
00:55:37Oh, that's
00:55:37fantastic.
00:55:38You're not them,
00:55:38you're English.
00:55:39Dude, and they
00:55:40said that the
00:55:40Imperial colony had
00:55:41died.
00:55:42No, we're still
00:55:43going strong in the
00:55:44Amish.
00:55:45Go fuck yourself.
00:55:45So you're
00:55:46English, I'm
00:55:47English.
00:55:47Yes, and
00:55:48Italian,
00:55:49apparently.
00:55:50Old order
00:55:50Amish can't
00:55:52drive, but they're
00:55:53out in the
00:55:54countryside.
00:55:54They need rides
00:55:55really bad.
00:55:57Okay, so I
00:55:58meet this guy, his
00:55:59name's Marcus.
00:56:00I'm like, Marcus, I'm
00:56:02making videos, and
00:56:03he's like, hey, I
00:56:05can bring you into
00:56:06my buddies, my old
00:56:08geezer buddies, playing
00:56:09shuffleboard in an
00:56:10Amish barn, out in
00:56:12the sticks.
00:56:13I'm like, man, that's
00:56:14going to be cool.
00:56:16I got to drive an
00:56:17hour to Marcus.
00:56:18It's another 45
00:56:19minutes to his
00:56:19buddies.
00:56:20I go to Marcus'
00:56:21place, pick him
00:56:22up.
00:56:22Oh, howdy, Peter.
00:56:23How you doing?
00:56:24Hang on, so he's
00:56:24okay to get in a
00:56:26car, but not to
00:56:27drive a car.
00:56:28He can't drive.
00:56:28He needs English to
00:56:30drive.
00:56:31English, you have to
00:56:32drive.
00:56:32So this is like
00:56:33Shabbat a little
00:56:34bit for Jewish
00:56:35people.
00:56:35It's like, we
00:56:36can't turn on or
00:56:37off the light, but
00:56:38if we've got
00:56:38somebody else that
00:56:39can turn the
00:56:39light on or
00:56:39off.
00:56:40I did a video on
00:56:41that too.
00:56:42I got in
00:56:42Shabbat.
00:56:43But okay, so
00:56:44pick Marcus up.
00:56:46About halfway
00:56:47through the drive, I'm
00:56:48thinking, great time
00:56:49to start the
00:56:49video.
00:56:50Rolling Hills,
00:56:50Holmes County,
00:56:51Ohio, beautiful.
00:56:52Marcus is a
00:56:53character.
00:56:54I bring out the
00:56:55camera.
00:56:55I'm like, he's
00:56:56like, what are you
00:56:56doing?
00:56:57I'm like, I'm just
00:56:58going to start the
00:56:58video.
00:56:58He's like, I
00:57:00don't know.
00:57:02Let's not do that
00:57:02right now.
00:57:04So I'm reading the
00:57:04room.
00:57:04Okay, cool.
00:57:06Go to the event
00:57:06with the shuffle
00:57:07board.
00:57:09Feeling it out
00:57:09with his guys,
00:57:10characters, great
00:57:11scene, a lot of
00:57:12yelling.
00:57:12They're speaking
00:57:13Pennsylvania and
00:57:14Dutch.
00:57:15What the fuck is
00:57:16that?
00:57:16Which is their
00:57:17language.
00:57:18It's like a
00:57:19form of German.
00:57:20Yeah, that's
00:57:21their native
00:57:22language.
00:57:23They call it
00:57:24Dutch, not to do
00:57:25with the
00:57:25Netherlands, but
00:57:26like Deutsch.
00:57:28Where did that
00:57:29come from?
00:57:29Came from the
00:57:30motherland, from
00:57:31Europe.
00:57:31Right.
00:57:32They came to
00:57:33the U.S.
00:57:34to flee
00:57:35religious
00:57:35persecution.
00:57:37Persecution.
00:57:39And William Penn
00:57:40in Pennsylvania
00:57:41said, hey, come
00:57:41on over.
00:57:42You guys are
00:57:42great with the
00:57:43land.
00:57:43You're great
00:57:43with farming.
00:57:44And they
00:57:45could live to
00:57:45their own
00:57:46tune in
00:57:46America.
00:57:47There are a
00:57:48lot of
00:57:48carve-outs for
00:57:49them.
00:57:50And that's a
00:57:51part of my
00:57:51book.
00:57:52Neither here nor
00:57:53there.
00:57:54People in
00:57:54America, Chicanos,
00:57:55Amish, Siberian,
00:57:56Yupik, who are
00:57:57American, but
00:57:58living in their
00:57:59own universes.
00:58:00Okay, so get
00:58:02the event.
00:58:03I'm not feeling
00:58:04the vibe.
00:58:04I got to feel
00:58:05the vibe.
00:58:06And ends up I
00:58:07don't shoot a
00:58:08video.
00:58:09And then I
00:58:10try.
00:58:10I'm a little bit
00:58:11confused, but
00:58:12whatever.
00:58:12I'm just going
00:58:13with it.
00:58:13Drive Marcus home,
00:58:1445 minutes.
00:58:15Drive back to
00:58:16my place an
00:58:16hour.
00:58:17I tell an
00:58:17Amish guy a
00:58:18couple days
00:58:18later, he's
00:58:19like, oh,
00:58:19yeah, he
00:58:20totally played
00:58:21you.
00:58:22The Amish
00:58:23bum rides
00:58:23from English.
00:58:25And he just
00:58:26roped you in.
00:58:27He wasn't going
00:58:28to do a video.
00:58:28He finessed you.
00:58:29He was doing
00:58:29no video with
00:58:30you.
00:58:32And I laughed.
00:58:33I thought it
00:58:33was great.
00:58:34You thought that
00:58:34it was on you,
00:58:35that you hadn't
00:58:36maybe made
00:58:37everyone feel as
00:58:37comfortable as
00:58:38you should have
00:58:38done, but the
00:58:39video was never
00:58:39on the table.
00:58:40It was never
00:58:41there.
00:58:43You see, you
00:58:44look at the
00:58:44Amish and you
00:58:45say that's
00:58:45primitive technology,
00:58:46but you just
00:58:47got completely
00:58:48schmoozed by
00:58:49him.
00:58:49Schmoozed.
00:58:49Yeah.
00:58:50And before the
00:58:51pandemic, I did
00:58:52these videos, like
00:58:54right around the
00:58:54beginning of the
00:58:55pandemic.
00:58:56Oh, no, in the
00:58:57beginning, it was
00:58:57like, everyone was
00:58:58like, oh, the
00:58:59Amish left
00:59:00behind.
00:59:02They're not
00:59:03keeping up.
00:59:04That would suck
00:59:04to be them.
00:59:05Then the pandemic
00:59:06happens.
00:59:06Everyone's like,
00:59:07I want some of
00:59:08that.
00:59:09They're making
00:59:09their own food,
00:59:10hanging out
00:59:11together in the
00:59:11countryside.
00:59:12Not worried
00:59:13about a thing.
00:59:15So, the book
00:59:16gets into those
00:59:17stories, just
00:59:17like the videos.
00:59:18What about the
00:59:19intense Jewish
00:59:20communities that
00:59:21you've been to
00:59:21see?
00:59:22Yeah, the
00:59:22Hasidics.
00:59:23And again,
00:59:24they're different
00:59:24sects.
00:59:25You have the
00:59:25Satmars would
00:59:26be the most
00:59:27conservative.
00:59:28And then you
00:59:28have the
00:59:29Labavich, which
00:59:30I did a Shabbat
00:59:31dinner with.
00:59:32We had to get
00:59:32approval from
00:59:34the rabbis for
00:59:36me to get in
00:59:36there and shoot
00:59:37that video.
00:59:39The wife
00:59:39shops at
00:59:40Gucci.
00:59:41So, you
00:59:43have Gucci
00:59:43too, so
00:59:44conservative, it's
00:59:46like the most
00:59:46Spartan living.
00:59:47Homespun.
00:59:49Yeah, in
00:59:49Brooklyn.
00:59:52In like the
00:59:53center of
00:59:54urban America.
00:59:56So, that's
00:59:56fascinating.
00:59:58Look, I think
00:59:59Shabbat's cool.
01:00:00I think
01:00:01Shabbat's cool.
01:00:02I totally
01:00:02respect that.
01:00:03I think it's
01:00:04awesome.
01:00:05We did a
01:00:05guy that does
01:00:07the ads for
01:00:08my show,
01:00:08Sky, one of
01:00:09my best
01:00:09friends, had
01:00:10his bachelor
01:00:12party a
01:00:13couple of
01:00:13years ago.
01:00:14He decided
01:00:14to do it
01:00:15in Houston.
01:00:17He likes
01:00:18Asian food,
01:00:21Asian culture,
01:00:22and that
01:00:23was it for
01:00:24the theme
01:00:25for the
01:00:25weekend.
01:00:26We did
01:00:27Shabbat on
01:00:28the Friday
01:00:29evening.
01:00:30I want
01:00:30everyone to
01:00:31kind of
01:00:31be here
01:00:31in the
01:00:32moment.
01:00:32I want
01:00:32everyone
01:00:33phones away.
01:00:34We'll do
01:00:34food.
01:00:36So, I'm
01:00:36like, I've
01:00:36never done
01:00:37this before.
01:00:39I guess
01:00:39it's secular
01:00:40Shabbat, you
01:00:40could call it.
01:00:41It's basically
01:00:42just don't use
01:00:42your fucking
01:00:43phone for
01:00:43Friday evening
01:00:44and we'll
01:00:44eat some
01:00:44food.
01:00:45Food
01:00:46arrives and
01:00:47he got
01:00:47two pounds
01:00:48of crawfish.
01:00:49I'm like,
01:00:50that definitely
01:00:51doesn't fucking
01:00:52work.
01:00:53Also,
01:00:54there's 25
01:00:54of us and
01:00:55you got two
01:00:56pounds of
01:00:56crawfish.
01:00:57That's like
01:00:57100 grams
01:00:59of edible
01:00:59food.
01:01:00So,
01:01:01immediately I
01:01:01broke Shabbat,
01:01:02got my phone
01:01:02out and
01:01:02ordered pizza
01:01:03for everybody.
01:01:04I don't give
01:01:05a fuck about
01:01:05this thing.
01:01:07But we did
01:01:08that and we
01:01:09did a
01:01:09Jeffersonian
01:01:10dinner where
01:01:12you have a
01:01:13single question
01:01:13and you're
01:01:14sort of
01:01:14circling the
01:01:15room and I
01:01:16can see the
01:01:16allure of
01:01:17it.
01:01:17I really
01:01:17can.
01:01:18You know,
01:01:18an equivalent
01:01:18of a lot of
01:01:20people are
01:01:20doing a
01:01:20digital
01:01:20Sabbath now
01:01:21on a
01:01:22Sunday where
01:01:23okay,
01:01:23I'm just
01:01:23no screens
01:01:24for nine
01:01:25till nine
01:01:25on a
01:01:25Sunday.
01:01:27After
01:01:27coming back
01:01:28from a
01:01:28seven-day
01:01:29silent
01:01:29meditation
01:01:30retreat
01:01:30with no
01:01:30screens,
01:01:31having little
01:01:32doses of that
01:01:34I think make
01:01:35complete sense.
01:01:36So, you
01:01:36can do,
01:01:38regardless of
01:01:39whether you're
01:01:39religious or
01:01:39not or a
01:01:40part of the
01:01:40culture or
01:01:41not, I
01:01:41think that
01:01:41there's a
01:01:42lot of
01:01:43cultural
01:01:44technology,
01:01:45social technology
01:01:45that you can
01:01:46take and
01:01:47bring into
01:01:47your own
01:01:48life.
01:01:48why wouldn't
01:01:50you want
01:01:51to,
01:01:51yeah, maybe
01:01:52the light
01:01:52switch thing
01:01:53might be a
01:01:54little bit
01:01:54much, but
01:01:55okay, a
01:01:56period of
01:01:56the week
01:01:56where you
01:01:57don't think
01:01:57about work,
01:01:58a period of
01:01:59the week
01:01:59where you're
01:02:00just being
01:02:00present, a
01:02:01period of the
01:02:01week where
01:02:01you're away
01:02:02from screens,
01:02:03like, who
01:02:05thinks that
01:02:05that's a
01:02:05bad idea?
01:02:06Right.
01:02:07I'd like to
01:02:08get there.
01:02:10The
01:02:11Appalachia
01:02:11thing, just
01:02:12going back to
01:02:12that, I was
01:02:13watching a
01:02:14video of you
01:02:15speaking to
01:02:16some kid
01:02:16who had
01:02:17the most
01:02:17insane
01:02:18history
01:02:18knowledge.
01:02:19Yeah, right.
01:02:20Who was
01:02:21that kid?
01:02:21Because he
01:02:21was giving
01:02:22you an
01:02:23entire history
01:02:24lecture about
01:02:25the difference
01:02:25between the
01:02:26ancient Greeks
01:02:27and the
01:02:27ancient Romans
01:02:27and how he
01:02:28had beef
01:02:29with the
01:02:30ancient Romans
01:02:31because of
01:02:32this slaughter
01:02:33that they'd
01:02:34done in
01:02:34like 404
01:02:35A.D.
01:02:36I'm like,
01:02:36yo, if you're
01:02:37holding on to
01:02:38beef from
01:02:39the fucking
01:02:40like third
01:02:41century,
01:02:42that's very
01:02:44impressive.
01:02:45And he
01:02:46was like
01:02:4616 years
01:02:47old.
01:02:49Yeah, I
01:02:49that was, he
01:02:50was on the
01:02:50side of the
01:02:51road.
01:02:52I saw these
01:02:52guys fishing
01:02:53and that
01:02:55video is
01:02:56actually the
01:02:57best performing
01:02:58video on my
01:02:59channel.
01:03:00And I
01:03:00almost.
01:03:0034 million
01:03:01views is no
01:03:02joke.
01:03:02Yeah, and I
01:03:03almost, I
01:03:03almost didn't
01:03:04do it.
01:03:04I was like
01:03:04struggling to
01:03:05get it going.
01:03:06But that's
01:03:07one of those
01:03:07videos where I'm
01:03:08like, okay, I
01:03:08got a long
01:03:09road trip.
01:03:10Who I meet
01:03:11up with along
01:03:11the way and
01:03:12what happens
01:03:12with them
01:03:13determines if
01:03:14it's a good
01:03:14video or
01:03:15not.
01:03:16And you
01:03:17have to put
01:03:17your extroverted
01:03:18feeling out,
01:03:20sensing.
01:03:20So I see
01:03:21these kids
01:03:21off the
01:03:21side of
01:03:22the road,
01:03:22turn over,
01:03:23we get into
01:03:23a conversation
01:03:24and then he
01:03:25drops that.
01:03:26And he
01:03:26starts singing
01:03:26for me too.
01:03:28And his main
01:03:29point was he
01:03:30wanted to show
01:03:31the country that
01:03:33we're all not
01:03:34just drugs and
01:03:36alcoholics and
01:03:38coal miners.
01:03:39That we have,
01:03:40we have something
01:03:41more in us.
01:03:42sophistication as
01:03:43well.
01:03:43Yeah.
01:03:43And you
01:03:43realize that
01:03:44labels are
01:03:46simple and
01:03:47stereotyping,
01:03:48they exist for
01:03:49a reason,
01:03:50but you
01:03:51can't judge.
01:03:52I mean,
01:03:52if this work
01:03:54has taught me
01:03:54one thing is to
01:03:55judge less,
01:03:56like that guy
01:03:58was a gem.
01:04:00He was just
01:04:01dropping it.
01:04:02I couldn't keep
01:04:02up with him.
01:04:03I'm like,
01:04:03yeah, that sounds
01:04:04good because I
01:04:04didn't have that
01:04:06historical knowledge.
01:04:07Jared, you
01:04:08ever considered
01:04:09that you might
01:04:09have a drinking
01:04:09problem?
01:04:11I don't consider
01:04:11a lot, Chris.
01:04:12Well, you
01:04:13drank an entire
01:04:14case of Athletic
01:04:15Brewing Coke
01:04:16last night.
01:04:16But they're
01:04:17non-alcoholic.
01:04:19And that's
01:04:19not a problem?
01:04:21Sorry, man.
01:04:21I just kept
01:04:22chugging away
01:04:22for the regret
01:04:23to creep in.
01:04:24Never happened.
01:04:26See, most
01:04:27people, like
01:04:28Jared, don't
01:04:29want to change
01:04:29what they drink.
01:04:30They just don't
01:04:31want the next
01:04:31day to be a
01:04:32complete write-off.
01:04:33And that is
01:04:33why I'm such a
01:04:34huge fan of
01:04:35Athletic Brewing
01:04:35Coke.

01:05:07Bottoms up.
01:05:14What was
01:05:14that story
01:05:15in the
01:05:16Appalachian
01:05:16company town
01:05:18where some
01:05:18widow lady
01:05:20had to,
01:05:23had seven
01:05:23days to
01:05:24remarry or
01:05:24leave or
01:05:25something?
01:05:25Yeah.
01:05:27Well,
01:05:28in company
01:05:28towns,
01:05:29not that
01:05:30long ago,
01:05:31I don't know
01:05:31if it was
01:05:31like this
01:05:32in the UK,
01:05:32but they
01:05:33were paid
01:05:33in Scrip.
01:05:34Scrip was
01:05:35company money.
01:05:37Like a special
01:05:37currency that
01:05:38could only be
01:05:39used in
01:05:40company-run
01:05:41stores?
01:05:42Exactly.
01:05:43Okay.
01:05:43And for
01:05:44your housing
01:05:45and everything.
01:05:45So a horrendous
01:05:46way to control
01:05:47the people
01:05:47that are working.
01:05:48Yeah.
01:05:48You're not
01:05:48leaving.
01:05:50Or if you want
01:05:51to leave,
01:05:51your money's
01:05:51useless.
01:05:53So if a wife
01:05:54passed,
01:05:56or sorry,
01:05:57a husband passed
01:05:58in the mines,
01:05:59the wife had to
01:06:00bounce out of town
01:06:01or get her kids
01:06:02in the mines
01:06:02immediately.
01:06:05or else
01:06:05you're losing
01:06:06everything
01:06:06because the
01:06:08company owned
01:06:08all the real
01:06:08estate and
01:06:09they need
01:06:10workers in
01:06:10that real
01:06:10estate.
01:06:11It's getting
01:06:11perilously close
01:06:13to a type
01:06:13of slavery.
01:06:14Yeah.
01:06:15Like indentured
01:06:16servitude.
01:06:17Thousands
01:06:18of these
01:06:19places.
01:06:20Do you know
01:06:20we still have
01:06:21company towns
01:06:22in America?
01:06:23That use
01:06:23the currency
01:06:24thing?
01:06:24Not the
01:06:25currency,
01:06:25but almost
01:06:26everything else.
01:06:27Okay.
01:06:27What is a
01:06:28company town?
01:06:29Company town,
01:06:30company owns
01:06:31the real
01:06:31estate.
01:06:32It provides
01:06:32all the
01:06:32employment.
01:06:34Everything
01:06:35revolves around
01:06:35the company.
01:06:37So,
01:06:38again,
01:06:40one of those
01:06:41nights I'm
01:06:41looking at
01:06:41Google,
01:06:42Baghdad,
01:06:44Arizona.
01:06:45What?
01:06:46Baghdad,
01:06:47Arizona.
01:06:47Who would
01:06:47have thought?
01:06:48I looked
01:06:49into it.
01:06:49What's this
01:06:50town?
01:06:51Freeport
01:06:51McMorrin owns
01:06:53it.
01:06:54Copper
01:06:54mining.
01:06:55They own
01:06:56all the
01:06:56real estate
01:06:56there.
01:06:57Everyone
01:06:58there works
01:06:58in the
01:06:59mines or
01:07:00still?
01:07:01Still.
01:07:02Or some
01:07:04ancillary
01:07:04business
01:07:05connected
01:07:06to the
01:07:06mines.
01:07:08And I
01:07:08checked it
01:07:09out.
01:07:09And I'm
01:07:09thinking,
01:07:10old company
01:07:10town,
01:07:12what's it
01:07:12like out
01:07:13there?
01:07:13People are
01:07:14all tied
01:07:14into this
01:07:15thing.
01:07:15Well,
01:07:15I get
01:07:16out there.
01:07:16The average
01:07:17wage was
01:07:19above the
01:07:19average in
01:07:20America.
01:07:20It was
01:07:2190 grand,
01:07:22I believe.
01:07:24Rent,
01:07:25350 bucks.
01:07:26Three bedroom,
01:07:27two bath.
01:07:28This is
01:07:29looking up.
01:07:29Everything's
01:07:30good at the
01:07:30moment.
01:07:30summer
01:07:31workout
01:07:32facility,
01:07:32pool,
01:07:33daycare
01:07:34for kids.
01:07:36School's
01:07:36great.
01:07:38No crime.
01:07:38Why?
01:07:39If you
01:07:39commit crime
01:07:40in a
01:07:40company
01:07:40time,
01:07:41you're
01:07:41out.
01:07:41Company's
01:07:42booting
01:07:42you.
01:07:44And so
01:07:45it's not
01:07:46for me.
01:07:47I don't
01:07:48want to be
01:07:48in that
01:07:48mold
01:07:49necessarily,
01:07:50but I
01:07:51totally
01:07:51get it.
01:07:54In these
01:07:55times where
01:07:55inflation's
01:07:56kicking up,
01:07:57more stress
01:08:00I would
01:08:00say with
01:08:00trying to
01:08:01make the
01:08:01bills,
01:08:02childcare,
01:08:03all that.
01:08:05What
01:08:05control is
01:08:06in a
01:08:07company town
01:08:08other than
01:08:10everybody has
01:08:11to work for
01:08:12the company?
01:08:12I'm trying to
01:08:13think about
01:08:13there was
01:08:13hard power
01:08:14before with
01:08:15the currency
01:08:15thing.
01:08:17What are
01:08:18some of the
01:08:19other ways
01:08:19that pressure
01:08:21is applied
01:08:21to the people
01:08:22that are
01:08:22working?
01:08:23Yeah.
01:08:24You get
01:08:24fired,
01:08:25you're out
01:08:25obviously.
01:08:26If you're
01:08:27old,
01:08:27once you
01:08:28retire,
01:08:28you're
01:08:29out of
01:08:29town.
01:08:31Yeah.
01:08:32They're not
01:08:33going to
01:08:33save that
01:08:34space for
01:08:35retiree.
01:08:36For somebody
01:08:36that isn't
01:08:37being economically
01:08:38contributive to
01:08:39this project.
01:08:41Exactly.
01:08:41I suppose
01:08:42that's
01:08:42interesting
01:08:42when you
01:08:43think about
01:08:43the fact
01:08:43that being
01:08:45able to
01:08:45own your
01:08:46own home
01:08:46now or
01:08:48rent an
01:08:49apartment,
01:08:50as long as
01:08:50you can
01:08:50make payments,
01:08:51you don't
01:08:51have to
01:08:51have any
01:08:52allegiance
01:08:53to
01:08:54anyone.
01:08:55It doesn't
01:08:56matter
01:08:56whether you
01:08:56move from
01:08:57Google to
01:08:58Procter &
01:08:59Gamble or
01:08:59from Starbucks
01:09:00to fucking
01:09:01Prader-Manger,
01:09:02all of that's
01:09:03fine.
01:09:04The house is
01:09:05independent.
01:09:06But for
01:09:06almost all of
01:09:07human history,
01:09:08if you were
01:09:09in some
01:09:09serfdom
01:09:10thing,
01:09:12if you had
01:09:12to have
01:09:13fealty to
01:09:14wherever the
01:09:15local baron in
01:09:16the UK,
01:09:17medieval times,
01:09:19if you had
01:09:20lords,
01:09:21if you were
01:09:21playing land
01:09:22registries and
01:09:23shit like that,
01:09:24it's kind
01:09:25of an
01:09:26economic
01:09:27engine,
01:09:28even if you
01:09:28were living
01:09:28on a farm.
01:09:29So there's
01:09:30some outhouse
01:09:30on the farm
01:09:31and you
01:09:31look after
01:09:32the pigs,
01:09:33you're the
01:09:33pig guy,
01:09:34and then you
01:09:34stop looking
01:09:35after the
01:09:35pigs.
01:09:36It's like,
01:09:36well,
01:09:36guess what?
01:09:36You're out
01:09:37of the
01:09:37house as
01:09:37well because
01:09:38your housing
01:09:40was attached
01:09:42to your
01:09:42economic
01:09:43output,
01:09:45not just
01:09:46your capacity
01:09:46to pay.
01:09:47That was all
01:09:48part of a
01:09:49single...
01:09:49I suppose
01:09:50this historically
01:09:52is not that
01:09:53strange.
01:09:54What feels
01:09:54weird is to
01:09:55now think
01:09:55about having
01:09:56your house
01:09:57and your
01:09:57social structure
01:09:58because being
01:09:58kicked out of
01:09:59the house
01:09:59is hard,
01:10:00but losing
01:10:01every friend
01:10:02you've ever
01:10:02had and
01:10:02every person
01:10:03that you've
01:10:03ever known
01:10:04in this
01:10:04probably
01:10:05incredibly
01:10:05insular
01:10:06environment.
01:10:08Hey,
01:10:0865,
01:10:09congratulations.
01:10:10Now,
01:10:10fuck off.
01:10:11None of your
01:10:11friends are
01:10:11going to be
01:10:12able to go
01:10:12with you.
01:10:13And insular
01:10:13also,
01:10:15geographically,
01:10:16these are like...
01:10:17Middle of
01:10:17nowhere.
01:10:17Middle.
01:10:18Morenci is
01:10:18another one.
01:10:19Two big
01:10:19ones in
01:10:20Arizona.
01:10:21And people
01:10:21are trying
01:10:22to get
01:10:22in.
01:10:25Because,
01:10:25look,
01:10:26the pay
01:10:27is good.
01:10:28They save
01:10:28up money
01:10:29and get
01:10:29real estate
01:10:30out.
01:10:30A lot
01:10:30of the
01:10:31ones that
01:10:31are thinking
01:10:31through it,
01:10:32they do
01:10:32their time
01:10:33and they
01:10:33buy real
01:10:33estate
01:10:34outside
01:10:34and retire
01:10:35in that
01:10:35desert
01:10:36Arizona.
01:10:38It wouldn't
01:10:38surprise me
01:10:39if people
01:10:41are innovative
01:10:42and if
01:10:43there is
01:10:44this
01:10:44understanding
01:10:46that you
01:10:46work in
01:10:47this place
01:10:47and then
01:10:48when you
01:10:49retire
01:10:49you're
01:10:49going to
01:10:49get kicked
01:10:50out,
01:10:50that will
01:10:51begin to
01:10:52be a
01:10:52pathway
01:10:53conveyor belt
01:10:54to why
01:10:55don't we
01:10:55make a
01:10:56retiree's
01:10:57town that's
01:10:58not too
01:10:58far away
01:10:59and this
01:11:00has all of
01:11:01the things
01:11:01that we
01:11:01want and
01:11:02then that
01:11:02begins to
01:11:03be the
01:11:03kind of
01:11:04tradition
01:11:06that people
01:11:07go through.
01:11:08And right
01:11:08now they're
01:11:08doing well
01:11:09because
01:11:09copper is
01:11:09doing well.
01:11:10Right.
01:11:12What about
01:11:12East LA?
01:11:13East LA is
01:11:14great.
01:11:15I love the
01:11:16Chicanos.
01:11:17They're cool.
01:11:19One of
01:11:20those,
01:11:20again,
01:11:21new country
01:11:22in my own
01:11:22country
01:11:23experiences.
01:11:24Didn't know
01:11:24anything about
01:11:25Chicanos
01:11:26really.
01:11:27Got in
01:11:27with these
01:11:28guys.
01:11:30True
01:11:30100%
01:11:32Chicanos.
01:11:33As in
01:11:34English is
01:11:36the native
01:11:36language
01:11:37with a
01:11:38Spanish
01:11:39accent.
01:11:41Why?
01:11:43It's the
01:11:43culture.
01:11:44A lot of
01:11:45them are
01:11:45bilingual.
01:11:47Spanish?
01:11:48Yeah,
01:11:49but a lot
01:11:50have been
01:11:50here generations
01:11:51and they
01:11:52grew up
01:11:52speaking
01:11:52English,
01:11:53but they
01:11:54have a
01:11:54Spanish
01:11:54accent.
01:11:55It's
01:11:55wild.
01:11:56Cool.
01:11:56Okay.
01:11:57Look,
01:11:57the car
01:11:57culture is
01:11:58awesome.
01:12:00I get it.
01:12:01The low
01:12:01riders,
01:12:02the taco.
01:12:03It's a
01:12:03culture.
01:12:04It's
01:12:04connected.
01:12:06It really
01:12:06is connected
01:12:07well.
01:12:08It's its
01:12:08own universe
01:12:09out there.
01:12:10And again,
01:12:11it's one of
01:12:11those either
01:12:12here nor
01:12:13there.
01:12:13The Chicanos
01:12:13will say,
01:12:15when we go
01:12:15to Mexico,
01:12:17they call
01:12:17us American,
01:12:18but when
01:12:19we're in
01:12:19the U.S.,
01:12:19they call
01:12:20us Mexican.
01:12:22They're in
01:12:23the uncanny
01:12:23valley of
01:12:24Mexicans
01:12:24and Americans.
01:12:25Yeah.
01:12:26Right in
01:12:26between.
01:12:27Yeah.
01:12:28Yeah.
01:12:29So I made
01:12:29a few videos
01:12:30out there
01:12:30with them,
01:12:31actually a
01:12:31chapter in
01:12:32the book
01:12:32about the
01:12:33Chicanos.
01:12:34And that's
01:12:35what's so
01:12:36rad about
01:12:37America.
01:12:37You have
01:12:38all these
01:12:38different
01:12:39existences
01:12:40coexisting.
01:12:43And my
01:12:43wife says,
01:12:44it's a
01:12:45build-your-own-bowl
01:12:46country,
01:12:48as in pick
01:12:48your protein,
01:12:49pick your
01:12:50vegetables,
01:12:51pick your
01:12:51dressing.
01:12:52So pick
01:12:52your culture,
01:12:54your addiction,
01:12:55fentanyl or
01:12:55meth.
01:12:56Pick your
01:12:57geography.
01:12:59What do you
01:12:59want?
01:12:59Mountains?
01:12:59You want
01:13:00oceans?
01:13:01You want
01:13:02your culture?
01:13:02You want
01:13:03your politics
01:13:03even?
01:13:04Choose your
01:13:05own adventure.
01:13:06It's fucking
01:13:06cool.
01:13:08For all that
01:13:09there's problems
01:13:09in this place,
01:13:10and it's the
01:13:11misogynistic,
01:13:12capitalistic
01:13:13hellscape that's
01:13:14trying to
01:13:14bigotedly keep
01:13:15everybody down,
01:13:15I understand.
01:13:16But when I
01:13:18flew back from
01:13:19SF, and just
01:13:22the change, that
01:13:23journey from
01:13:24SF to
01:13:24Austin, the
01:13:26change in the
01:13:26landscape looking
01:13:27out of the
01:13:28window is
01:13:29fucking
01:13:29unbelievable.
01:13:31It is
01:13:32everything.
01:13:32I've seen
01:13:33everything on
01:13:34route.
01:13:34The only thing I
01:13:35haven't seen is
01:13:35snow.
01:13:35In fact, I
01:13:36probably didn't
01:13:36maybe see some
01:13:37snow, like
01:13:37San Bernardino
01:13:38Valley, if we
01:13:38went over that
01:13:39way, I don't
01:13:39know.
01:13:42There's places
01:13:42that you can
01:13:43snowboard and
01:13:43ski in fucking
01:13:44May.
01:13:46And it's
01:13:47just, it's
01:13:49so varied, and
01:13:49that is what
01:13:50makes it cool.
01:13:50I remember when
01:13:51I first started
01:13:51coming out here,
01:13:52man, mid-20s, I
01:13:55started coming out
01:13:56as part of these
01:13:57author projects
01:13:58that I was
01:13:58doing, and I
01:14:01would get flown
01:14:02out to Norfolk,
01:14:04Virginia, and it
01:14:06was just a
01:14:07military, it was
01:14:09right on the
01:14:10bay, so I'm
01:14:10seeing all of
01:14:11the huge military
01:14:13ships coming in
01:14:14and out, and
01:14:15there was one,
01:14:16weekend where we
01:14:17were staying at
01:14:18the Sheraton
01:14:18downtown in
01:14:20Norfolk, Virginia,
01:14:21right on the
01:14:22water, and there
01:14:23was a powerboat
01:14:23convention going
01:14:24on.
01:14:25Like, every
01:14:27dude had a
01:14:28mustache, every
01:14:29woman, no
01:14:29matter how old
01:14:30she was, had
01:14:31bleach blonde
01:14:31hair, platinum,
01:14:33super, I was
01:14:34like, this
01:14:34fucking rules.
01:14:36This is the
01:14:37sickest shit I've
01:14:38ever seen in my
01:14:39life.
01:14:39And then the
01:14:40next year I
01:14:41went to Baltimore,
01:14:41and it was the
01:14:424th of July, and
01:14:43I was in downtown
01:14:44Baltimore, right
01:14:45where the
01:14:45historic ships
01:14:46are, right on
01:14:46that bay, and
01:14:48the motherfuckers
01:14:50are firing
01:14:50cannons, 4th of
01:14:51July, there's all
01:14:52of these fireworks
01:14:53going up.
01:14:53I was just on
01:14:53my own.
01:14:54I was like, this
01:14:55is amazing.
01:14:55And I posted a
01:14:56photo on
01:14:57Facebook, and
01:14:59put my phone
01:15:00away, and I was
01:15:01having a beer or
01:15:01whatever, just on
01:15:02my own, and I'm
01:15:02walking about.
01:15:03It's like, wide-eyed,
01:15:04bushy-tailed, ba-ding,
01:15:07ba-ding, ba-ding, ba-ding,
01:15:08ba-ding.
01:15:08I was like, fuck,
01:15:09and all right, fair
01:15:09enough.
01:15:10Get my phone out.
01:15:11It's late, US
01:15:13time, so there's no
01:15:14one awake in the UK,
01:15:15and I basically had no
01:15:15friends in the US.
01:15:16All of the people that
01:15:17were running the event
01:15:17were saying, what are
01:15:18you doing downtown in
01:15:19Baltimore?
01:15:20Do not go past 49th
01:15:21Street.
01:15:21Do not take a turn
01:15:22down there.
01:15:23It's like, what do you
01:15:23mean?
01:15:24They're like, just don't
01:15:25go to 49th Street or
01:15:28whatever.
01:15:28And I was like, well,
01:15:29now I'm fucking going to
01:15:2948th Street.
01:15:30Okay, so go all the
01:15:32way up.
01:15:32And on every single
01:15:34street corner, there
01:15:35was a cop car with
01:15:37two police officers.
01:15:38on every intersection,
01:15:39you would have one,
01:15:40two, three, four cop
01:15:42cars, like on the
01:15:43corners of every, I'm
01:15:44like, how many fucking
01:15:45cop cars have you guys
01:15:46got?
01:15:46And they would just
01:15:47sat there.
01:15:47And I was, even that
01:15:48didn't go to 40, 50th
01:15:51Street or whatever.
01:15:52That's fucking
01:15:53fascinating to me.
01:15:54And then did this
01:15:54huge road trip, went
01:15:56to, um, fuck, what's
01:15:59the place just near
01:16:00Dollywood?
01:16:01It's like a ski lodge
01:16:03town, begins with a G.
01:16:04Uh, Gatlinburg.
01:16:05Okay.
01:16:06I went to Gatlinburg,
01:16:07uh, Tennessee, and
01:16:09this is like a Aspen-y
01:16:11like Swiss ski lodge
01:16:12town that happens to
01:16:14be beautiful weather in
01:16:16the middle of summer.
01:16:17Uh, 4th of July,
01:16:18Nashville, Broadway.
01:16:19Like, it's, it's
01:16:22fucking awesome, dude.
01:16:23Like, for people that
01:16:24I guess haven't
01:16:26traveled, haven't been
01:16:27able to get outside of
01:16:28their home state and
01:16:29see just how much
01:16:30stuff there is to do.
01:16:31Like, this sounds like
01:16:32I'm shilling for the
01:16:32fucking American
01:16:33tourist board or
01:16:34whatever, but it's
01:16:35just, it's fucking
01:16:35cool.
01:16:36It's really good and
01:16:36I'm, I'm glad that I'm
01:16:37here.
01:16:38So what do you, where
01:16:39do you think things are
01:16:40going?
01:16:40Where do you see things
01:16:41in, uh, in five years?
01:16:43Are you, are you
01:16:44optimistic about things?
01:16:45Are you thinking
01:16:46something has to come
01:16:47to a head or?
01:16:48I don't know.
01:16:49I, the, America is very
01:16:51divided thing seems less
01:16:53true than America is
01:16:54very isolated.
01:16:55I think people are more
01:16:57isolated than they are
01:16:58divided and that can
01:17:01cause people to kind of
01:17:02become quite deranged in
01:17:03the way that they see
01:17:04themselves in the world.
01:17:05Yeah.
01:17:05If you don't touch
01:17:06grass that much, I had
01:17:07this question on a Q and
01:17:07A, this guy was asked a
01:17:09question of, um, you say,
01:17:14I say that the bar is
01:17:15very low for most men
01:17:16and that, you know, if
01:17:17you're a well put together
01:17:19guy with a stable job,
01:17:20who's nice and takes care
01:17:21of himself, you're in the
01:17:22top, like 5% of all men.
01:17:25I'm like, I think that's
01:17:26true.
01:17:26And he's like, and yet I
01:17:27see all of this stuff
01:17:28online about how a guy
01:17:30needs to be six foot tall
01:17:31and make six figures a
01:17:32year.
01:17:32And I'd be emotionally
01:17:32intelligent.
01:17:33he's got to 10 years of
01:17:34therapy and all of it.
01:17:36I like, I think this is
01:17:38what happens when you spend
01:17:39too much time on the
01:17:39internet.
01:17:40Yeah.
01:17:40I think the internet
01:17:41takes the most caricatured
01:17:43extreme versions.
01:17:45It's like WWE for sociality.
01:17:48Right.
01:17:49And it turns everything
01:17:50into this kayfabe pantomime
01:17:53and everybody starts
01:17:54performing.
01:17:55And, um, what I think,
01:17:57what I hope is that we can
01:17:59continue to sort of push
01:18:01people into real world
01:18:02experiences, like stuff
01:18:04like your travel blogs.
01:18:06I think it really great at
01:18:09reminding people there is a
01:18:10fucking world of adventure
01:18:11out there off the screen.
01:18:13Adventure is not a staycation
01:18:15at a local fucking yoga
01:18:17retreat.
01:18:18That's 30 minutes from your
01:18:19house.
01:18:19Yeah.
01:18:20Adventure is taking a left
01:18:22down a road that you don't
01:18:23usually go down.
01:18:24I'll never forget.
01:18:25I did, um, as part of
01:18:27this, I want to see the
01:18:28world thing when I was
01:18:29younger, I did, uh,
01:18:30Thailand on my own.
01:18:31I did Bali on my own.
01:18:32The Thailand trip, it was
01:18:34my final full day on
01:18:36Koh Samui.
01:18:37Yeah.
01:18:37Uh, no, Koh Tao.
01:18:39Sorry, Koh Tao.
01:18:40Koh Tao, not Koh Samui.
01:18:42And, um, me and my one
01:18:44dollar per day moped, which
01:18:47had one break on it and was
01:18:48definitely going to kill
01:18:49me.
01:18:50And I was, I was
01:18:52basically just, uh, doing
01:18:53Thai boxing the whole time
01:18:54I was there.
01:18:55I was going from gym to
01:18:55gym, just fighting.
01:18:56So I thought that would be
01:18:57fun to do.
01:18:57And it would give me a
01:18:58community of people and
01:18:59I'd feel less alone.
01:19:00That worked out great.
01:19:01Final day.
01:19:02I was driving the trip from
01:19:03the smoothie place.
01:19:03I like to go to back
01:19:05toward the gym, but I'd
01:19:06already trained.
01:19:07I was like, there's a
01:19:08turning here on the left.
01:19:10I'm just going to see
01:19:10what's down this road.
01:19:12And that took me two and
01:19:14a half hours.
01:19:14I nearly ran out of gas.
01:19:16And one point opened out
01:19:18into this elephant sanctuary
01:19:19that I didn't know was
01:19:20there.
01:19:20I wasn't signposted.
01:19:22Saw that.
01:19:24Pitched up for a bit,
01:19:25just sat and watched
01:19:26things pulled back off.
01:19:27And then there's a guy
01:19:28with a huge truck with
01:19:31all of these rolls, sort
01:19:34of bark, spun up and
01:19:37rolled, tied up behind
01:19:39him.
01:19:39It looked like a scene
01:19:40out of final destination,
01:19:41like Thailand's final
01:19:42destination.
01:19:43It's all going to fall
01:19:43off and kill someone.
01:19:45And I was like, just
01:19:45watching this person
01:19:46thinking, I wonder what,
01:19:47I wonder what that guy's
01:19:48afternoon is going to
01:19:49look like.
01:19:50I wonder where he's
01:19:51going and I wonder what
01:19:52he does and I wonder
01:19:52where he lives.
01:19:53And there would be just
01:19:55the opportunity to
01:19:56see some fucking real
01:19:58shit that is not being
01:20:00fed to you at the
01:20:01velocity that you're
01:20:02used to.
01:20:03I don't know.
01:20:04I mean, I can't tell you
01:20:06basically anything that I
01:20:07watched on the internet
01:20:07last week, but I can tell
01:20:09you a story about Thailand
01:20:10that I remember doing
01:20:1010 years ago.
01:20:11Yeah.
01:20:11Like if that isn't how
01:20:13you make a richer life,
01:20:14I kind of don't know
01:20:15what is.
01:20:16And this doesn't mean
01:20:17that you got to travel
01:20:17all the way to fucking
01:20:18Thailand.
01:20:19Yeah.
01:20:19But, you know.
01:20:21No, you're fully right.
01:20:23There's the on-the-ground
01:20:24reality and the online
01:20:25reality right now, and the
01:20:27Delta is massive.
01:20:30And unless you're getting
01:20:31that on-the-ground reality
01:20:32to balance it out, you
01:20:34know, this thing starts
01:20:35taking over.
01:20:35Everything seems
01:20:36catastrophic.
01:20:37But look, next five years,
01:20:38what do I think is going
01:20:38to happen?
01:20:40I would like to think that
01:20:44we're going to get some
01:20:46degree of pushback against
01:20:47the level of onlineness.
01:20:51I wouldn't bet against
01:20:52people's ability to actually
01:20:55be able to look after
01:20:57themselves.
01:20:59And I think that people are
01:21:00way more resilient than we
01:21:01give them credit for.
01:21:02I would be worried about
01:21:03what is happening to young
01:21:05people with technology
01:21:07usage.
01:21:07But Australia and the UK
01:21:09have now both got under 16
01:21:11bans for social media.
01:21:12Even if you can work around
01:21:15it with a VPN or something,
01:21:16I think that's going to be
01:21:16good.
01:21:17And it wouldn't surprise me.
01:21:18America, unfortunately,
01:21:19the freedom thing actually
01:21:21works against you with that
01:21:22that sometimes maybe you need
01:21:24a bit of dictatorship.
01:21:25Maybe you need a little bit
01:21:26of bureaucracy and some sort
01:21:30of top-down telling of what,
01:21:33because people hate the idea
01:21:34of losing freedom.
01:21:35Yeah.
01:21:36But also along with freedom,
01:21:37the optionality can mean
01:21:38that most people kind of,
01:21:40they gravitate toward the path
01:21:44of least resistance.
01:21:45Sometimes that's something
01:21:46that they want,
01:21:47but isn't good for them.
01:21:49Yeah.
01:21:49Something they want
01:21:50but don't need.
01:21:51Yeah.
01:21:51I think a lot will depend
01:21:55on what happens internationally
01:21:56over the next couple of years
01:21:57because that is causing
01:21:59a lot of people
01:22:00to feel quite uncomfortable.
01:22:02One of the biggest niches
01:22:03or most of the biggest trends
01:22:04in finance on YouTube
01:22:05about six years ago
01:22:06were slow investing,
01:22:09401ks,
01:22:11dollar cost averaging.
01:22:12And if you look at 2026,
01:22:13it's all vibe betting,
01:22:15polymarket,
01:22:16calshi,
01:22:17get rich quick,
01:22:18crypto.
01:22:19And I think that speaks
01:22:20to the sort of short-termism
01:22:22that people are feeling.
01:22:23I don't know if the future
01:22:25is promised to me
01:22:25so I'm going to kind of
01:22:27just make immediate rewards.
01:22:31I hope that that stops
01:22:32because that's a real recipe
01:22:34for fucking disaster.
01:22:35That's a great point.
01:22:37I call it the RPT.
01:22:38Do you know what the RPT is?
01:22:40No.
01:22:41Okay.
01:22:41Nothing against Russians,
01:22:42but the Russian package tour.
01:22:45So Soviet Union falls in 91.
01:22:48Okay.
01:22:48These people have been
01:22:49behind the wall
01:22:50for decades.
01:22:52all of a sudden,
01:22:53travel opens up
01:22:54to Italia, Turkey,
01:22:56Shamal Shek,
01:22:57Egypt.
01:22:57So you have these flights
01:22:59from people that never
01:23:00were able to leave
01:23:01their country.
01:23:02Chalabinsk,
01:23:03Ufa,
01:23:05Novi Sibirsk,
01:23:06flying to these
01:23:07all-inclusive package tours.
01:23:09So you go,
01:23:11you get your food,
01:23:12your hotel,
01:23:12everything's included.
01:23:14Well,
01:23:14if you've ever been around
01:23:15an RPT,
01:23:17it's like,
01:23:19take everything off the table,
01:23:20stuff your pockets
01:23:21mentality.
01:23:22Because they've dealt
01:23:24with so much scarcity
01:23:25and you never know
01:23:26what tomorrow brings.
01:23:28And I'm saying this
01:23:30with some humor too.
01:23:31Okay.
01:23:31So not everyone's
01:23:32participating in the RPT.
01:23:34There is some short term.
01:23:35There's the UPT,
01:23:37Ukrainian package tour.
01:23:39There's the Chinese package tour.
01:23:41It's just sort of a joke
01:23:42of the package tour
01:23:42where it's like,
01:23:44I paid for this,
01:23:45I'm going to get
01:23:46all I can get.
01:23:47And I feel like the RPT
01:23:49has sort of taken over
01:23:50culture even here
01:23:52in the West
01:23:52as in,
01:23:53let me get my thing quick.
01:23:55There's nothing long term here.
01:23:57Get it off.
01:23:58I feel like the whole country
01:23:59is run like the RPT right now.
01:24:01It's like,
01:24:01I'm going to make my Moe.
01:24:03Here's my meme coin.
01:24:04I'm going to bank.
01:24:05Get out.
01:24:06Nothing long term.
01:24:08And nothing good
01:24:09really comes
01:24:10from short term thinking.
01:24:11Like you didn't get
01:24:12to where you're at
01:24:13from short term thinking.
01:24:14That's a long grind.
01:24:16Same with me.
01:24:17Even if you get the visa,
01:24:17dude,
01:24:17even to come to the country,
01:24:18it's a very long grind.
01:24:19If it was short term,
01:24:20you would have given up,
01:24:21gone,
01:24:21done something easier.
01:24:23So,
01:24:24I totally agree.
01:24:26Like,
01:24:26especially
01:24:27young in this country,
01:24:29you need to realize that
01:24:30it's not all social media,
01:24:32obviously.
01:24:32And social media shows
01:24:34RPT mentality.
01:24:38Anything that's worth something
01:24:40is long game.
01:24:42I mean,
01:24:42it took me until,
01:24:44I mean,
01:24:44I was trying to figure out
01:24:45my life at 38.
01:24:47I was stressing
01:24:48in Golden Gate Park
01:24:49in San Francisco,
01:24:50reading everything
01:24:51I could get my hands on.
01:24:52Like,
01:24:53WTF am I going to do now?
01:24:55Now you've got
01:24:56a huge YouTube channel
01:24:57and a book deal.
01:24:59Right?
01:24:59But that's,
01:25:00that's from long term thinking.
01:25:01Like having hope.
01:25:03And at the very least,
01:25:04I'd be an old man
01:25:06and be like,
01:25:06at least I went for it.
01:25:08If it didn't work out.
01:25:10I upped my entire life
01:25:11and moved countries
01:25:12on my own
01:25:12with two suitcases
01:25:13at 34.
01:25:16People who say
01:25:18you should have got
01:25:18your life sorted out
01:25:19by now
01:25:20assume that development
01:25:21comes with age
01:25:22and not work.
01:25:23And
01:25:24the whole age thing
01:25:25is it's like
01:25:26that makes sense
01:25:27if you know
01:25:27the day you're going to die.
01:25:29If I'm dying at 100
01:25:30and I have kids at
01:25:3248,
01:25:33who cares?
01:25:34But if I'm going to die at 50,
01:25:36better have them earlier
01:25:37if you want kids.
01:25:38And that's just like
01:25:38this whole,
01:25:39you have to do something
01:25:40by a certain timeline thing.
01:25:43I threw that manual out
01:25:44at a young age.
01:25:45So I understand
01:25:46that seems to be
01:25:48a little bit of a
01:25:49contradictory pattern
01:25:50to some of the stuff
01:25:51that you did
01:25:51when you were younger,
01:25:52which is
01:25:53I'm not going to be able
01:25:54to travel like this
01:25:55in the same way
01:25:55perhaps in the future.
01:25:57So it feels like
01:25:57you did have an understanding
01:25:58of part of the timeline.
01:26:00Is that fair to say?
01:26:02With that amount of freedom,
01:26:04like fully untethered,
01:26:06no relationship I was in,
01:26:08no commitments.
01:26:09Yeah,
01:26:09I was sort of foreseeing
01:26:10maybe I won't get
01:26:11that chance again.
01:26:13Yeah,
01:26:13yeah,
01:26:13yeah,
01:26:14yeah.
01:26:15What's actually happening
01:26:16on the American-Mexican border?
01:26:18What's the truth?
01:26:19Right now?
01:26:19Yeah.
01:26:20Okay.
01:26:21I did a follow-up video
01:26:25because I've done,
01:26:26I don't know,
01:26:27five, six, seven videos?
01:26:28No,
01:26:28seven, eight videos down there.
01:26:31Right now,
01:26:32it's chill.
01:26:33Crickets.
01:26:34No one's coming over illegally.
01:26:36No way.
01:26:37Nah,
01:26:37nothing.
01:26:37Nothing.
01:26:38So,
01:26:38I started doing border videos
01:26:41when I was moving
01:26:42from California to Florida
01:26:44and someone reached out
01:26:46and said,
01:26:47you got to come down
01:26:47to the border.
01:26:48And I was in the middle
01:26:49of a move,
01:26:49driving across country.
01:26:50I'm like,
01:26:50nah,
01:26:51I'm not going to do that.
01:26:52I'm too busy.
01:26:53And my wife was like,
01:26:54detour.
01:26:55Do it.
01:26:56Go do it.
01:26:57We got to Florida,
01:26:58dropped my bags,
01:27:00dropped her,
01:27:00and went right to the border
01:27:01in Texas.
01:27:02So,
01:27:03not far from here
01:27:03in McAllen.
01:27:05And so,
01:27:06I went in with some
01:27:07preconceptions of,
01:27:09you know,
01:27:10why would you want
01:27:11a border wall?
01:27:11That's,
01:27:14I don't think that's
01:27:15the right way
01:27:16to go about this.
01:27:17And then after spending
01:27:18time there
01:27:19during that trip,
01:27:20I left.
01:27:21Yeah,
01:27:21you want a border wall
01:27:22down there.
01:27:23Why?
01:27:24Look,
01:27:25if the wall's 30 feet,
01:27:27migrants are going to
01:27:28get a 32-foot ladder.
01:27:30And they go,
01:27:31it's not stopping
01:27:31everything,
01:27:32obviously.
01:27:33But,
01:27:34for customs
01:27:34and border protection,
01:27:37it pinches everyone.
01:27:39They put their technology
01:27:40on the wall.
01:27:41They can see better.
01:27:42They can manage it better.
01:27:43You have to see
01:27:44these landscapes
01:27:44to understand
01:27:45how vast they are.
01:27:46Do you know
01:27:47how much of the border
01:27:48is covered by
01:27:49protective fencing,
01:27:50then?
01:27:51I don't know.
01:27:53California,
01:27:53most of California,
01:27:57a lot of Arizona,
01:28:00not all of Arizona,
01:28:02not all of Texas.
01:28:03It's got to be
01:28:03one of the longest
01:28:04conjoining borders
01:28:06in the world,
01:28:07I have to assume,
01:28:09coast to coast.
01:28:10Perhaps,
01:28:11but there are a lot of-
01:28:12Canada will be more,
01:28:12actually.
01:28:13Oh,
01:28:13yeah,
01:28:13that's the longest border,
01:28:14actually,
01:28:15Canada.
01:28:15And I've done a story
01:28:16up there,
01:28:17too,
01:28:17which was interesting.
01:28:18But-
01:28:18Oh, yeah,
01:28:19there it is.
01:28:20For the U.S.-Mexico border,
01:28:22roughly 700,
01:28:23750 miles of its
01:28:24nearly 2,000 miles
01:28:25have some form
01:28:26of primary fence
01:28:27or wall,
01:28:28about 35% to 38%.
01:28:29That is not one
01:28:31continuous wall,
01:28:32much of it is replaced.
01:28:33Earlier barriers
01:28:33and the remainder
01:28:34is covered by terrain,
01:28:35patrol sensors,
01:28:36and other enforcement measures.
01:28:38The U.S.-Canada border
01:28:39is overwhelmingly unfenced.
01:28:41That's nothing up there.
01:28:42Okay,
01:28:43so I went down.
01:28:44I'm like,
01:28:45I left that first trip.
01:28:46Yeah,
01:28:46you should put a wall up there.
01:28:48The second trip,
01:28:49I went to West Texas
01:28:50where the Rio Grande is.
01:28:53And if you put a wall up there,
01:28:55you give Mexico
01:28:55the whole river.
01:28:56It would destroy those places.
01:28:58So I left that trip
01:28:59being like,
01:28:59yeah,
01:29:00you wouldn't want to-
01:29:00No wall.
01:29:01You wouldn't want
01:29:01to put a wall up there.
01:29:03Then I went to Tijuana
01:29:04and there are two walls
01:29:05between Tijuana
01:29:06and California.
01:29:07Two mega walls.
01:29:09Is it one to keep
01:29:10the Mexicans out
01:29:10and one to keep
01:29:11the Americans out?
01:29:13No,
01:29:13double-
01:29:14Double Mexicans.
01:29:15Double front.
01:29:16Okay.
01:29:17Because if you didn't
01:29:18have walls there,
01:29:19it'd just be a
01:29:19full-on bum rush.
01:29:21Right.
01:29:21To the north.
01:29:25Arizona's interesting.
01:29:26So every sector,
01:29:27there are,
01:29:28I think,
01:29:2820 sectors
01:29:29in the United States
01:29:31where there's the Yuma sector
01:29:32and the Tucson sector.
01:29:34They're basically
01:29:34different border jurisdictions.
01:29:36Yuma sector,
01:29:37when I went there,
01:29:39140 nations
01:29:40were coming.
01:29:40through.
01:29:41It was wild.
01:29:43We had an OTM policy
01:29:45other than Mexicans.
01:29:47A lot of people
01:29:47don't know this.
01:29:48Like Mexicans
01:29:49could not come over
01:29:50unless they were
01:29:51really good.
01:29:52But the cartel
01:29:53controlled
01:29:54that whole situation.
01:29:56A lot of Indians.
01:29:58Got Indians on my video
01:29:59from Delhi.
01:30:00Fly Delhi,
01:30:01Mexico City,
01:30:02Mexico City,
01:30:04Mexicali.
01:30:05Cartel picks them up
01:30:06at the airport
01:30:06like Epcot Center
01:30:08without the name tags.
01:30:10Brings them
01:30:10to the gap
01:30:11in the wall.
01:30:12Gives a U.S. phone.
01:30:13Get to the U.S. side.
01:30:14Dial 911.
01:30:16Our Customs Board
01:30:17of Protection
01:30:17comes on them.
01:30:18And I was there for it.
01:30:19It's in one of my videos.
01:30:21Quarter,
01:30:22half mile down,
01:30:23Sinaloa cartels
01:30:23running.
01:30:25The Fent,
01:30:25the Young Girls,
01:30:26all the stuff
01:30:27that's definitely
01:30:28going to get busted on.
01:30:29But at that time,
01:30:30we had to process.
01:30:33It's a very confusing topic.
01:30:34And unfortunately,
01:30:35both sides
01:30:36have used it
01:30:36as a weapon.
01:30:38But at that time,
01:30:40it was pretty much
01:30:41fair game
01:30:41to claim asylum.
01:30:43Depended on
01:30:43what the country
01:30:44you're from.
01:30:44But if you're from India
01:30:45and you could say,
01:30:46hey,
01:30:47political persecution,
01:30:49I need to leave.
01:30:50It's dangerous
01:30:51for me to be in India.
01:30:53We had to process them.
01:30:55Buses would come in,
01:30:57pick them up,
01:30:58bring them into
01:30:59a detention center,
01:31:00and then off
01:31:00into the interior.
01:31:02New York,
01:31:02Chicago,
01:31:03Los Angeles,
01:31:04all over the country.
01:31:06With an asylum court hearing,
01:31:09hey,
01:31:09come to this court hearing
01:31:10and the courts
01:31:11are still backed up,
01:31:13not enough judges.
01:31:14Some are five years out,
01:31:15some are seven years out.
01:31:17So the word on the street
01:31:18or the word in the world
01:31:20was game on,
01:31:22green light,
01:31:23come on.
01:31:24You just have to pay
01:31:25the cartel
01:31:26the right amount of money.
01:31:27So it was insane.
01:31:30I shouldn't have done
01:31:31my fucking 01.
01:31:32I didn't need to do my 01.
01:31:33Yeah,
01:31:33you didn't.
01:31:34And then you'd see
01:31:35the fallout in places
01:31:36like Chicago
01:31:37where all the police stations,
01:31:40you had Venezuelan migrants
01:31:41just sleeping out
01:31:42on the floor.
01:31:42Like you walk
01:31:43in a police station,
01:31:44it was just sleeping bags,
01:31:45kids' toys,
01:31:46kids playing,
01:31:47and all the police officers
01:31:49were just like
01:31:50hating their lives.
01:31:51That was the asylum place
01:31:52they'd been assigned to?
01:31:53These cities weren't ready
01:31:56for this influx.
01:31:57These places weren't ready
01:31:58and it was just
01:31:58a mad influx.
01:31:59And so I don't blame
01:32:00the migrants
01:32:01because it was green light.
01:32:03I would have done the same.
01:32:04Play the system.
01:32:04I'm in Honduras,
01:32:06six grand of the cartel.
01:32:08I'm going up.
01:32:09I'm making 10 times
01:32:10as much money
01:32:11and living a better life.
01:32:14But the influx was insane.
01:32:17Unsustainable.
01:32:18I thought my channel
01:32:21was going to get demonetized
01:32:22for sure on that topic
01:32:23and maybe shadow banned.
01:32:27But it wasn't.
01:32:29Thank God.
01:32:29I've never had a problem
01:32:30with you two.
01:32:30Knock on wood with that.
01:32:32But I thought it was
01:32:33going to have an issue.
01:32:35And I would get in
01:32:36with the sheriffs
01:32:36because the sheriffs,
01:32:37this is a really cool thing
01:32:38about America.
01:32:40We have local law enforcement.
01:32:41You have City of Austin
01:32:42law enforcement, right?
01:32:43What county are we in?
01:32:45Travis.
01:32:45Travis.
01:32:46Okay.
01:32:47There's the sheriff's department.
01:32:49Both doing law enforcement,
01:32:51operating completely different.
01:32:52The sheriffs are voted in
01:32:54by their constituents.
01:32:56The only people that oversee them
01:32:58really are the voters.
01:33:00Okay.
01:33:00Where the local police,
01:33:02city council,
01:33:03it's tied into local governance.
01:33:05So I can never get in
01:33:07with police departments.
01:33:08The only one,
01:33:09Glendale police,
01:33:10basically Phoenix,
01:33:11shout out to Glendale police.
01:33:12They let me do my thing.
01:33:13Other than that, nobody.
01:33:14But the sheriffs,
01:33:16if you get a good sheriff,
01:33:18like I got in Yuma County,
01:33:21Sheriff Wilmot,
01:33:23like straight out of the movies,
01:33:25handlebar mustache,
01:33:27got the cowboy hat on.
01:33:28Unreal.
01:33:28And he brought me
01:33:30and the camera
01:33:31and the audience
01:33:32into stuff
01:33:32that no one
01:33:33was getting access to
01:33:34because Customs and Border Protection
01:33:36had a gag order.
01:33:38No one could speak.
01:33:39And it was insane.
01:33:42So the problem right now,
01:33:44whatever media you're watching,
01:33:47everything's got a bias.
01:33:48Not the real story.
01:33:48Everything's got a bias.
01:33:50And so some people
01:33:51didn't even know
01:33:52there was a situation
01:33:53really going on.
01:33:55Other people think like
01:33:56America's going to blow up tomorrow.
01:33:59And there's no real place to go
01:34:02where truth is the North Star.
01:34:04At least I haven't found it
01:34:06in media.
01:34:07I don't know where you go.
01:34:08You have to read wide.
01:34:10You have to watch wide.
01:34:11So again,
01:34:12a lot of the benefits
01:34:14you have in this country,
01:34:15freedom is one of those.
01:34:17Amazing,
01:34:18limited restrictions,
01:34:20but also massive optionality
01:34:21and the inability to coordinate.
01:34:24Right?
01:34:24Like you can't get top down with that.
01:34:26The same thing
01:34:26where I don't think
01:34:29that this is the case
01:34:30in the UK.
01:34:30Right?
01:34:31You have
01:34:31Northumbria Police Constabulary,
01:34:33which will be for Newcastle,
01:34:35the city that I was from,
01:34:37Northumbria being the county.
01:34:39And it's one cohesive unit.
01:34:42Yep.
01:34:43And there'll be divisions
01:34:44and whatever else in that.
01:34:45But this means
01:34:46if you've got the sheriff
01:34:47and his guys,
01:34:48then you've got Austin PD
01:34:49and their guys,
01:34:50and then there's probably
01:34:51some bullshit
01:34:51with like Travis County
01:34:52as well too.
01:34:54Trying to coordinate that
01:34:55because you've got
01:34:56these systems
01:34:57that are all trying
01:34:58to interlock
01:34:59and there'll be
01:35:00a little bit of power struggle
01:35:01and it doesn't take much.
01:35:02Anybody that's worked
01:35:03in a company
01:35:03that's grown quickly
01:35:04or anybody that's been
01:35:05a part of a startup
01:35:06or seen any business
01:35:08that's trying to grow
01:35:09as soon as you go
01:35:10from founder
01:35:11plus founder and assistant
01:35:13plus founder and assistant
01:35:13or something,
01:35:14it doesn't take long
01:35:15before the diseconomies
01:35:17of scale
01:35:17really come online.
01:35:18All the coordination,
01:35:19the communication problems,
01:35:20things get missed.
01:35:22Everybody's doing
01:35:22the fucking Spider-Man
01:35:23mean thing
01:35:24where they're looking
01:35:24at someone else
01:35:25whose job it's supposed to be.
01:35:26Sure.
01:35:27That's what you have
01:35:28in a country
01:35:29that's like that
01:35:30and because it's so new,
01:35:32there can be
01:35:33little power grabs
01:35:34or we'll build this,
01:35:35we'll build that
01:35:35and before you know it,
01:35:37why haven't we pruned
01:35:39this area
01:35:40of this particular bureaucracy
01:35:42and the disadvantage
01:35:44that we have in the UK
01:35:45is that because
01:35:46it's been around
01:35:47for so long,
01:35:48we've accumulated
01:35:49loads of pomp
01:35:50and circumstance
01:35:50and bullshit.
01:35:52Like there are all
01:35:53of these,
01:35:54when I graduated
01:35:55from university,
01:35:56both times,
01:35:57there's this insane
01:35:59procession of stuff.
01:36:01there's a mace bearer,
01:36:03the dude carrying
01:36:03a fucking medieval weapon
01:36:04and everybody
01:36:06dots their caps
01:36:07in different orders
01:36:08to people
01:36:09based on hierarchy
01:36:10and it's like cool
01:36:11and kitschy
01:36:12and old and worldy
01:36:13or whatever,
01:36:14this old university thing.
01:36:17But like,
01:36:18that's also the way
01:36:19that the police is run
01:36:20and that's also the way
01:36:21that people are voted in
01:36:22and that's also the way
01:36:23that the House of Commons works
01:36:24and that's also the way
01:36:25the banking system works.
01:36:26So because it's old,
01:36:28you have a lot
01:36:29of the bullshit
01:36:29that's been pruned
01:36:30is good
01:36:31because things
01:36:31that weren't able
01:36:32to contribute
01:36:33have been gotten rid of
01:36:34but there's also loads
01:36:35of superfluous
01:36:36like horse shit
01:36:37that's in there too.
01:36:38So it's just,
01:36:39again,
01:36:39the only two countries
01:36:40that I can speak on
01:36:41with any degree
01:36:42of non-expertise
01:36:43is the UK
01:36:44and the US
01:36:44and what I see
01:36:45in the US
01:36:46is like a huge
01:36:47coordination problem
01:36:48because it's so big
01:36:49and so sprawling
01:36:50and there's been,
01:36:51I don't want to say
01:36:52a power grab
01:36:52but you guys
01:36:54have had to build quickly
01:36:55for 250 years.
01:36:57Yeah,
01:36:58three lifetimes.
01:36:59Dude,
01:36:59it is nothing.
01:37:01Nothing.
01:37:02Trees in my garden
01:37:04that are older
01:37:05in the UK
01:37:05that are older
01:37:06than this fucking country.
01:37:07Yeah.
01:37:08So it's,
01:37:09it's not a surprise
01:37:11that it's a challenge
01:37:11and then changing technologies,
01:37:15you know,
01:37:15whatever's going on geopolitically,
01:37:18people coming across the border
01:37:19like it's fucking gnarly.
01:37:21It's messy.
01:37:24the good side of that
01:37:25would be,
01:37:26hey,
01:37:26without those sheriffs,
01:37:28there's no way
01:37:28any of us
01:37:29would have seen
01:37:30what I could show
01:37:31if it was all,
01:37:32it was completely
01:37:33top down
01:37:35in that sense.
01:37:36Now,
01:37:37in America's founding,
01:37:40the crown,
01:37:41the king,
01:37:41didn't want
01:37:42us to move past Appalachia.
01:37:45Too much to manage,
01:37:47too many skirmishes
01:37:48with the natives.
01:37:49Yeah.
01:37:49I mean,
01:37:50that's what,
01:37:52it's such a massive thing
01:37:54to manage
01:37:54where
01:37:56if you don't have
01:37:58some of these
01:37:58autonomous things working
01:38:00in the spirit of America,
01:38:03America's all the crazies,
01:38:05you being one of them.
01:38:06Correct.
01:38:07Right?
01:38:07You came here
01:38:08without like,
01:38:09no guarantee.
01:38:11You had your thing going,
01:38:13so you had some footing,
01:38:15some foundation,
01:38:16but think of most
01:38:16that came here.
01:38:17They're like,
01:38:18my family got on a boat.
01:38:19How long was the journey
01:38:23for the original migrants
01:38:26that came to America
01:38:27a few hundred years ago?
01:38:28It would be six weeks
01:38:29on a ship
01:38:30or something
01:38:31from fucking Ireland,
01:38:32from some port,
01:38:33probably an island
01:38:34or on the west coast
01:38:35of the UK.
01:38:36Yeah.
01:38:37My family came over
01:38:39in 1918
01:38:40on a boat from Italy,
01:38:42from Naples.
01:38:44No English,
01:38:4518 years old
01:38:45was my,
01:38:46it was great-grandparents,
01:38:47so great-grandmother,
01:38:48great-grandfather.
01:38:50They all came
01:38:50into Hoboken, New Jersey.
01:38:52I mean,
01:38:52the first European,
01:38:53no, no,
01:38:54more,
01:38:54like a little bit,
01:38:56like a little bit newer
01:38:57than that.
01:38:58It's like 1800s.
01:39:00Try like,
01:39:02because I have to assume
01:39:03that that would have been,
01:39:051800s,
01:39:06most immigrants
01:39:06from Europe
01:39:07and America
01:39:07spent four to eight weeks
01:39:10at sea
01:39:11by sailing ship.
01:39:12Okay,
01:39:12by the late 1800s,
01:39:13steamships
01:39:14had made it faster.
01:39:15Even one to two weeks
01:39:17on a ship,
01:39:18but that at the start
01:39:19of the 1800s,
01:39:20hey,
01:39:20dude,
01:39:21do you want to go
01:39:22to this place
01:39:22that you have absolutely
01:39:24no idea what it's like?
01:39:25It's basically undeveloped.
01:39:27There isn't much going on.
01:39:28There was a revolution recently.
01:39:29Maybe it's over.
01:39:30I think so.
01:39:30I'm not really too sure.
01:39:31It's going to take
01:39:32between a month
01:39:32and two months.
01:39:33Survival,
01:39:34yeah,
01:39:34maybe.
01:39:36Want to go?
01:39:37That is why
01:39:38this country
01:39:38is filled with people
01:39:39that are risk-takers.
01:39:40They're the progeny
01:39:42of people that went,
01:39:43fuck it,
01:39:44let's get on that ship
01:39:45for two months.
01:39:45Let's do it.
01:39:46And then the ones
01:39:46that went west
01:39:47into native lands,
01:39:50how sketchy
01:39:51would that have been?
01:39:55So it attracts that.
01:39:56It always has.
01:39:57And you're the latest iteration.
01:39:59That's true.
01:40:00Tell me about this thing
01:40:01you did in the Hamptons.
01:40:02Because when you're thinking
01:40:03about rural,
01:40:05off-grids,
01:40:06I don't immediately think
01:40:09of the Hamptons
01:40:11as being in that mix.
01:40:13So the Hamptons
01:40:15met up with this guy,
01:40:16Jimmy,
01:40:17Jimmy Ding.
01:40:18Ding because he fixes surfboards.
01:40:20The Dings on surfboards.
01:40:22Great name.
01:40:23We started at the dump.
01:40:25Dumps.
01:40:26So think of the most bougie,
01:40:28one of the most bougie
01:40:28zip codes in the country.
01:40:30We started at the dumps
01:40:31because Jimmy's
01:40:31old school local.
01:40:33And so what I wanted to show
01:40:34is like you can label
01:40:35the Hamptons.
01:40:36I always thought of starch,
01:40:38linens, helicopters,
01:40:40big pads.
01:40:41But there's a whole
01:40:42working class that lives there
01:40:44in many of these
01:40:45wealthy places, right?
01:40:46So I just got in his story.
01:40:48Fascinating guy.
01:40:49Grew up there.
01:40:50Fisherman.
01:40:51And you see a lot
01:40:52of the tension
01:40:53that exists in these
01:40:55places where
01:40:55the real estate
01:40:57shot up so much.
01:40:58How do you hang on?
01:41:00Right?
01:41:01How does a guy like Jimmy hang on?
01:41:02In what period of time
01:41:03did the real estate
01:41:05go vertical?
01:41:06Well, it was always a
01:41:07place for New York City's
01:41:09elite to get out
01:41:10of the city.
01:41:11It's been desirable
01:41:11for a while.
01:41:12Yeah.
01:41:12But there was enough
01:41:13land and space
01:41:14back in the,
01:41:16I believe his family
01:41:16got a place
01:41:17back in the 50s
01:41:18or 60s.
01:41:19Dirt cheap
01:41:20to get a normal home.
01:41:22And now it's just
01:41:23through the roof
01:41:24and it's everywhere
01:41:24in the country.
01:41:25And I think in the UK
01:41:27too, right?
01:41:28Correct.
01:41:28Yeah.
01:41:29It seems like it's
01:41:29a worldwide phenomenon.
01:41:30It depends where
01:41:31you want to live.
01:41:32The UK is an interesting
01:41:33one.
01:41:34I'm from the most
01:41:35northerly town
01:41:36that isn't Scotland.
01:41:38I'm as far north
01:41:38as you can go.
01:41:40In Game of Thrones,
01:41:41which is loosely based
01:41:42on the War of the Roses
01:41:43from like the 10,000 AD,
01:41:49Winterfell,
01:41:50which is the fucking
01:41:51freezing cold,
01:41:52dark, miserable place
01:41:53that the Starks are from.
01:41:54That's based on Newcastle.
01:41:55So that's Newcastle.
01:41:56And then there's a wall,
01:41:57right?
01:41:57There's the ice wall
01:41:58and that's Hadrian's wall.
01:41:59And that's not far from us.
01:42:00So there is a wall
01:42:02that's still there
01:42:02that was meant
01:42:03to keep the barbarians out
01:42:04and they were the Scots.
01:42:06And if you were to spend
01:42:08maybe now
01:42:11150,000 pounds,
01:42:15so $200,000,
01:42:16something like that,
01:42:17maybe 180,
01:42:18you could get
01:42:19a very nice family home,
01:42:23probably semi-detached,
01:42:24terraced in a,
01:42:26you know,
01:42:27be a 1900,
01:42:30early 1900s build brick.
01:42:32It'll be really nicely,
01:42:34but it's not going to be
01:42:34super cool, modern,
01:42:36but it'll be kitschy
01:42:36and really, really nice
01:42:37and there'll be enough space,
01:42:38especially for something
01:42:39in the UK.
01:42:40If you take that amount of money
01:42:41and try to go to London,
01:42:43you've got two years of rent.
01:42:44Yeah.
01:42:45Or three years of rent,
01:42:46maybe,
01:42:46if you're lucky.
01:42:47It is,
01:42:48the UK,
01:42:49I think,
01:42:50is the,
01:42:51whatever,
01:42:52fifth biggest,
01:42:52tenth biggest economy
01:42:53in the world,
01:42:53something like that.
01:42:55So people look at the UK
01:42:56as a rich country,
01:42:57but the UK is a poor country
01:42:58that surrounds a very rich city.
01:43:01And the city is London
01:43:02and the city is really
01:43:03the city of London.
01:43:04Yeah.
01:43:05And that is the financial hub.
01:43:07And then you've got
01:43:07this sprawl out
01:43:08into Westminster
01:43:09and then London
01:43:10and greater London.
01:43:11And then you get outside
01:43:13of the M25
01:43:14and it starts to fall off
01:43:15a bit more.
01:43:15And then you get to
01:43:16Birmingham and Manchester
01:43:18and Newcastle.
01:43:19And so it's affordable
01:43:20depending on where
01:43:21you want to be.
01:43:22Is there a lot of tension
01:43:23between the London crowd
01:43:25and the rural crowd?
01:43:26Not particularly,
01:43:27at least maybe
01:43:28the rural crowd
01:43:29when it comes to sort of
01:43:30farming and stuff like that.
01:43:31That wasn't something
01:43:32I was integrated in.
01:43:33It certainly felt to me
01:43:34growing up in Stockton
01:43:37on Tees,
01:43:38which is 50 miles south
01:43:39of Newcastle,
01:43:40famous for having
01:43:41the UK's widest high street
01:43:43and the highest teen
01:43:45pregnancy rating
01:43:46in the UK.
01:43:46And then it lost that.
01:43:47You weren't part of that?
01:43:48Or were you?
01:43:49I wasn't.
01:43:49I was desperately trying
01:43:50to contribute,
01:43:50but I was a horrendously
01:43:52uncool teenager.
01:43:54And then I never thought
01:43:58of London as being
01:44:00a part of what
01:44:01I was a part of.
01:44:02Okay.
01:44:03It didn't feel like
01:44:04a part of the same country.
01:44:05It was, I guess,
01:44:07and maybe I went
01:44:08when I was like 17
01:44:10or 18 a few times.
01:44:12But it really is
01:44:15south versus north
01:44:16because the shape
01:44:17of the country
01:44:18is so particular, right?
01:44:20It's long and thin.
01:44:21And you talk about south.
01:44:22No one's talking
01:44:23about east versus west.
01:44:24Like there is a difference
01:44:25between people
01:44:25that are from Liverpool
01:44:26and people that are
01:44:27from Newcastle
01:44:28or people that are
01:44:29from Manchester
01:44:29and people that are
01:44:30from Leeds, right?
01:44:31Going left to right,
01:44:32but no one really
01:44:32gives a fuck.
01:44:33Like it's just people
01:44:34with different silly accents.
01:44:35But north to south,
01:44:37as soon as you get
01:44:37below Birmingham
01:44:38and you start to get
01:44:39toward London,
01:44:41that's when things,
01:44:42there is definitely
01:44:43a sense that,
01:44:44oh, these are
01:44:44two different cultures.
01:44:45Don't forget,
01:44:45they're two kind
01:44:46of different climates.
01:44:48Like it is different
01:44:49to go.
01:44:49It's not that far.
01:44:50It's three hours
01:44:52on a train,
01:44:53a pretty quick train,
01:44:55but it's, you know,
01:44:56400 miles,
01:44:57something like that.
01:44:58Yeah.
01:44:58And that difference
01:44:59is not insignificant
01:45:01when it comes
01:45:02to the weather.
01:45:03Like to go from
01:45:03the northeast
01:45:04where we are
01:45:04to the south coast
01:45:05because also we're
01:45:05next to the North Sea.
01:45:06That's the coldest sea,
01:45:07I think, in the world.
01:45:08And it's really
01:45:10fucking dangerous.
01:45:11But yeah,
01:45:11there is definitely
01:45:13a detachment.
01:45:15If you're not
01:45:15in London,
01:45:17you are not
01:45:18really considered
01:45:20much by the press.
01:45:22Press stories
01:45:22aren't bothered
01:45:23about what's going
01:45:23on in fucking
01:45:24Rotherham, right?
01:45:25They don't care
01:45:26about whether
01:45:26Stoke-on-Trent
01:45:27has got
01:45:28some issue
01:45:30that's occurring
01:45:31locally, socially.
01:45:32It will be
01:45:33on local news,
01:45:33but it's not going
01:45:34to break out
01:45:34into national news.
01:45:35So it is
01:45:36all of the
01:45:37money and all
01:45:38of the attention
01:45:39is just focused
01:45:40on London.
01:45:41And that's fine.
01:45:42What about
01:45:43Isle of Man?
01:45:44Is that when you
01:45:44have big bucks
01:45:45and you're trying
01:45:46to avoid the taxes?
01:45:47I don't know
01:45:48whether there's
01:45:48a tax haven out there.
01:45:49I know there's
01:45:49a big festival.
01:45:50I've been to,
01:45:52I spent a little bit
01:45:52of time near there
01:45:54and it's a retirement
01:45:57place for a lot
01:45:58of people.
01:45:58I know that's
01:45:59interesting.
01:45:59I mean, dude,
01:46:00if you look at
01:46:00even the UK,
01:46:02the fucking Hebrides,
01:46:03these islands
01:46:04off the northwest
01:46:04west of Scotland,
01:46:06I think.
01:46:08Can you pull up
01:46:09Google Maps?
01:46:09Jared, we can just
01:46:10do it on the big screen.
01:46:11Just search Hebrides
01:46:12for me.
01:46:13And it is
01:46:15so fucking cool
01:46:16up there.
01:46:18I got to get out there.
01:46:19Fred again
01:46:20did a tour
01:46:21of Stornoway,
01:46:23I think it was.
01:46:24So Stornoway
01:46:25is one of these islands.
01:46:27And yeah,
01:46:28just the amount
01:46:31of variety
01:46:32that you do have
01:46:33in a place
01:46:33that's got such
01:46:34population density
01:46:35is pretty fucking
01:46:35cool.
01:46:36Yeah, the Hebrides.
01:46:37So look at that,
01:46:38dude.
01:46:38Look at where that is.
01:46:39So zoom in for me,
01:46:40Jared.
01:46:41Kirkwall,
01:46:42what's up there?
01:46:43Yeah,
01:46:44so look at this,
01:46:44dude.
01:46:45Wow.
01:46:45That's the Hebrides
01:46:46there.
01:46:46And it's just such a,
01:46:48so this was
01:46:49halfway between
01:46:51what the
01:46:52fingers,
01:46:53I think,
01:46:54were from
01:46:55Game of Thrones.
01:46:55Look at me,
01:46:56the only reference
01:46:56I can give you
01:46:57is fucking
01:46:57Game of Thrones
01:46:58things.
01:47:00But yeah,
01:47:01all of that,
01:47:02that's the Isle of Skye
01:47:03that you can see
01:47:04there,
01:47:04S-K-Y-D.
01:47:06I bet the accent
01:47:07really changes out there,
01:47:09huh,
01:47:09on some of those islands.
01:47:10I don't know,
01:47:11I'm not Scottish
01:47:12enough to be able
01:47:12to tell you
01:47:14what the difference
01:47:16would be
01:47:16between them
01:47:17and somebody
01:47:17that's maybe
01:47:18from Glasgow.
01:47:18Go across for me,
01:47:20Jared,
01:47:20just pan east.
01:47:21Okay,
01:47:21so Berwick-upon-Tweed,
01:47:22top right.
01:47:23Okay.
01:47:23There.
01:47:24That is the border.
01:47:25So you can see
01:47:26the border
01:47:26sort of cutting through
01:47:27and then it cuts down
01:47:28to Northumberland
01:47:29National Park
01:47:29and there's Anik,
01:47:30which is a place
01:47:31that I would go
01:47:32and go to like
01:47:34there's some national parks,
01:47:35the equivalent
01:47:35of national parks
01:47:36in the UK.
01:47:37The difference
01:47:37between Berwick-upon-Tweed,
01:47:40Anik,
01:47:41and Dunbar
01:47:42is Anik
01:47:44completely
01:47:45English accent.
01:47:47Berwick-upon-Tweed
01:47:48is 20 miles away.
01:47:51You're like,
01:47:51there's something
01:47:51going on here
01:47:52and then by the time
01:47:53that you get
01:47:53to another 20 miles away
01:47:54in Dunbar,
01:47:55it is completely Scottish.
01:47:56So the difference
01:47:57is so fucking stark.
01:47:59Remembering that
01:48:00this isn't like
01:48:01driving across the border
01:48:02from France
01:48:03to fucking Switzerland
01:48:05or something.
01:48:06This is you
01:48:07being in the same money,
01:48:11the same everything,
01:48:12but just is so,
01:48:13and then pan down
01:48:13a bit more for me
01:48:14and then you can see
01:48:15there's Newcastle.
01:48:16So that's the place
01:48:16that I grew up in
01:48:18and then Stockton
01:48:18on Tees below it,
01:48:19which is where
01:48:20I actually was born.
01:48:22So yeah,
01:48:22the north of the UK
01:48:23is kind of fascinating.
01:48:24But dude,
01:48:24you keep going down
01:48:25and you keep going down.
01:48:26There's Leeds.
01:48:27People are kind of
01:48:27interested in Leeds.
01:48:28There's Manchester,
01:48:29Liverpool.
01:48:30Okay,
01:48:30there's some ports
01:48:30and shit that are
01:48:31going on there,
01:48:32but no one gives a fuck.
01:48:33Sheffield,
01:48:33no one gives a fuck.
01:48:34Nobody cares at all.
01:48:36Keeping going down.
01:48:37Stoke-on-Trent,
01:48:38definitely no one gives a fuck.
01:48:39Nottingham,
01:48:40nothing.
01:48:40Birmingham,
01:48:41kind of a little bit.
01:48:41I guess Manchester,
01:48:42a little bit.
01:48:43There's some stuff going on.
01:48:44You're still going down.
01:48:45You're still at Peterborough,
01:48:46absolutely nothing.
01:48:47Cambridge,
01:48:48Oxford,
01:48:48Luton,
01:48:49St. Albans,
01:48:49and then you get to London.
01:48:51You've got the M25,
01:48:52which is that ring
01:48:53that goes around
01:48:54the outside of it.
01:48:56And if you're outside that,
01:48:57people kind of don't really
01:48:58care all that much.
01:49:00There's some bits
01:49:01that people give a shit
01:49:01if there's a big deal
01:49:02in Manchester,
01:49:03maybe Birmingham,
01:49:04but you get away from this
01:49:06and people really don't care.
01:49:09They don't even go out
01:49:10to Dover, right?
01:49:11No,
01:49:12no,
01:49:12not really.
01:49:13I don't think...
01:49:13Come on,
01:49:13Tabin and Dover.
01:49:14Yeah.
01:49:14Did you know there's an island
01:49:16in the United States
01:49:17and Maryland
01:49:17that some of the old timers
01:49:19still speak a form
01:49:21of Elizabethan English?
01:49:23No,
01:49:23but I completely endorse it.
01:49:25Yeah.
01:49:25So I met this guy,
01:49:26I made a video with him.
01:49:28He's actually in the book too.
01:49:29His name's Jerry.
01:49:30His family's been there
01:49:31374 years.
01:49:33And he's got,
01:49:34you're going to love the accent.
01:49:36Is there a video of this guy?
01:49:37Can we get a video of him up?
01:49:38Okay,
01:49:39what do we search?
01:49:40Smith Island.
01:49:41I would just type in
01:49:43Peter Santanello,
01:49:44Smith Island.
01:49:45A lot of Brits
01:49:46watch my channel too.
01:49:48And they're like,
01:49:48that guy sounds
01:49:50straight out of Leeds.
01:49:51I forget where.
01:49:52Okay.
01:49:52Oh,
01:49:52this is going to be
01:49:53fucking fascinating.
01:49:53Allow me to diagnose his accent.
01:49:55He's a water man.
01:49:57That's a British term,
01:49:59right?
01:49:59This one?
01:49:59His family lived on that one?
01:50:00Yeah, that one.
01:50:02Hey,
01:50:02how you doing?
01:50:04Funny.
01:50:05He's a yarny too.
01:50:07I mean,
01:50:07this guy is...
01:50:07He's a yarny.
01:50:08What's a yarny?
01:50:09Is that a British word?
01:50:11Yarny,
01:50:12which means,
01:50:13it's like an old English word for friend.
01:50:15That means friend.
01:50:16Yarny.
01:50:16Yeah.
01:50:17Is this the guy that you're thinking has got an English accent?
01:50:23Yeah,
01:50:23I guess not.
01:50:24No,
01:50:24no.
01:50:25I'm sorry.
01:50:25It's southern.
01:50:27It's very fucking southern.
01:50:28There might be a little something going on.
01:50:29A few words come through.
01:50:30All right,
01:50:30let me see someone else.
01:50:32Let me hear these guys talk.
01:50:34Four or five days would be a good soak time for them now.
01:50:37Yeah.
01:50:38I guess the kittyfish is eating them all up.
01:50:40They're eating oysters.
01:50:41I don't know what he's saying.
01:50:42They're eating oysters too?
01:50:44Yeah,
01:50:44the man has it on their pictures.
01:50:46He had minos,
01:50:48oysters,
01:50:49big clams,
01:50:50and a lot of cribs.
01:50:52Okay,
01:50:53so,
01:50:53I mean,
01:50:54they look like lovely gentlemen.
01:50:56I wholeheartedly,
01:50:57You're not hearing it.
01:50:58I wholeheartedly support
01:50:59a like accent-driven recolonization of this country
01:51:03from England,
01:51:04but that is fucking cultural appropriation
01:51:08if ever I've heard it,
01:51:09if you think that that guy sounds English.
01:51:11I'm sorry.
01:51:13Not pissing on the parade.
01:51:14Jerry's a great guy.
01:51:15Let's see that guy.
01:51:16Let's see that guy in the black t-shirt.
01:51:18Last chance.
01:51:18Scoot back.
01:51:19Press that.
01:51:19Yeah.
01:51:20Or is that the same bloke?
01:51:20Yes, Jerry.
01:51:21Go.
01:51:22Okay,
01:51:22so maybe it's a bit of a stretch.
01:51:24He says some old English words.
01:51:28Okay.
01:51:28I don't care about the words.
01:51:29What I care is how they're said.
01:51:30Yeah.
01:51:31You know what I mean?
01:51:31It's not what you say.
01:51:32It's how you say it.
01:51:32It's got a bit of a Carolina brogue to it.
01:51:34Yeah.
01:51:35Well,
01:51:35look,
01:51:35me with my smoking pipe,
01:51:37I can.
01:51:41That might help.
01:51:43After all of the different communities
01:51:45that you've spent time with,
01:51:46Yeah.
01:51:46Like Navajo,
01:51:48Amish,
01:51:48you pick,
01:51:50which one could you see yourself
01:51:52most living with full-time,
01:51:54do you think?
01:51:55Man.
01:51:57You have to up six,
01:51:59and you have to spend the rest of your days
01:52:00somewhere with a community of people.
01:52:04Where would it be?
01:52:05I like being a free agent so much.
01:52:08You know what I mean?
01:52:08I respect and honor all these groups,
01:52:10and I can admire what they're doing,
01:52:12and the families that's been in a place
01:52:14for 10 generations.
01:52:15That's really cool.
01:52:17But I've always had friends from every background
01:52:19and never belonged to a specific group.
01:52:23And that scares me for some reason,
01:52:25like just being in that group dynamic.
01:52:27Do you feel displaced a lot of the time from that?
01:52:29No,
01:52:30it's almost like I belong everywhere
01:52:33and belong nowhere at the same time.
01:52:35Like I like learning
01:52:36and like getting into different groups,
01:52:38but to be Amish,
01:52:40maybe two years,
01:52:41but then after a year or two,
01:52:43you're like,
01:52:43do you think this would be harder?
01:52:45Obviously,
01:52:45you did this before you met your missus,
01:52:47but do you think this would be harder
01:52:48if you didn't have the unit,
01:52:51like the you and another person
01:52:53relationship unit thing?
01:52:56Because it feels to me like
01:52:57it could be quite destabilizing.
01:53:00You might feel a little uncertain and grounded.
01:53:03A hundred percent.
01:53:03So my wife edits.
01:53:05So this is our baby,
01:53:07this whole thing.
01:53:07Oh, cool.
01:53:08This channel.
01:53:08It's a family affair.
01:53:09Family affair.
01:53:10We got a mini dog.
01:53:11So that's like,
01:53:12that's the extent of it.
01:53:14So we-
01:53:16So it's you and a GoPro?
01:53:17It's me and a GoPro.
01:53:18I figure out the story.
01:53:19She edits.
01:53:20Wow.
01:53:22But we weren't-
01:53:22Commandeered some Ukrainian workforce.
01:53:27There are hardworking people.
01:53:30It wasn't my intention,
01:53:32but it turned out that way
01:53:33that we're just-
01:53:33Unreal.
01:53:34We're fully in it together.
01:53:35So we have that bond,
01:53:37but totally,
01:53:38if I had to hire an outside editor
01:53:40and it was just like
01:53:41sending files of video off
01:53:42and working that way,
01:53:43I think you're right.
01:53:44I think it would be-
01:53:45Destabilizing.
01:53:47Destabilizing.
01:53:48But I come,
01:53:48we're very tight.
01:53:50I mean,
01:53:50okay,
01:53:50the only two other people,
01:53:51we have a guy that does translations
01:53:53in Thailand,
01:53:53American guy.
01:53:54Mm-hmm.
01:53:55Ah,
01:53:55just to do the translations for videos
01:53:57in a virtual assistant in Thailand
01:53:59that,
01:54:00no,
01:54:01Philippines.
01:54:02Lean team.
01:54:02That takes my emails
01:54:03and puts them in monday.com
01:54:05for organization.
01:54:07That's it.
01:54:07Do you know Ryan Trahan?
01:54:09Do you know him?
01:54:10Yeah.
01:54:10Yeah.
01:54:10So Ryan got rid of everybody.
01:54:13No way.
01:54:13Just him and an iPhone.
01:54:14Are you serious?
01:54:15He doesn't,
01:54:15who edits?
01:54:16Him.
01:54:17You serious?
01:54:17Correct.
01:54:18The guy that's doing numbers
01:54:20not far off Mr. Beast.
01:54:22Wow.
01:54:22Is him and iPhone.
01:54:24His wife's there,
01:54:25but just,
01:54:26I think,
01:54:26largely hanging
01:54:27and just like kind of a moral support.
01:54:29Good for him.
01:54:29Him with an iPhone
01:54:31and yeah,
01:54:32he's just in.
01:54:33Because here's the deal
01:54:34with this works.
01:54:36I got the logistics of it.
01:54:37Got to get to the location.
01:54:38Got to figure out the story first.
01:54:40It's a day of shooting.
01:54:42You can either be
01:54:43more of a creator
01:54:45or more of a manager
01:54:46in the video space,
01:54:48I think.
01:54:49Correct.
01:54:49And I don't want to manage.
01:54:51Like it hurts
01:54:52the quality of the video.
01:54:54I remember I had someone
01:54:55working for me
01:54:55and she was great.
01:54:56She set up a lot of stuff
01:54:57in the channel,
01:54:58but there was drama
01:54:59before going out
01:55:00to a video
01:55:01and my password,
01:55:02Facebook password
01:55:03was given to a marketing company
01:55:04and I'm like,
01:55:05oh,
01:55:06like dealing with chaos
01:55:08and then we had to blow up.
01:55:09It wrecks the video.
01:55:10And then I wrecked the video
01:55:12because I went out there
01:55:12and I was late
01:55:13and everything got messed up.
01:55:14So I need to be
01:55:15in my own head
01:55:16and space
01:55:16a long time
01:55:17with no interruptions.
01:55:19There's an essay
01:55:19called
01:55:20Manager Mode
01:55:21vs. Maker Mode
01:55:22by Paul Graham
01:55:23who is the main guy
01:55:25at YC.
01:55:25Yep.
01:55:26And it is
01:55:27kind of a fundamental frame
01:55:30that everybody needs to know.
01:55:32You cannot be in Maker Mode
01:55:34if you're in Manager Mode.
01:55:36It's actually impossible.
01:55:38And basically,
01:55:40as soon as you get
01:55:41drawn into
01:55:43admin,
01:55:44executive function,
01:55:46planning,
01:55:47logistics,
01:55:48operations,
01:55:48as soon as you do that,
01:55:49no matter what it is,
01:55:50your capacity
01:55:51to get back
01:55:52into
01:55:53blue sky,
01:55:54sort of fluid thinking,
01:55:56just vibing with it,
01:55:57man,
01:55:58world
01:55:59is basically impossible.
01:56:00And this is the trajectory.
01:56:01I was literally talking
01:56:02to Ryan Long
01:56:02about this today.
01:56:05This is the trajectory
01:56:06where people get things wrong
01:56:07when they try
01:56:08to build a business.
01:56:09And it's a temptation.
01:56:10They get things wrong.
01:56:12It is a
01:56:13hurdle that you need to get.
01:56:15It is a series of hurdles,
01:56:16an endless series of hurdles
01:56:17you always need to get over.
01:56:18And it's at each one of them
01:56:20that you fall at,
01:56:21it slows things down
01:56:22and it worsens the quality
01:56:23of your output.
01:56:25100%.
01:56:25It's dangerous.
01:56:27And some people have the skills
01:56:28that they can flip
01:56:29between both quickly.
01:56:30I don't have that.
01:56:31I'm yet to meet anybody
01:56:32that is great
01:56:33at going from Manager Mode
01:56:35to Maker Mode.
01:56:35Within the same day,
01:56:36I think you can degrade
01:56:38from starting off
01:56:39making something
01:56:39and then there's a catastrophe
01:56:41and you fall into
01:56:42Logistics Mode.
01:56:43Yeah.
01:56:44I don't know a single person,
01:56:45I've never met a single person
01:56:46who can start a day off
01:56:48in Manager Mode
01:56:48and become Maker Mode
01:56:49after lunch.
01:56:51It straight up
01:56:52is a one-way street.
01:56:54And this is why
01:56:55if you're going to organize
01:56:56your, you know,
01:56:57if you're a burgeoning executive
01:56:58or, you know,
01:56:59an online PT or something
01:57:00and you have calls
01:57:02or you have to do
01:57:02client check-ins
01:57:03or whatever,
01:57:04just pick a day
01:57:05or a bunch of days
01:57:06and have those written off
01:57:07start to finish.
01:57:08All right,
01:57:09I just,
01:57:09I'm in pure Adderall
01:57:11and Newtonic energy
01:57:12like cranking out
01:57:14all of my productivity
01:57:15and then I leave myself
01:57:17time that's sacred
01:57:18or the alternative
01:57:19if you can't take
01:57:20entire days
01:57:21is to have your morning
01:57:22because you can go
01:57:23from maker to manager
01:57:24but you can't go
01:57:25from manager to maker.
01:57:26Yeah, that makes sense.
01:57:27That's the way to do it.
01:57:27Peter Santanello,
01:57:28ladies and gentlemen,
01:57:29dude,
01:57:29you absolutely fucking rule.
01:57:30Thank you.
01:57:31I think your content's amazing.
01:57:32I really applaud you
01:57:33for trying to bring
01:57:34lightness and,
01:57:35you know,
01:57:36levity to stories
01:57:37that people think
01:57:37is a little bit more dark.
01:57:39Where should people go
01:57:40to get everything?
01:57:42On everything,
01:57:43just Peter Santanello,
01:57:44tough name to spell,
01:57:45so Peter Sant
01:57:46and I'll usually come up.
01:57:48I got a website
01:57:49with everything,
01:57:49the book tour coming up.
01:57:50I don't know
01:57:51when you're posting this.
01:57:51It's got a book tour.
01:57:52I'm all over the country
01:57:53signing books.
01:57:54Unreal.
01:57:54Got the book dropping,
01:57:56got the videos on YouTube.
01:57:58So.
01:57:59You're the man.
01:58:00That's where it's at.
01:58:00I really appreciate you
01:58:02and what you do,
01:58:02so thanks for,
01:58:03thanks for the great conversation.
01:58:04It's a pleasure, man.
01:58:05Yeah.
01:58:05All right.
01:58:05Goodbye, my beauties.
01:58:06All right.
01:58:06See you next time.
01:58:07Dude.
01:58:07Yes.
01:58:08Thank you.
01:58:08Fuck you.
01:58:08Thank you very much
01:58:11for tuning in
01:58:12if you enjoyed that episode.
01:58:13Another one
01:58:14that I know you'll love.
01:58:16It's just here.
